Si tratta di una esposizione la cui ampiezza e profondità non ha precedenti nella riflessione filosofico-musicale. Il libro si chiude con una appendice sulla teoria cinese dei dodici lyu come approfondimento del tema dell'alterazione per trasposizione ed escludendo dunque che si possa trattare di una "scala cromatica".
