Book Superintendent principal Perception of Effective Leadership Behaviors practices in Small Rural School Districts in Wisconsin

Download or read book Superintendent principal Perception of Effective Leadership Behaviors practices in Small Rural School Districts in Wisconsin written by John C. Lehnen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People who serve in the dual role of superintendent and principal are very unique, typically serving as the lone leader in the smallest of rural school districts. Research on rural school district leadership tends to be lacking when compared to suburban or urban school leadership. The literature review highlights the demands and challenges of rural school district leadership in history to the most recent studies done on superintendents, principals and superintendent/principals. Although superintendent/principals may be small in number, they are no less important than large district superintendents. The purpose of this study was to provide an analysis of the perceptions of superintendent/principals on how they fulfill their dual role responsibilities with effective leadership behaviors/practices as one administrator in a small rural school district in the state of Wisconsin. The theoretical framework details the behaviors/practices that fulfill the areas of responsibility of superintendents and principals from two separate meta-analysis research studies. Additionally, the framework included support for the meta-analysis research on superintendent leadership responsibilities and practices from another major study done in a rural context. The researcher employed descriptive quantitative research methods using survey research aligned to the theoretical framework. Forty-nine superintendent/principals out of 53 possible participants in the state of Wisconsin answered a 115 item survey on behaviors/practices that reflected their actual behaviors/practices in their school district. Overall, the findings show, despite the numerous challenges of small rural district leadership, superintendent/principals perceived themselves positively, more completely meeting their superintendent and principal responsibilities with effective behaviors/practices than not. The researcher also analyzed the data for significant differences in superintendent/principal’s scores on behaviors/practices to compare/contrast with the research presented in the review of literature or theoretical framework. The most interesting conclusion was the importance of “Defined Autonomy” and what it means to a superintendent/principal for overall success in leading a small rural school district. This research study provided several implications for the future. Despite the challenges of the dual role, superintendent/principals must stay focused on effective behaviors/practices that meet their responsibilities, connect to their communities and parents, and develop trusting relationships with all constituents.

Book excerpt: District educational leaders throughout the nation are answering the call to action to provide both equitable and excellent schools for all learners, particularly for students who have been traditionally marginalized. Yet ironically, we know little about how district leaders are responding to this call as the voices of superintendents are scarcely heard in the literature. This study is intended to deepen understanding of the superintendent's role in providing district-level leadership that builds the capacity of school principals to lead equitable and excellent schools where deliberate steps have been taken to close the achievement gap. More specifically, this study addressed the following question: In a high achieving school district, what leadership practices of the superintendent cultivate building principal capacity --- both individually and collectively --- to significantly contribute to raising the achievement level of typically marginalized students across the school district? Further, this study explored the superintendent's role in creating an integrated, high achieving district that is responsive to the needs of traditionally marginalized students. A qualitative case study of a superintendent was conducted in one school district which has recently had a three-year period in which schools across the district closed the achievement gap. Qualitative methods including interviews, observations, and document reviews were used to collect the research data.

Book Principal Concerns in Wisconsin

Download or read book Principal Concerns in Wisconsin written by Katherine Martin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common sense and recent research make it clear that schools cannot be successful without strong principals. Strong principals help improve student performance in many ways, from shaping a school's mission and culture to hiring, developing, and retaining its teachers. Even so, principals often get short shrift in today's debates about human capital in public education. Compared to the large body of research and policy attention given to teachers, the field knows surprisingly little about the principal workforce. This knowledge gap means that it often is hard for school districts and states to make strategic decisions to improve their principal workforces. Where do most principals come from? How long do they stay? How well do they perform? How many will need to be hired and developed in the future? Few districts or states know the answers. To address these and other important questions about their principals, states need, among other things, to build detailed longitudinal data systems like the ones they use to track teachers and students. But in some places those types of systems are still a long way off. In the meantime, system leaders can examine the administrative data they already have to paint a basic picture of their principal workforce, one that can help prompt deeper questions and discussions about the challenges and opportunities they face. This "Principal Concerns" brief offers an example of this type of analysis for Wisconsin. Why should Wisconsin be concerned about its principal workforce? After all, by some measures, the state's schools are doing well. Wisconsin's NAEP scores, for example, are consistently higher than the national average. Yet there is still much work to be done to ensure that all students achieve at high levels, and strong leadership is key to that success. Under the state's recently revamped accountability system, 266 schools across the state are not meeting performance expectations. In Milwaukee Public Schools, the state's largest school system, only 21 percent of schools met or exceeded the state's expectations. (Contains 3 figures and 11 footnotes.).

