Download or read book Supplementary Studies on the Sensitivity of Optimized Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports of three related studies germane to structural optimization are provided. The first describes virtual memory simulator suitable for management of large quantities of numerical data such as required for sparse matrix manipulation. The second report describes two sparse matrix processors suitable for the large equation systems arising in structural analysis and provides comparative results. The last report describes a study of two optimization algorithms in the context of structural optimization. A number of test results for parameter studies and a general comparison of the two algorithms are given.

Book Imperfection Sensitivity of Optimized Structures

Download or read book Imperfection Sensitivity of Optimized Structures written by Bo O. Almroth and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a tendency of the critical load to become unstable if the lowest buckling modes are simultaneous or nearly so. This tends to be the case if structural panels are optimized with bifurcation buckling constraints. A complete software package, POIS (Panel Optimization with Integrated Software), was developed to solve this problem. POIS is described in a separate report with a summary presented here. The pre-buckling nonlinear behavior due to geometric imperfections is taken into account. The procedure allows optimization with the collapse load as constraint for panels that buckle locally well below the ultimate load. The computer programs are verified by application in some practical cases involving metal and composite material panels. It is concluded that the most weight - efficient design is one in which local buckling is permitted. A supplementary experimental program should be executed before POIS can be qualified as a reliable instrument for panel design. (Author).

Book Numerical Procedures for Analysis of Structural Shells

Download or read book Numerical Procedures for Analysis of Structural Shells written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation is undertaken of currently used discretization procedures in numerical analysis of structures. Emphasis is on the nonlinear behavior of thin shells and plates. It is found that the computer economy is extremely sensitive to the choice of element configuration. A proper balance between the order of the approximations of inplane and lateral displacements is important. The best finite element procedures are superior to finite differences for bifurcation buckling and for moderate nonlinearity. However, for shell collapse analysis the finite differences approach is quite superior to the finite elements. Suggestions are made for improvement of finite element technology for structures undergoing large rotations.

Book Optimization of Large Structural Systems

Download or read book Optimization of Large Structural Systems written by George I. N. Rozvany and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 1201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.I.N. Rozvany ASI Director, Professor of Structural Design, FB 10, Essen University, Essen, Germany Structural optimization deals with the optimal design of all systems that consist, at least partially, of solids and are subject to stresses and deformations. This inte grated discipline plays an increasingly important role in all branches of technology, including aerospace, structural, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering as well as energy generation and building technology. In fact, the design of most man made objects, ranging from space-ships and long-span bridges to tennis rackets and artificial organs, can be improved considerably if human intuition is enhanced by means of computer-aided, systematic decisions. In analysing highly complex structural systems in practice, discretization is un avoidable because closed-form analytical solutions are only available for relatively simple, idealized problems. To keep discretization errors to a minimum, it is de sirable to use a relatively large number of elements. Modern computer technology enables us to analyse systems with many thousand degrees of freedom. In the optimization of structural systems, however, most currently available methods are restricted to at most a few hundred variables or a few hundred active constraints.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shell-type structures can be found almost everywhere. They appear in natural forms but also as man-made, load-bearing components in diverse engineering systems. Mankind has struggled to replicate nature’s optimization of such structures but using modern computational tools it is now possible to analyse, design and optimise them systematically. Analysis and Optimization of Prismatic and Axisymmetric Shell Structures features: comprehensive coverage of the background theory of shell structures; development and implementation of reliable, creative and efficient computational tools for static and free-vibration analysis and structural optimization of variable-thickness shells and folded-plate structures; integrated computer-aided curve and surface modelling tools and automatic mesh generation, structural analysis sensitivity analysis and mathematical programming methods; well-documented, downloadable Fortran software for these techniques using finite element and finite strip simulations which can be readily adapted by the reader for the solution of practical problems or for use within a teaching or research environment. Written by leading experts in finite element and finite strip methods, Analysis and Optimization of Prismatic and Axisymmetric Shell Structures will be of great interest to researchers in structural mechanics and in automotive, aerospace and civil engineering as well as to designers from all fields using shell structures for their strength-per-unit-mass advantages.

Book Optimization and Anti optimization of Structures Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Optimization and Anti optimization of Structures Under Uncertainty written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents a collaboration between internationally recognized experts on anti-optimization and structural optimization, and summarizes various novel ideas, methodologies and results studied over 20 years. The book vividly demonstrates how the concept of uncertainty should be incorporated in a rigorous manner during the process of designing real-world structures. The necessity of anti-optimization approach is first demonstrated, then the anti-optimization techniques are applied to static, dynamic and buckling problems, thus covering the broadest possible set of applications. Finally, anti-optimization is fully utilized by a combination of structural optimization to produce the optimal design considering the worst-case scenario. This is currently the only book that covers the combination of optimization and anti-optimization. It shows how various optimization techniques are used in the novel anti-optimization technique, and how the structural optimization can be exponentially enhanced by incorporating the concept of worst-case scenario, thereby increasing the safety of the structures designed in various fields of engineering.
