Book excerpt: Depuis les années 1960, les benzodiazépines sont des molécules médicamenteuses largement utilisées dans les pays industrialisés, en particulier en France. Elles sont principalement prescrites par les médecins généralistes dans le traitement des troubles anxieux et de l'insomnie. Si leur efficacité à court terme est largement reconnue, leur utilisation sur le long terme est plus discutable. En effet, au fil des années leur consommation est devenue problématique de par le manque de pertinence clinique de certaines prescriptions et le phénomène de dépendance qu'elles peuvent impliquer. Cela a mené à une surconsommation de ces molécules dont les enjeux pour la santé publique sont considérables. Ce travail propose donc de faire un état des lieux de la consommation des benzodiazépines en France et de ses enjeux, puis de mettre en évidence les déterminants de leur prescription en médecine générale, afin de dégager des perspectives d'amélioration de cette prescription et de lutte contre la dépendance.
