Je ne me suis écarté de cette règle qu'une ou deux fois, notamment aux pages 40 - 3, où j'ai copié exprès presque toutes les épitaphes sur le patriarche Polyeucte, afin de mettre au grand jour la stérile abondance et le goût dépravé de cette malheureuse époque. Après cet exemple, le lecteur n'aura pas à regretter, j'es père, les misérables compositions où rien dans la forme ne rachète la platitude ou lineptie du fond, et que j'ai omises à dessein.
