Book High transonic speed Transport Aircraft Study

Download or read book High transonic speed Transport Aircraft Study written by Robert M. Kulfan and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An initial design study of high-transonic-speed transport aircraft has been completed. Five different design concepts were developed. These included fixed swept wing, variable-sweep wing, delta wing, double-fuselage yawed-wing, and single-fuselage yawed-wing aircraft. The boomless supersonic design objectives of range = 5560 km (3000 nmi), payload = 18,143 kg (40,000 lb), Mach = 1.2, and FAR Part 36 aircraft noise levels were achieved by the single-fuselage yawed-wing configuration with a gross weight of 211,828 kg (467,000 lb). A noise level of 15 EPNdB below FAR Part 36 requirements was obtained with a gross weight increase to 226,796 kg (500,000 lb). The off-design subsonic range capability for this configuration exceeded the Mach 1.2 design range by more than 20%. Although wing aeroelastic divergence was a primary design consideration for the yawed-wing concepts, the graphite-epoxy wings of this study were designed by critical gust and maneuver loads rather than by divergence requirements. The transonic nacelle drag is shown to be very sensitive to the nacelle installation. A six-degree-of-freedom dynamic stability analysis indicated that the control coordination and stability augmentation system would require more development than for a symmetrical airplane but is entirely feasible. A three-plane development plan is recommended to establish the full potential of the yawed-wing concept.

Book Numerical Aircraft Design Using 3 D Transonic Analysis with Optimization

Download or read book Numerical Aircraft Design Using 3 D Transonic Analysis with Optimization written by Andrew J. Srokowski and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This executive summary volume is divided into two parts: Part 1 highlights the transport development, and Part 2 highlights the fighter development. There are two other volumes which make up the final report. Volume 2 is the main volume in the final report. It presents in detail the information that has been highlighted here. Volume 2 is also divided into two parts with part 1 dealing with transport design and part 2 concerned with the fighter design. Volume 3 is a detailed user's guide to the computer programs produced under this contract. Volume 3 is similarly divided into two parts. A detailed summary of the work performed in the Advanced Transonic Technology (ATT) program to incorporate 3-D Transonic computational aerodynamics methods into aircraft design procedures is presented. Existing transonic analysis programs were modified for the design procedure and linked with a numerical optimization program to design wings that are in some sense optimized for a given set of design conditions. The design procedure was validated by applying it in two design case studies. The application of the design procedure in each of these case studies is described in detail. The configurations resulting from these studies were subjected to design verification wind tunnel testing. Comparisons of test data with computed results are presented.

Book A Supersonic Area Rule and an Application to the Design of a Wing body Combination with High Lift drag Ratios

Download or read book A Supersonic Area Rule and an Application to the Design of a Wing body Combination with High Lift drag Ratios written by Richard T. Whitcomb and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: As an extension of the transonic area rule, a concept for interrelating the wave drags of wing-body combinations at moderate supersonic speeds with axial developments of cross-sectional area has been derived. The wave drag of a combination at a given supersonic speed is related to a number of developments of cross-sectional areas as intersected by Mach planes. On the basis of this concept and other design procedures, a structurally feasible, swept-wing--indented-body combination has been designed to have relatively high maximum lift-drag ratios over a range of transonic and moderate supersonic Mach numbers. The wing of the combination has been designed to have reduced drag associated with lift and, when used with an indented body, to have low zero-lift wave drag. Experimental results have been obtained for this configuration at Mach numbers from 0.80 to 2.01. Maximum lift-drag ratios of approximately 14 and 9 were measured at Mach numbers of 1.15 and 1.41, respectively.
