Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Poems Who is there in the world that is not interested in children, and especially in little girls? I always think that there is something wrong with a person if he does not love little girls. My thoughts and words now, however, are about a little girl named Nellie Smith, whom four years since I met in Winter ville, Ga., who is now twelve years old, and yet old enough to write a beautiful story, in which one char acter is represented as a noble, generous rich man. The story is moral and helpful. Surely the author of said story is a beautiful little character, and not only is a good writer of prose but also poetry, and I commend her and her writings to all. Book Trees in Prose and Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Trees in Prose and Poetry Classic Reprint written by Gertrude Lincoln Stone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees in Prose and Poetry Trees, in their literary aspect, have as yet found small place in the nature books of to - day; but with the increasing amount of tree study in our common schools there is need of a collection of tree stories and poems. In the compilation of this little book the aim has been to present in the form of a supplementary reader for advanced grades the best litera ture, legendary, historical, and fanciful, that has been inspired by our common trees. Such a book may well have a place in every schoolroom. Where nature study is taught, the selections may be used as supplementary material; where nature study is as yet unattempted, an intelligent study of the selections must inspire the children with a love for the trees and a desire to know them better. There is no result of nature study that does so much to transform well-known scenes as a knowledge of the trees; and an important aid to this larger vision is familiarity with the thoughts of the great writers on these most majestic specimens of the plant world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From a Boy's Fancy: A Volume of Stories and Poems I visited this individual, and my first impres sion on seeing him was that, whatever troubles he might have, his tailor and barber bills at least were not burdensome. I was struck by the lack of demarkation between the respective abodes of the solitary human inhabitant, and his feathered and quadrupedal domestics. They seemed all to live together in a great state of social conglomeration, - dogs, cats, and all other animals of a conven icht size, seeming to consider the inside of the house as much their side as the outside. Nor did these infringing inferiors seem to recognize the mental walls stretching from the chalk-marks to the ceiling. Doubtless, either the marks were too faint, or their imaginations were not vivid enough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Book of Verse from Langland to Kipling

Download or read book A Book of Verse from Langland to Kipling written by James Cruickshanks Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Verse From Langland to Kipling: Being a Supplement to the Golden Treasury The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes had some poetry of their own even before they quitted their homes in Low Germany. They had the Epic and the Lay, specimens of which survive in Beowulf and the F igbt at Finnsburgb. Left in heathendom they might have evolved a poetry of native myth and legend, like the Norse. But Christian missionaries from Rome soon brought them under the sway of an older civilization and a loftier religion; and thenceforth the anglo-saxon poets, though they could still sing at times of battle and adventure, devoted them selves in the main to humble paraphrase of the Bible story. All this, however, was in a tongue and idiom as strange to us as German, so that poetry written before the Conquest IS called anglo-saxon rather than English. Out of the welter that followed the Conquest a new nation emerged, with new habits of thought and speech, blended of anglo-saxon and N orman-f rench - in a word. A horse and-a large donkey were eating the grass which grew around them. A covered cart and van were standing, and a low tent with the covering nearly black with smoke, was fastened to the ground with long stakes. A. Large long dog lay curled up near the fire, and every now and then he lifted up his head as if in the act of listening. On the fire hung a large round pot; the way this was suspended was by a short chain fastened to two stakes, which were stuck in the ground.
