Book A Story of the Soul s Journey in the Nag Hammadi Library

Download or read book A Story of the Soul s Journey in the Nag Hammadi Library written by Ulla Tervahauta and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authentikos Logos (NHC VI,3), also known as Authoritative Teaching,is a little studied story of a soul's descent and ascent in the Nag Hammadi library. With her book Ulla Tervahauta fills a gap in the scholarship and provide the first monograph-length study that has this writingas its primary focus. The aim is to find a place and context for Authentikos Logos within early Christianity, but Tervahauta also adds new insight into the scholarship of the Nag Hammadi Library and study of early Christianity. Contrary to the usual discussion of the Nag Hammadi writings from the viewpoint of Gnostic studies, she argues that Authentikos Logos is best approached from the context of Christian traditions of late ancient Egypt between the third and the fifth centuries.Tervahauta discusses the story of the soul's journey in light of various Christian and Platonic writings. Also, she analyses the relationship of Authentikos Logos with the Valentinian Wisdom myth and suggests that no firm evidence connects the writing closely with Valentinian traditions. And although a Platonic mind-set can be assumed, the writing combines motifs in a unique manner. For example, the four epithets used in the writing – the "invisible soul", the "pneumatic soul", the "material soul", and the "rational soul" – are not found thus combined elsewhere. Discussion of matter (hyle) is connected with Christian scriptural allusions and the focus is on ethics and the evilness of matter. The body, on the other hand, is the soul's place of contest and progress. The Pauline term "pneumatic body" (1 Cor 15:44) is used allusively and from a Platonic perspective. With this book Ulla Tervahauta makes an important contribution to the study of early Christianity in late ancient Egypt by discussing a writing thatshows knowledge and creative combination of literary traditions that circulated in late ancient Egypt.

Download or read book Nurture for the Nurturer written by Larita Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurture for the Nurturer, is a supplemental guide that seeks to provide motivational fuel for the emotionally and physically spent mother during the initial days of breastfeeding and beyond. Each day's entry is likened to a well-balanced meal for the mother's soul and therefore is divided into the sections of a full course meal: appetizer, entrée, refreshment, and sometimes dessert. The appetizer consists of emotionally stimulating anecdotes that serve to wet the mother's palate for the heartier entrée composed of technical facts and evidence-based research about breastfeeding. The entrée is followed by refreshment in the form of spiritual meditations that compare the mechanics of breastfeeding to practical skills for soul care. Acknowledging the time-crunched reality of the mother of a newborn who may be balancing competing responsibilities or who is unacquainted with the level of priority that she must give to breastfeeding during the early phase, the daily entry can be "consumed" in 15 minutes leaving as much time for reflection as the mother desires. Why 12 days? Considering only 23% of working mothers in the USA have access to paid maternity leave and a startling 16% of working mothers return to work 10 days after having their baby, the 12 days' worth of material addresses the most common challenges faced by mothers during breastfeeding to ensure they get a good start. Emphasis is placed on women from marginalized communities, which includes minority women in the USA and women living in non-traditional settings like prisons or detention centers, who may need additional emotional and/or environmental support to overcome barriers to breastfeeding. Nurture for the Nurturer references policy statements and laws, and lists breastfeeding advocacy and support organizations devoted to supporting women's ability to breastfeed or pump their breastmilk in public and private settings.

Book HIV and Breastfeeding

Download or read book HIV and Breastfeeding written by Pamela Morrison and published by Pinter & Martin. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s it was discovered that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, could be passed through a mother's milk to her baby. Almost overnight in the industrialised countries, and later in the African countries most ravaged by HIV, breastfeeding became an endangered practice. But in the rush to reduce transmission of HIV, everything we already knew about breastfeeding's life-saving effects was overlooked, with devastating consequences for mothers and babies. In HIV and Breastfeeding: the untold story, former IBCLC Pamela Morrison, an acknowledged authority on HIV and breastfeeding, reveals how women in the world's most poverty-stricken areas were persuaded to abandon breastfeeding as part of a short-sighted and deadly policy that led to an humanitarian disaster. The dilemma that breastfeeding, an act of nurturing which confers food, comfort and love, could be at once life-saving yet lethal, has been called 'the ultimate paradox'. This critical account reveals how vital breastfeeding is, even in the most difficult of circumstances, and examines the lessons that can be learned from the mistakes of the past - which is particularly relevant as we deal with the consequences for mothers and babies of another global pandemic, Covid-19. With detailed information for HIV-positive mothers and their caregivers, and success stories from mothers themselves, this book is essential reading for anyone involved in protecting and supporting breastfeeding, or with a need for evidence-based information about breastfeeding and HIV.
