Book excerpt: Innumerable books have been published on the two most famous fighter aircraft of all time, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Messerschmitt Bf109. But books setting out to tell the story of both aircraft are very much rarer - probably fewer than the fingers of one hand. Yet their joint story is one which bears retelling since both were essential to the air campaigns of World War Two.Incredibly, the men who designed them lacked any experience of designing a modern fighter. R J Mitchell had begun his career working on industrial steam locomotives, Willy Messerschmitt had cut his aeronautical teeth on light and fragile gliders and sporting planes. Yet both men not only managed to devise aircraft which could hold their own in a world where other designs went from state-of-the-art to obsolete in a staggeringly short time, but their fighters remained competitive over six years of front-line combat. Despite the different ways their creators approached their daunting tasks and the obstacles each faced in acceptance by the services for which they were designed, they proved to be so closely matched that neither side gained a decisive advantage in a titanic struggle. Had either of them not matched up to its opponent so well, then the air war would have been a one-sided catastrophe ending in a quick defeat for the Allies or the Axis powers, and the course of twentieth century history would have been changed beyond recognition.

Download or read book Spitfire MK 1 V written by Peter Caygill and published by Crowood Press UK. This book was released on 2005-04-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the furious skies of the Battle of Britain, one aircraft captured the imagination of the British people - it was the Supermarine Spitfire. This diminutive and elegant fighter represented the last hope against invasion by Hitler's unstoppable Blitzkrieg. Reginald Mitchell's innovative design was born of racing seaplanes built to win the Schneider Trophy - the most famous air races of the Twenties and Thirties. The Mk I first flew in 1936 and the type entered RAF service in 1938. Wartime development was rapid. Part of the success story was the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. As this improved, so did the Spit. The Mk V was built in greater numbers than any other model and provided Fighter Command's backbone during 1941-42. This is the perfect introductory book for the general reader, enthusiast and modeler alike wishing to find a succinct yet detailed introduction to the design and history of the Spitfire. Why was the aircraft conceived? What was it like to fly on a mission? Who were the people who designed it and became famous for flying it? What were its virtues and vices? These and many more questions are answered here, plus a host of illustrations that show variations of color schemes used in different operational theatres and rare photographs taken when the heat was on.

Book Supermarine Spitfire V Polish Squadrons Over Dieppe

Download or read book Supermarine Spitfire V Polish Squadrons Over Dieppe written by Wojtek Matusiak and published by Polish Wings. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Allied landing at Dieppe, France, on 19 August 1942. That was one of the most controversial battles of the Second World War, which also involved extensive air operations to provide direct support for the amphibious assault and to defend the troops and the fleet against the Luftwaffe. This book is a tribute to the 1st Polish Wing, Fighter Command's most successful wing during the operation. The wing provided 10% of the Spitfire squadrons engaged in the battle, suffered 3.5% of losses and was credited by Fighter Command with 17% of all enemy aircraft destroyed. Nos. 303 and 317 Polish Squadrons were the top-scoring units that day. Notably, they achieved this while still flying the Spitfire V variant, while some Fighter Command squadrons already had the much improved Mk IX.Several hundred of carefully selected and extensively captioned images depict Spitfires of the five Polish squadrons, as well as the men who maintained and flew them in support of the Dieppe landings.
