Download or read book Sunny Skies and Sudden Storms written by Barbara Anne Ashley and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a remote little farm, a retired couple named Jan and Bill—Mom and Dad, to their dogs—have a pleasant, quiet home. To the casual observer, life on the farm may seem calm, predictable, and even a bit boring. But when strange events make their way to the farmhouse door, things can get interesting in a hurry. And when you stir in a diverse group of people and places, sometimes you get a delicious dish, and sometimes you get fireworks. One Christmas Eve, a starving bloodhound appears on their doorstep. Mom and Dad immediately take him in and care for him, and when they find his owner has passed away, the dog gets renamed Hero and joins the family, along with Buddy, Gypsy, and Pumpkin. Then, when Mom and Dad discover the new kindergarten teacher at the nearby school has a stalker, they rush to the rescue. Meanwhile, two very different pairs of young people experience of the beginning of serious love and commitment. The farm may offer a quiet visit or tumultuous occasion, but as long as the animals and people are safe, fed, and sheltered at the end of the day, it’s a good day. This narrative follows events in the lives of an older couple living on a farm as their home becomes the center of a variety of dramas small and large.

Book excerpt: This book traces the history of over 70 small airlines that operated in Florida and Georgia from the 1910s through the 1990s. "Sunshine Skies: Historic Commuter Airlines of Florida and Georgia" offers the aviation enthusiast one of the most comprehensive glimpses of what was once one the most colorful and fascinating facets of the airline industry, the commuter. The book addresses in painstaking detail the carriers that transported passengers in some of the most classic, rare and historic aircraft to grace the skies of the Sunshine and Peach States during what was undeniably the independent commuter airline's Golden Age of the late 1960's to early 1980's. Sunshine Skies is complete with rare and invaluable photos of ramp, runway and in-flight operations. It also features exhaustive fleet listings, and hard to find timetable covers. Many airlines that have faded from memory and flown into extinction are here: PBA/Naples Airlines, Marco Island Airways, Shawnee Airlines, Mackey International, Air Florida, Air South, Florida Air Lines, Sun Airlines and over 70 others. "Sunshine Skies: Historic Commuter Airlines of Florida and Georgia" is a must for the serious airline afficianado and should be in the library of every airplane lover who ever stopped whatever they were doing to catch a glimpse of a PBA DC-3 lumbering across the Florida Everglades, or to watch a Martin 404 with its brilliant red, orange and yellow Air South cheat lines descend with its exagerated nose-down attitude during finals into Brunswick, Georgia.

When no weapons were found on the Afghan bodies, the Army prosecuted Lorance for murder. “The most powerful case to date for the exoneration of imprisoned Army Lt. Clint Lorance.” —Sun-Sentinel Saving Sandoval by Craig W. Two weeks later, Army Criminal Investigation Command descended upon Sandoval’s unit, trying to link Sandoval and others to war crimes, including murder. “A revealing, real-life courtroom drama, reminiscent of A Few Good Men.” —Hunter R. Book excerpt: The true story of the most despicable political prosecution in American military history—in the book that won a presidential pardon. On the morning of July 2, 2012, in the most dangerous warzone in the world, Lieutenant Clint Lorance took command of his small band of American paratroopers at the spearhead of the American War in Afghanistan. Intelligence reports that morning warned of a Taliban ambush against Lorance’s platoon. Fifteen minutes into their patrol, three military-age Afghan males crowded on a motorcycle and sped aggressively down a Taliban-controlled dirt road toward Lorance’s men… Three weeks earlier, outside the massive American Kandahar Airfield, Taliban terrorists struck by motorcycle, riding into a crowded area, detonating body-bombs and killing twenty-two people. Sixty-three days before that, three Ohio National Guard soldiers were murdered in another motorcycle-suicide bombing. Suicide-by-motorcycle had become a common Taliban murder-tactic against Americans… It was a split-second decision: Either open fire and protect his men or ignore the speeding motorcycle and pray his men weren’t about to get blown up. Lorance ordered his men to fire. When no weapons were found on the Afghan bodies, the Army betrayed one of its finest young officers and prosecuted Lorance for murder. Hiding crucial evidence from the military jury and ordering Lorance’s own men to testify against him or face murder charges themselves, the Army railroaded Lorance into a 20-year prison sentence at Fort Leavenworth. Updated with breaking news, plus a copy of the pardon! “Gripping…. A true-life thriller... [a] page-turner.”—The Baltimore Sun “This one will keep you planted in your reading chair from start to finish.”—Sun-Sentinel

Book Sunny Skies Shady Characters

Download or read book Sunny Skies Shady Characters written by James Dooley and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thirty years starting in the mid-1970s, the byline of Jim Dooley appeared on riveting investigative stories of organized crime and political corruption that headlined the front page of Honolulu’s morning daily. In Sunny Skies, Shady Characters, James Dooley revisits highlights of his career as a hard-hitting investigative reporter for the Honolulu Advertiser and, in later years, for KITV television and the online Hawaii Reporter. His lively backstories on how he chased these high-profile scandals make fascinating reading, while providing an insider’s look at the business of journalism and the craft of investigative reporting. Dooley’s first assignment as an investigative journalist involved the city housing project of Kukui Plaza, which introduced him to the “pay to play” method of awarding government contracts to obliging consultants. In later stories, he scrutinized bloody struggles over illicit gambling revenue, the murder of a city prosecutor’s son, local syndicate ties to the Teamsters Union, and the dealings of Bishop Estate. His groundbreaking coverage of the forays by yakuza into Hawaii and the continental United States were the first of its kind in American journalism. As Dooley pursued stories from the underside of island society, names of respected public figures and those of violent criminals filled his notebook: entertainer Don Ho, U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, Governors George Ariyoshi and Ben Cayetano, Mayor Frank Fasi, and notorious felons Henry Huihui, Nappy Pulawa, and Ronnie Ching. Woven throughout is the name of Big Island rancher Larry Mehau—was he the “godfather of organized crime” in Hawaii as alleged by the FBI, or simply an ex-cop who befriended power brokers in the course of doing business for his security guard firm? The book includes a timeline of Mehau’s activities to allow readers to judge for themselves.
