Book Superconducting Accelerator Magnets

Download or read book Superconducting Accelerator Magnets written by Karl-hubert Mess and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main topic of the book are the superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets needed in high-energy accelerators and storage rings for protons, antiprotons or heavy ions. The basic principles of low-temperature superconductivity are outlined with special emphasis on the effects which are relevant for accelerator magnets. Properties and fabrication methods of practical superconductors are described. Analytical methods for field calculation and multipole expansion are presented for coils without and with iron yoke. The effect of yoke saturation and geometric distortions on field quality is studied. Persistent magnetization currents in the superconductor and eddy currents the copper part of the cable are analyzed in detail and their influence on field quality and magnet performance is investigated. Superconductor stability, quench origins and propagation and magnet protection are addressed. Some important concepts of accelerator physics are introduced which are needed to appreciate the demanding requirements on field quality in large storage rings. The operational experience with the superconducting HERA collider serves as an illustration. Finally superconducting correction coils and practical construction and fabrication methods of accelerator magnets are discussed. The physical and technical principles described in the book are substantiated with a wealth of experimental data on multipoles, persistent- and eddy-current effects, quench performance and much more.

Book Handbook of Applied Superconductivity Volume 2

Download or read book Handbook of Applied Superconductivity Volume 2 written by B Seeber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Two-Volume Set covers all important aspects of applied superconductivity and the supporting low-temperature technologies. The handbook clearly demonstrates the capabilities of superconducting technologies and illustrates how to implement these technologies in new areas of academic and industrial research and development. Volume One provides an introduction to the theoretical background of both low and high Tc superconductivity, followed by details of the basic hardware such as wires, tapes, and cables used in applications of superconductivity and the necessary supporting science and technology. Theoretical discussions are in most cases followed by examples of real designs, fabrication techniques, and practical instrumentation guidance. A final chapter examines materials properties at low temperatures. Volume Two provides examples of current and future applications of superconductivity. It covers medical systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high field magnets for research, superconducting magnets for accelerators, industrial systems for magnetic separation, and transportation systems. The final chapters look to future applications in power and superconducting electronics. With fully referenced, peer-refereed contributions from experts in various fields, this two-volume work is an essential reference for a wide range of scientists and engineers in academic and industrial research and development environments.

Book Design of Superconducting Magnet Systems

Download or read book Design of Superconducting Magnet Systems written by Z. J. J. Stekly and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains an engineering-physics design study of magnets in various configurations. The types of magnets that have been considered are solenoids, two-dimensional dipole coils such as might be used for establishing MHD fields, and quadrupole magnets such as might be used for Joffe bars. Also, systems including combinations of these magnets have been calculated. The type of coil materials that have been evaluated include: room temperature copper magnets with appropriate cooling, cryogenic materials operating over a variety of cryogenic temperatures, and superconducting materials. In the case of superconductors, data is given for both stabilized and unstabilized materials. The theory of stabilization is presented in some detail. Coils are considered having several current grades and the effect of grading on reduction in coil weight and cost is given. Data is presented for dimensions, weight, cost, and refrigeration requirements, for each of these types over a range of central magnetic fields from 0 to 10 Wb/m square. Optimization procedures are covered showing how the best conductor would be selected for minimum weight, or minimum cost. Large coils generate large electromagnetic forces. A considerable section is devoted to calculation of these forces, both within the coil and on external structural elements. Estimates of the weight of structure are given in terms of the coil dimensions, maximum field and stored energy. Finally, several examples of the use of the design charts and formulas are presented to familiarize the designer with the material contained in this report. (Author).

Book Superconducting Machines and Devices

Download or read book Superconducting Machines and Devices written by S. Foner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents detailed discussions of several of the large scale applications of superconductivity which will have major economic impact on technical developments in the industrial world. The world wide concern with energy problems makes this work particularly timely. Some of the large scale devices and systems such as superconducting generators, motors, power transmission, large magnets, high speed ground transportation and industrial processing clearly speak directly to improved efficiencies of generation and utilization of energy. The articles treat each subject in depth. The text is suitable for advanced undergradu ate or graduate engineering or applied science courses. The text should also be of immediate use to practicing engineers and scientists in applied superconductivity. The unique summaries of national efforts in applied superconductivity will also be valuable to industrial and government plan ners. The book is based on a NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled, "Large Scale Applications of Superconductivity and Magnetism" which was held September 5 to 14 in the Hotel des Alpes, Entreves, Valle d'Aosta, Northern Italy. This Study Institute represented a departure from other NA TO Advanced Study Institutes in that it was very strongly directed toward engineering applications rather than purely scientifically oriented interests. The planning of this Institute developed over several years and would not have been possible without continued interest by several key NATO Scientific Mfairs Division scientists. It started when one of us (S. F. ) met with Dr. H.