Book Superintendent Perceptions of Effective School Leadership and Its Impact on School Culture at the High School Level

Download or read book Superintendent Perceptions of Effective School Leadership and Its Impact on School Culture at the High School Level written by Brandon S. Pardoe and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study investigated superintendent perceptions of effective principal leadership and its impact on school culture in high schools. The three research questions examined superintendents' perceptions on the components of a healthy high school culture, and the qualities that effective principals employ to directly impact the culture of their high schools in their school districts. Thirty-nine superintendents from across central and northeastern Pennsylvania participated in this study and completed the researcher developed online survey. Of those, five participated in a telephone interview with the researcher. The findings from the research revealed that superintendents perceive that effective principal leadership does influence the culture of high schools. The results from the study implicated identifiable qualities and strategies of principals that superintendents expect to enhance the school culture of high schools located in their school districts. These qualities and strategies include principal risk taking, continuous professional development, and the ability to communicate a clear vision and mission of the school. These findings may provide valuable information to superintendents and other school administrators to help inform decisions on how to effectively improve the culture of their high schools and improve student learning in their own school systems.

Book Practices that Constitute Successful School Superintendent Leadership Perceptions from Established Rural School Superintendents

Download or read book Practices that Constitute Successful School Superintendent Leadership Perceptions from Established Rural School Superintendents written by David Brian Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine which leadership practices are the most crucial in helping school superintendents be successful as school leaders. This is a qualitative study in which six rural Missouri superintendents were interviewed to determine the answers to the following research questions: (a) What leadership practices are perceived by established school superintendents to be crucial to successful school leadership? and (b) What do established superintendents perceive are the leadership practices that warrant the most attention from the school superintendent? A review of the literature identified nine commonly used research practices: vision, communication, visibility, inspiring followers, shared leadership and collaboration, professional growth, ethical behavior, political awareness, and building relationships. The qualitative interviews focused on the impressions, the perceptions, and the experiences of the superintendents as answers were sought concerning which leadership practices were considered the most crucial. Once the interviews were completed and the data were analyzed, the findings provided evidence to support recommendations for superintendents concerning communication, having an ethical focus, being effective managers, and utilizing combinations of leadership practices.

Book Superintendents Leadership Behaviors for DIBELS Implementation A Comparative Case Study of Principals and Superintendents Perceptions

Download or read book Superintendents Leadership Behaviors for DIBELS Implementation A Comparative Case Study of Principals and Superintendents Perceptions written by Stephen Joseph Poling and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current school reforms under No Child Left Behind (NCLB, 2001) call for effective leadership from federal and state levels and across the school district from the superintendent to the school level to improve student learning. Part of the complexity of NCLB is greater superintendent accountability for increased student learning, which necessitates new conceptions of superintendent leadership behaviors. An unexplored area of educational research involves elementary principals' and superintendents' perceptions of superintendents' leadership behaviors and perceptions of superintendents' leadership behaviors for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) implementation. Additionally, an unexplored area of educational research is the comparison of elementary principals' perceptions of superintendent leadership behaviors with superintendents' self-reported leadership behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine principals' and superintendents' perceptions of superintendents' leadership behaviors for DIBELS implementation. This mixed methods comparative case study used Q-methodology, and principals' and superintendents' interviews. Field observations and document analysis enriched the descriptions and understandings of superintendent leadership in this study. Findings indicated superintendents set defensible directions and influenced principals to implement DIBELS. Superintendents provided a leadership support network for principals comprised of mid-level district administrators. The relationships in this network, coupled with supports and resources in the network, gave principals access to social capital for DIBELS implementation.

Book Selected Factors Associated with Administrators Leadership Behaviors and School Accountability

Download or read book Selected Factors Associated with Administrators Leadership Behaviors and School Accountability written by Mary Nell VanDevender Woolery and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this era of educational accountability, achieving and maintaining high levels of student academic performance is the goal of every school. State accountability models serve as the measure to determine if school districts are successfully educating students, and the responsibility of student academic success rests on the principal of each school. Effective leadership is a necessary component of successful schools, especially in rural school districts. The focus of this research was to explore teachers' perceptions of the leadership behaviors and practices of their principals and determine if relationships existed between the leadership behaviors and the schools' accountability ratings. A survey research design was utilized in this study of eight schools across three rural school districts in central Mississippi. The researcher utilized The Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale to survey 121 teacher participants regarding their perceptions of principals' leadership behaviors or practices. The study revealed no statistically significant relationships existed between principals' leadership behaviors and school accountability ratings. However, the findings support existing literature on the indirect influence of principal leadership on student achievement.
