Book excerpt: This Supplement is intended to provide a diverse and extensive range of additional practice material for use in mastering the grammatical content of Introducing Biblical Hebrew by Allen P. Ross (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2001). It is based upon the writing system, vocabulary, morphology and syntax of Biblical Hebrew as these are presented in Introducing Biblical Hebrew, running parallel to the first 41 chapters of that volume. Chapters 1-6 deal progressively with the introductory issues of writing and pronouncing Hebrew, with practice based upon Genesis 1-2. Three types of exercise accompany the study of vocabulary, morphology and syntax: parsing of isolated forms, with emphasis upon the verb (chapters 10-41); two sections of sentences composed in Hebrew, the first focussed upon the material of the current chapter and the second containing longer sentences drawn from all the material encountered up to that point (chapters 3-41, with isolated phrases initially); and three sections of passages drawn directly from the Hebrew Bible (chapters 9-41) - isolated verses containing salient features of the grammar studied at that point, longer prose passages (Gen 1:1-2:4, 22:1-19, Deut 8-11, Ruth 1-4, Gen 37:12-36), and short poetic passages from the Psalms (Ps 1, 121, 133, 100, 103, 19, 113, 27, 91, 34, 8). Unfamiliar forms and syntax in the OT passages are footnoted, making it possible to read them without recourse to additional language tools. David M. It was written by a fellow student who found that gaining some very basic knowledge of the language, dramatically and positively changed his previously held views of the Old Testament. In addition, the author realized that the language was actually not so difficult to master, and that someone with an average intelligence (like himself), could with a bit of dedication and effort, actually master the bulk of the material. He started teaching his friends in South Africa (and later in China). They were ordinary folk, from all walks of life, who also for some time wanted to gain a basic insight into the original language of the Old Testament, but did not want to in any way become involved in formal academic studies. The author was delighted to find that the style and pace in which he presented the material, coupled with the their enthusiasm, resulted in these laymen and -women immediately making rapid and lasting progress. They agreed that the new insights gained - even from the first lesson - were fascinating, and they were excited by the prospect of learning more. He soon realized that the textbooks available at that time were not written with these type of students in mind, and he started making hand-outs suitable for his special target population. With the encouragement of his mentor from a few decades earlier - to whom this book is dedicated - and another genius in the field, he perfected the notes technically, and they became the genesis of what is now presented in this publication.

In Learning Biblical Hebrew, Bryan Rocine has written a first-year teaching grammar for Biblical Hebrew prose, taking the student from basic pronunciation forward. Students who have completed introductory courses in Biblical Hebrew often voice well-founded frustrations. They know some of the parts of the language, but they can-not read biblical text with any nuanced understanding. Rocine seeks to gain, for first-year students, the greatest possible advantage for their one-year's efforts. The course is comprised of fifty lessons and eight readings, which run concurrently with lessons 1-50. Each lesson is based on an actual biblical "verse" that illustrates the topic(s) for the lesson. The goals for each lesson are stated at the outset. Almost every lesson contains review material from the previous lesson before introducing the new material. Also for review, the student is given cross-referencing to previously learned material throughout the book. Every lesson has assignments of two types: (1) speed drills in which the student practices the lesson's materials as illustrated in examples containing minimal differences and (2) translation exercises taken from actual biblical texts.
