The direct meaning of the name "Sundara" is "beautiful" referring to the literary excellence of this Kanda. It brings out two great characters , Hanuman standing for the ideal of masculine strength and Sita for the feminine expression of courage. This book deals with the heroic exploits of Hanuman for one day and night in which he crosses over to Sri Lanka, finds Sita ,defeats the enemy ,sets fire to the city and returns with the news of Sita's discovery. Book Sundara K nda

Download or read book Sundara K nda written by BS Murthy and published by Self Imprint. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Mahabharata's Bhagvad-Gita is taken as a philosophical guide, Ramayana's Sundara Kãnda is sought for spiritual solace; many believe that reading it or hearing it recited would remove all hurdles and usher in good tidings! Miracles apart, it's in the nature of this great epic to inculcate fortitude and generate hope in man for it’s a depiction of how Hanuman goes about his errand against all odds. Besides, it portrays how Seetha, on the verge of self-immolation, overcomes despair to see life in a new light? With rhythm of its verse and the flow of the narrative this sloka to sloka transcreation of the canto beautiful of Valmiki's adi kavya - the foremost poetical composition in the world, Hanuman's Odyssey that paves the way for Rama to rescue his kidnapped wife is bound to charm the readers and listeners alike. Interestingly, as the following verse illustrates, it was the forerunner of the magic realism of our times – “Gripped she then him by shadow / Cast which Hanuman coast to coast, Recalled he in dismay then / What Sugreev said at outset / That one fiend had aptitude / To grip its prey by mere shadow.” On a personal note, my paternal grandfather, Bulusu Thimmaiah-garu, like many in his time, was a life-long practitioner of Sundara Kãnda parayana (the epic’s daily recital in part or full), whose spirituality could have providentially guided me in this, rather an effortless, trans-creative endeavour.

Book excerpt: This book is about God and Science, exploring the concept of God with particular reference to Sanatana Dharma, also known as Hinduism. Sanatana Dharma is eternal religion, and irrespective of a particular individual’s faith, universally it can be followed. Thus, Hinduism stands above all other religions and is a way of life that can be adopted, as it is universal in adaptability. A classic example is that of Dr. Annie Besant, the founder and president of the Theosophical Society of India, who remained a Christian despite adapting to the Hindu way of life. Want to know why we have to go to a temple to pray, why idol worship should be followed? The answers are here. Following Sanatana Dharma alone can give an individual God-realisation or liberation. The scientific basis of Sanatana Dharma is explored in detail in relevant chapters. In short, this book will be a lucid introduction to Sanatana Dharma. Every believer of God will find it worth reading to have a conceptual understanding of God, prayer and the science behind them.

Book Sound of Silence

Download or read book Sound of Silence written by Asha Krishnakumar and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything is set for the first day of the Rama Navami celebrations at Karnataka’s Bidaram Krishnappa Rama Mandira, with Rajkumar Bharathi’s concert getting the top billing. Rajkumar begins with the traditional Hamsadwani. Soon, rasikas are immersed in the melody of the enchanting voice, the perfect combination of swaras, ragas and the bhakti of the lyrics. But on the dais, Rajkumar is uneasy. His voice is getting ‘chopped’ on and off, and he is unable to raise the pitch. He even feels like stopping the concert midway. But braves on and contains the damage quickly, without the audience or accompanying artists getting an inkling of his trouble. Or, so he thinks! He steps down from the dais to a standing ovation. All seems well until a middle-aged man asks him, “Sir, why did your voice change?” Rajkumar feels utterly exposed. Then begins a long, arduous struggle for one of the most revered singers of the times. How did Rajkumar brave the difficult times? How did the music world react to it? How did he retune himself to become a maker of music? Asha Krishnakumar addresses these questions in Sound of Silence, after interviewing nearly hundred close associates of the legend.

Book Kamba Ramayana

Download or read book Kamba Ramayana written by P S Sundaram and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2002-05-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterly translation of the Tamil version of Ramayana The epic story of Rama, which is part of the Indian collective consciousness, has been retold in many regional languages. Pre-eminent among the many vernacular retellings of the Ramayana is the twelfth-century Tamil version by Kamban. The son of a temple drummer, Kamban is reputed to have had an impressive mastery of Tamil and Sanskrit classics. Fascinated by the lore of Ramayana, he immersed himself totally in it. Though Kamban acknowledges his indebtedness to the Sanskrit version of the Ramayana by Valmiki, his is an independent work, enriched by various religious, philosophical and literary influences. The Kamba Ramayana differs from Valmiki’s in significant ways. Though cast in the heroic mould of a Purushotama or ‘the best among men’, Valmiki’s Rama is still a man. Kamban, on the other hand, never allows the reader to forget the godhood of Rama. His Ravana too, though flawed, is a heroic figure. While Valmiki’s diction is sparse and direct, Kamban’s exuberant prose sparkles with wit and inventiveness. Translated into English by the late P.S. Sundaram, this edition has been abridged and edited by his long-time friend N.S. Jagannathan. Though pared down from the original six volumes to a single one, this translation retains the magic and poetry of the original.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth and most popular book of the Ramayana of Valmiki, the Sundarakanda, recounts the adventures of the monkey hero Hanuman in leaping across the ocean to the island citadel of Lanka. Once there, he scours the city for the abducted Princess Sita. The poet vividly describes the opulence of the court of the demon king, Ravana, the beauty of his harem, and the hideous deformity of Sita's wardresses. After witnessing Sita's stern rejection of Ravana's blandishments, Hanuman reveals himself to the princess and restores her hope of rescue. The great monkey then wreaks havoc on the royal park and fights a series of hair-raising battles with Ravana's generals. Permitting himself to be captured by the warrior Indrajit, Hanuman is led into the presence of Ravana, whom he admonishes for his lechery. His tail is set ablaze, but he escapes his bonds and leaping from rooftop to rooftop, sets fire to the city. Taking leave of Sita, Hanuman once more leaps the ocean to rejoin his monkey companions. This is the fifth volume translated from the critical edition of the Valmiki Ramayana. It contains an extensive introduction, exhaustive notes, and a comprehensive bibliography.
