Book Urban Development Challenges Risks and Resilience in Asian Mega Cities

Download or read book Urban Development Challenges Risks and Resilience in Asian Mega Cities written by R.B. Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, an interdisciplinary research group of faculty members, researchers, professionals, and planners contributed to an understanding of the dynamics and dimensions of emerging challenges and risks in megacities in the rapidly changing urban environments in Asia and examined emerging resilience themes from the point of view of sustainability and public policy. The world’s urban population in 2009 was approximately 3.4 billion and Asia’s urban population was about 1.72 billion. Between 2010 and 2020, 411 million people will be added to Asian cities (60 % of the growth in the world’s urban population). By 2020, of the world’s urban population of 4.2 billion, approximately 2.2 billion will be in Asia. China and India will contribute 31.3 % of the total world urban population by 2025. Developing Asia’s projected global share of CO2 emissions for energy consumption will increase from 30 % in 2006 to 43 % by 2030. City regions serve as magnets for people, enterprise, and culture, but with urbanisation , the worst form of visible poverty becomes prominent. The Asian region, with a slum population of an estimated 505.5 million people, remains host to over half of the world’s slum population . The book provides information on a comprehensive range of environmental threats faced by the inhabitants of megacities. It also offers a wide and multidisciplinary group of case studies from rapidly growing megacities (with populations of more than 5 million) from developed and developing countries of Asia.

This book, like its predecessor in this series (City Region and Regionalism, 1947), is not about planning. It is concerned with the inherent geographical structure of society upon which planning must be based, and it insists that knowledge of the spatial anatomy of society must precede the treatment of its defects. The study is limited to the countries of the United States and western Europe, though its procedures and generalizations can be extended to other lands.

Book excerpt: Covid Superheroes: Over A Year Of Caring, Giving And Making A Difference To The Lives Of People The past year or so has thrown up some very unlikely superheroes. These are individuals, groups of persons, or organizations that have played a critical role in tackling multiple dimensions of the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on people and life in general. Covid Warriors, as they have come to be known, have made a difference in some way or the other. In our Cover Story, we bring you some moving stories of determination, commitment, and caring. From India Cares, an organisation formed to help people across the country, to voluntary organizations active in specific cities of Odisha, we take a look at the kind of work that is being done on the ground. We also introduce you to Global Odia Volunteers (GOV), a group which has brought together Odias in different parts of the world to pool in with help. With the pandemic continuing to take a toll, organizations have also come forward to provide a helping hand when it comes to health issues. Some groups are active in the field of mental health and awareness as well. This edition’s Cover Story features their efforts too. The City Lights section catches up with the creative minds behind ‘The Mountain Hockey’, the first Odia documentary to be streamed by an OTT platform. Filmmakers Avinash Pradhan and Debashish Mohapatra tell us about the effort that went into the project and their dream of bringing about a revolution in the Odia entertainment industry. Our CityZen for the edition is Debasis Panigrahi, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who has made a name for himself as a writer, poet and lyricist. He opens up about his passion as he talks about his literary journey and the choice of subjects. In ScreenShots, we pay tribute to renowned Odia music director Amaranedra Mohanty who passed away recently. The special feature recalls the high points of an illustrious career spanning nearly 30 years. The section also has an interview with actress Anu Choudhary where she discusses her upcoming film even as she relishes the success of her last two outings. To understand how passion can help one chart a clear course to success, one only needs to look at the career graph of young music composer Abhijit Tripathy. The 25-year-old opens up in a Question-Answer session as he talks about Odia music, his work so far and plans for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new NFL Centennial Edition A multi-billion-dollar entertainment empire, the National Football League is a coast-to-coast obsession that borders on religion and dominates our sports-mad culture. But today's NFL also provides a stage for playing out important issues roiling American society. The updated and expanded edition of NFL Football observes the league's centennial by following the NFL into the twenty-first century, where off-the-field concerns compete with touchdowns and goal line stands for headlines. Richard Crepeau delves into the history of the league and breaks down the new era with an in-depth look at the controversies and dramas swirling around pro football today: Tensions between players and Commissioner Roger Goodell over collusion, drug policies, and revenue; The firestorm surrounding Colin Kaepernick and protests of police violence and inequality; Andrew Luck and others choosing early retirement over the threat to their long-term health; Paul Tagliabue's role in covering up information on concussions; The Super Bowl's evolution into a national holiday. Authoritative and up to the minute, NFL Football continues the epic American success story.
