Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genoa completed its transformation from a faded maritime power into a thriving banking center for Europe in the seventeenth century. The wealth accumulated by its leading families spurred investment in the visual arts on an enormous scale. This volume explores how artists both foreign and native created a singularly rich and extravagant expression of the baroque in works of extraordinary variety, sumptuousness, and exuberance. This art, however, has remained largely hidden behind the facades of the city's palaces, with few works, apart from those by the school's great expatriates, found beyond its borders. As a result, the Genoese baroque has been insufficiently considered or appreciated.0Lavishly illustrated, 'A Superb Baroque' is comprehensive, encompassing all the major media and participants. Presented are some 140 select works by the celebrated foreigners drawn to the city and its flourishing environment. Offering three levels of exploration-essays that frame and interpret, section introductions that characterize principal currents and stages, and texts that elucidate individual works-this volume is by far the most extensive study of the Genoese baroque in the English language.00Exhibition: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, USA (03.05.-16.08.2020) / Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome, Italy (03.10.2020 - 10.01.2021).

Book Jennifer the Intimate Story of a Woman

Download or read book Jennifer the Intimate Story of a Woman written by Rose M. Longsworth and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-09 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the intimate story of a woman, who since childhood felt the strong, convincing and sweeping awakening of her feelings, emotions, passions and wants. But as result of a rigorous sexual and religious education, which prevented her from expressing everything she felt with such strength; unable to contain that fire that at her tender age was devouring her, she opted to indulge in her inner world, her mind. There, anything could happen, without inhibitions, without censure, without looks or inquisitorial demands, without reproach or punishment; until she was able to live it in reality. Without a conscious effort, her great inventiveness had prepared and turned her into a girl with great sexual sensibility. A thousand lives would have to be needed in order to live the heated fantasies with the men that passed through her fictitious and real realm; they delighted her, made her feel as if she was the most loved woman, wanted, spoiled, the queen of her lovers heart. And they all had something in common: an uncontrollable passion and constant excitement that maintained interest and sexual appetite skin deep. Always quick at every moment in order to live the most explosive experiences, where pleasure and sensuality sprouted in spurs. How can a woman that grew up with these sorts of dreams, reaches a draw with such rigidity that surrounds her? How is she able to survive and make her life appear as much as possible as her luxurious and happy world? How does she make her heated dreams materialize? Unconsciously, she had prepared to live in reality, which up to now had only occurred in her interior space. It is known, psychologists teach this, that what we think, hope and recreate with an imagination filled with emotion, passion and persistence, tends to materialize. And this is what happened to Jennifer Life takes incredible turns in the existence of this woman; it presents sharp contrasts and seeming contradictions in her personality. The circumstances that take her through new paths, will take the reader through a surprising plot, where the turns of things will keep the reader in suspense and wanting to know what would come next. What will the end of the story of this interesting, yet ordinary, life of a woman who could have easily been the neighbor you see every day, be?

Book Irish Cultures of Travel

Download or read book Irish Cultures of Travel written by Raphaël Ingelbien and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses travel texts aimed at the emergent Irish middle classes in the long nineteenth century. Unlike travel writing about Ireland, Irish travel writing about foreign spaces has been under-researched. Drawing on a wide range of neglected material and focusing on selected European destinations, this study draws out the distinctive features of an Irish corpus that often subverts dominant trends in Anglo-Saxon travel writing. As it charts Irish participation in a new ‘mass’ tourism, it shows how that participation led to heated ideological debates in Victorian and Edwardian Irish print culture. Those debates culminate in James Joyce’s ‘The Dead’, which is here re-read through new discursive contextualizations. This book sheds new light on middle-class culture in pre-independence Ireland, and on Ireland’s relation to Europe. The methodology used to define its Irish corpus also makes innovative contributions to the study of travel writing.
