Book The Supernatural Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Supernatural Classic Reprint written by Lyman Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supernatural The teacher in the medical school teaches physiology and anatomy and hygiene; but when we get sick and send for a doctor, we do not send in order that we may receive a lec ture on physiology or anatomy or hygiene. We send for the doctor that he may use his knowledge of physiology or anatomy or hy giene to make us well. You break a bone you do not want the doctor to tell you about bones, you want him to set the bone. So the object of ministers is not to lecture us on the philosophy of religion; neither is it to ignore the philosophy of religion; it is to use the philosophy of religion to help men and women to live better, nobler, diviner lives. The truth, says Christ, shall make you free. Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth. Truth is, then, an instrument. The object of truth is to set men free; it is to sanctify men, to make them holy. The minister who simply expounds the truth does not understand his mission. His mission is so to use truth that men shall be made free; that men shall be made holy. His ministry is, therefore, to be determined by fruits in the life. That is the best sermon, not which is a great pulpit effort, but which is helpful. If, young men, you have preached a sermon and some one comes up to you and says that was a great pulpit effort, hide your head in shame and go home and never write another like it. But if some one comes to you, with a little'quaver in the voice and a little moisture in the eye, and says, Thank you; you have helped me this morning, thank God and go home and try to write another like it. That is the end of preaching - to use theology to help life. The test of the sermon is its fruitfulness in life; and that is the test of theology. Book A Manual of Ascetical Theology

Download or read book A Manual of Ascetical Theology written by Arthur Devine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ascetical Theology: Or the Supernatural Life of the Soul on Earth and in Heaven Ascetical theology may be defined: A science which from truths divinely revealed explains the doctrine by which souls are directed in the acquisition and perfection of the supernatural life, according to the ordinary providence of God. It is a branch of moral theology, and must of necessity have the ordinary science of theology as its foundation. Although with mystical theology it forms a subdivision of moral theology, it is distinct from both of these sciences. While moral theology prescribes the rules of action, ascetical theology teaches the means by which sanctity of life may be acquired, increased, and perfected. On the other hand, mystical theology seems to indicate a higher and sublimer degree of asceticism. This science does not teach the ordinary and well-beaten paths of perfection, but shows a more excellent way and deals with a more hidden intercourse between man and God, always aspiring as it does to the higher and the better things, according to the words: Whither the impulse of the spirit was to go, thither they went, and they turned not when they went. Book The Supernatural Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Supernatural Vol 2 of 2 written by John H. King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supernatural, Vol. 2 of 2: Its Origin, Nature, and Evolution That the early inhabitants of Greece were originally only nature worshippers, paying Divine adoration to the sky, the sun, the moon, the stars, and the earth, was long since affirmed by Bos, and the same theory of god-power is also referred to in the fragments remaining of the Orphic Hymns. There, night, the sun, moon, water, fire, air, and earth, are all described as gods, but these were not the only supernal powers; they were associated with Zeus and Pluto, Bacchus and the sun were only cognomens for the one same sky force. As sun, we may probably read the first aboriginal spirit-power, Zeus and Pluto as affirmative of the same divinity were foreign names derived from the early Aryan conquerors or settlers, but Bacchus, as hero-god of human origin, implies an ancestral spirit. In Greece, as in Egypt and India, the many designations of Divine sun attributes and other nature powers, implies various different tribal origins, all afterwards combined in the same spirit being. These were not all of local origin; some were names introduced by emigrants, others were colonial god delineations; some were acquired by conquest, others cults of foreign introduction.
