In Christ Jesus there is neither male nor female. Neither sex is excluded either from the blessings or the work of the Gospel. In the Old Testament there are many records of the excellencies and worthy deeds of pious women. We might speak of Sarah, and Rebekah; of Miriam, and Deborah; of Jael, and Jephtha's daughter; of Naomi, and Ruth; of Esther, and Hannah; of the Shunamite, and the widow of Sarepta. In these, and many other women of olden times, we see talent and zeal consecrated to the cause of true religion; and in some of them the brightest examples of moral heroism. In the gospel narratives the names of pious and zealous females often occur. We have Mary, the mother of our Lord, one of the purest characters of sacred history. Elizabeth, her cousin, mother of John the Baptist; and pious Anna, the old widow, waiting for the consolation of Israel, are amiable characters. We see women thronging to Christ with their diseases--some crying for Him to help their afflicted children--some bringing their infants for Him to bless--some who have been sinners melting in...
