Download or read book Irrigation by Sprinkling Classic Reprint written by Jerald Emmet Christiansen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation by Sprinkling Sprinkling as a method of irrigation has been practiced in California and elsewhere for about forty years. Before 1920 it was limited primarily to truck cr0ps, nurseries, and small fruits, and was practiced mainly as supplemental irrigation in the more humid regions. Stationary overhead sprinkler systems were first used in citrus orchards in some sections of California about 1920. Most of such systems were installed, however, between 1924 and 1928 in areas where surface irrigation was not entirely satisfactory because of unusually pervious soil or because of topographic features. Along the foothills east of Pasadena, the soil is gravelly in many places and the slopes are rather steep for furrow irrigation, except where orchards are laid out on contour grades; overhead sprinkling of orchards had its inception in these areas. Book Irrigation Works

Download or read book Irrigation Works written by Arthur Powell Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation Works: Constructed by the United States Government As a modern activity of the Caucasian race, irrigation in the United States on any considerable scale seems to have had its beginning in Utah in the settlement of the Salt Lake Valley. The early settlements of California, New Mexico, and other arid States extended the practice of the early Spaniards and the Indians, and irrigation developed along with the slow settlement of these then remote regions. During the early history of irrigation farmers and groups of farmers naturally confined their efforts mainly to diverting small streams upon adjacent valleys where the slope of the country and the topography were such as to make the work easy and cheap. With the values of land then existing no expensive enter prise was practicable. Such development proceeding for nearly half a century, widely distributed over the arid region, irrigated in the aggregate a very large area of land. The farmers em ployed the cheapest class of construction and seldom counted their own time in computing costs, which are hence reported very low. Download or read book Water Supply for Irrigation Classic Reprint written by Frederick Haynes Newell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Supply for Irrigation The total area upon which crops were raised by irrigation was, accord in g to the results obtained by the Eleventh Census, acres, or square miles. This applies to the year ending May 31, 1890, the census being taken during the following June. Comparing this area with the total land surface west of the one hundredth meridian, it is found to be approximately only four-tenths of 1 per cent. In other words, for every acre from which crops were obtained by irrigation there were nearly 250 acres of land most of which was not utilized in any way except for pasturage. The area of the land surface of the United States west of the one hundredth meridian and between it and the Pacific ocean is square miles, not including thirty-six counties of western Oregon and Washington. Within this great extent of country are nearly all possi ble combinations of soil and climate, ranging from the smooth, almost barren, plains with scanty vegetation to the high rough mountains, the peaks covered throughout the year with snow and the s10pes clothed with thick forests. In a broad way four great classes of land may be distinguished, according to the amount of moisture received or the water supply available, as shown principally by the character of the vegetation. The following table gives approximately the amount of land embraced in each of these great classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation of Crops in the Southeastern United States: Principles and Practice For typical crop, soil, and climate situations, procedures are outlined for selecting irrigation equipment and for operating the equipment to provide the dependable soil-water control necessary for meeting a crop's water needs. The recommended procedures emphasize crop and soil characteristics and the maintenance of a critical soil volume at less than a specified soil-water suction. Equal emphasis is placed upon excessive water application and the leaching of nitrogen or other mobile nutrients out of the root zone. The option of supplying certain chemicals, particularly readily leached nutrients, through the irrigation system is discussed.
