Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1876 Rolf Johnson and his family left Illinois for Phelps County, Nebraska. There they faced the challenges of pioneering on the Great Plains: digging wells, building sod houses, plowing and planting crops, and fighting prairie fires. Johnson's diary goes beyond individual conquest, however, and provides insight into the great cooperative endeavor of plains settlement. Rolf's Swedish family and neighbors worked and socialized with other Swedes just as nearby Danish settlers remained in close physical and cultural contact with other Danish immigrants. A very eligible ninetten-year-old bachelor, Rolf also offers touching vignettes on the rituals of courting. Abruptly, with no explanation in his diary, and with no itinerary or prospects, Rolf left home in 1879 "with the intention of going west for a season." His departure may have been sparked by the marital fervor exhibited by a female suitor. Rolf felt he was "not quite prepared to leave the state of single blessedness for that of double misery." In Sidney, Nebraska, he ran with the "sporting" element, who showed him photographs of "fast women of the town stark naked." He found employment with a wagon freighter headed for the Black Hills, where he saw Calamity Jane in action. Rolf's education continued until the diaries end in Cubero, New Mexico, in 1880. He returned to Phelps County in 1882 and remained there for most of his life. Rolf's lively diaries offer an entertaining eyewitness account of pioneer life and an unmatched resource for historians.

By professional standards, Christopher Matthew Smith is a gifted, dynamic Madison Avenue adman, a feared but highly respected opponent in the game of advertising. In love, however, he has not fared as well. Twice divorced, Chris has soured on the idea of long-term relationships. Until he meets Elly Flowers, an attractive, unhappily married mother of two. After six months of friendly encounters, the budding love story of Chris and Elly is interrupted by a lengthy geographical separation. Elly grudgingly moves to Southern California with her family while Chris remains in New York. Fourteen years later, the two meet again in San Diego where they enjoy a five-day journey through the romantic sites in and around the city. But their surprising, albeit passionate, reunion is short-lived. The bond between them is tested, emotionally and physically, as each experiences a separate accident with potentially disastrous results, Chris on a fishing excursion, Elly, in her auto near the Pacific bluffs of La Jolla. Attempting to endure such crises challenges the integrity of the relationship between Chris and Elly. Adventures of a Sunflower is a moving account of two extraordinary people determined to spend their lifetime together.

Download or read book Sunflower written by Gyula Krudy and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gyula Krúdy is a marvelous writer who haunted the taverns of Budapest and lived on its streets while turning out a series of mesmerizing, revelatory novels that are among the masterpieces of modern literature. Krúdy conjures up a world that is entirely his own—dreamy, macabre, comic, and erotic—where urbane sophistication can erupt without warning into passion and madness. In Sunflower young Eveline leaves the city and returns to her country estate to escape the memory of her desperate love for the unscrupulous charmer Kálmán. There she encounters the melancholy Álmos-Dreamer, who is languishing for love of her, and is visited by the bizarre and beautiful Miss Maszkerádi, a woman who is a force of nature. The plot twists and turns; elemental myth mingles with sheer farce: Krúdy brilliantly illuminates the shifting contours and acid colors of the landscape of desire. John Bátki’s outstanding translation of Sunflower is the perfect introduction to the world of Gyula Krúdy, a genius as singular as Robert Walser, Bruno Schulz, or Joseph Roth.
