Book Market Power in the German Dairy Supply Chain

Download or read book Market Power in the German Dairy Supply Chain written by Aaron Grau and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German dairy supply chain is one of the most important agrifood supply chains in Germany. In 2015, raw milk production accounted for 19.2% of the total domestic agricultural production value and dairy products summed up 8.0% of total German agrifood exports. Nevertheless, the economic success of the supply chain is overshadowed by reports on market power abused by dairies and retailers. Fueled by complaints of dairy farmers and dairies on non-competitive behavior of downstream supply chain agents, the German anti-trust agency conducted a sector analysis between 2008 and 2012. In its final report the anti-trust agency acknowledged the threat of oligopsony power at both markets, raw milk and dairy output market, but could not find any evidence. Thus, the main premise of the presented work is to empirically investigate the German dairy supply chain for the existence of oligopsony power at the raw milk and dairy product market. Three approaches, structure-conduct-performance paradigm (SCPP), new empirical industrial organization (NEIO), and asymmetric price transmission (APT), are revised and their suitability for the empirical application discussed. The theory review shows that none of the discussed approaches provide a model that fits the structure of the German dairy supply chain of oligopsonistic threat on two vertically integrated markets. Additional characteristics of the theoretical frameworks limit their suitability for the study further. Either the data requirements are high and the models highly complex, like in the case of NEIO, but an index of market power can be measured, or the data requirements are rather low and the theoretic models rather simple, like in the case of APT, but market power or its extent are not clearly identified. Consequently, a modification of one of the approaches is not sufficient and a new theoretical model merging aspects of NEIO and APT had to be developed. [...].

Book Analysis of food demand and supply across the rural urban continuum for selected countries in Africa

Download or read book Analysis of food demand and supply across the rural urban continuum for selected countries in Africa written by Dolislager, M.J. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This background paper to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023 analyses a key element of agrifood systems transformation: the change of patterns in food supply and demand. Several studies have discussed this topic, but the current one takes an innovative perspective of analysis, considering these changes with a spatial perspective using the urban rural catchment areas (URCA) approach to analyse changes in food expenditure across the rural–urban continuum, using Living Standards Measurement Studies (LSMS) of 11 African countries. The analysis is preceded by a literature review of agrifood value chains transformation stages, drivers and current situation, focused in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and is followed by a macro review of food supply around the world and a “macro-meso” review of the supply of wheat and rice in two African countries. The conclusions shows that most food is purchased in all households across the rural–urban continuum, even in rural areas, breaking with the “myth” of rural subsistence farming in Africa. In addition, the results show a diffusion of the consumption of processed foods, including in a lesser extent highly processed foods, all across the rural–urban continuum, and not only in rural areas. From a food supply perspective, the low global availability of foods that are part of a healthy diet, as fruits, vegetables and legumes, nuts and seeds calls for increasing efforts for producing more nutritious foods in all countries of the world.

Book Camel and Cow Milk Marketing Chain Analysis The Case of Ethiopia

Download or read book Camel and Cow Milk Marketing Chain Analysis The Case of Ethiopia written by Bedilu Demissie and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk has a very wide importance both as a source of food and source of income in pastoral and agro-pastoral areas. On the contrary, the level of milk production is very low because of low production from endogenous milk cow and camel. Even at the present level of milk production, the product suffered lack of market and low price. Measures to solve the problem were limited partly for reasons of little research done and lack of attention given to the livestock subsector by policy makers. Hence, this study was initiated to partially fill this gap. The study used Heckman selection and Multiple linear regression models to indentify factors affecting Cow and Camel milk marketed surplus, respectively. The Policy relevant variables identified for both milk are number of milk cows and camels, access to market information, income from non-dairy sources and market price of cow and camel milk. The S-C-P model identified that the markets for camel and cow milk in the study area were non-competitive type. Generally, camel and cow milk market in the study area seemed to be inefficient and underdeveloped.

Book Supply Chain Strategies

Download or read book Supply Chain Strategies written by Tony Hines and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-19 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supply Chain Strategies demonstrates how organizations must take strategic decisions in order to manage their supply chains to sustain competitiveness in the global economy. Whereas many textbooks on supply chain management focus on purchasing and operations, this new edition of Tony Hines’ text focuses upon the direction-setting and efficient resource-allocation that organizations need to provide in order to satisfy their customers. Overcoming tensions between political, economic, technological, ethical and environmental considerations is shown to be vital to develop effective strategies for managing the supply chain. The third edition of Tony Hines’ successful textbook integrates thoroughly updated international cases to demonstrate how strategic thinking and SCM play out in the real world, and contains a host of useful pedagogy to reinforce learning, including learning outcomes for each chapter, discussion questions and a handy glossary. New to this edition are chapters discussing supply chain risk, procurement strategies and supply chain futures. This book is ideal for courses on supply chain management – especially those that require a strategic element.

This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the current Second Growth and Transformation Plan (2015-2020), the Government of Ethiopia expects the agro-industrial sector to play key role in economic growth of the Country. Accordingly, the creation of Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks has been identified as one of the key mechanisms for accelerating the development of the sector and the structural transformation of agriculture. Agro-industrial parks will play a significant role in transitioning Ethiopia from an agricultural-led into an industrial-led economy. In view of that, the development of Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks has been prioritized in Ethiopia’s national development strategy and four Agro-Industrial Growth Corridors have been selected for piloting the establishment of four Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks. The initiative aims at driving the structural transformation of the Ethiopian economy while reducing rural poverty and creating a better environment for increased investments in agro-processing and allied sectors. Since 1981, FAO has been a strong partner of the Government of Ethiopia towards the achievement of national food security and economic growth goals. FAO is working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to empower value chain actors and to promote inclusive, efficient and sustainable agricultural value chains. The present document is the first one of a series of detailed analyses of prioritized commodities, which will lead to inclusive, sustainable and stronger agricultural value chains in the Agro-Commodities Procurement Zone of the pilot Integrated Agro-Industrial Park in Central-Eastern Oromia.
