Book Sun Moon and Sothis

Download or read book Sun Moon and Sothis written by Lynn E. Rose and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ancient Egyptian Calendar followed the movements of the star Sothis (Sirius) as well as the sun. This book discusses how the Egyptians divided time, and then turns to a detailed examination of how Egyptian lunar calendars were tied by succeeding astronomers into the Julian Calendar, and thus into our own calendrical reckonings. The author suggests that a mistake in ancient calculations may mean a substantial error in our dating of the Middle Kingdom, meaning that it may be a much later period than commonly assumed.

Book excerpt: As an old hippie, Jesus freak, I cannot help but question authority. I have done so with established beliefs of major denominations. I compare what denominations teach as sound doctrine and compare them to what the Bible the sole authority teaches in reality. For example, hell is accepted and taught as literal fire and eternal torment when Scripture actually reveals something opposite and totally different.

Book The Theology of Hathor of Dendera

Download or read book The Theology of Hathor of Dendera written by Barbara A. Richter and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ptolemaic period witnessed an enormous increase in the number of hieroglyphic signs and iconographic elements (composite crowns, scepters, and cult objects). The ancient scribes exploited this complexity when composing the reliefs used in temple decoration, selecting particular words, hieroglyphic signs, and iconographic elements in order to create interconnected multiple layers of meaning, forming a tapestry of sound and sight. The Theology of Hathor of Dendera examines these techniques on both micro- and macro-levels, from their smallest details to their broadest thematic connections, foregrounding individual techniques to determine the words and phrases singled out for emphasis. By synthesizing their use in the three-dimensional space of the most important cult chamber in the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, this new method of analysis not only reveals the most essential characteristics of the local theology, but also shows how the ancient scribes envisioned the universe and the place of humankind within it.

Book Scientific Traditions in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East

Download or read book Scientific Traditions in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East written by Sofie Schiødt and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative insights on astronomy, divination, and medicine from ancient texts The contributions in this volume revolve around a set of interconnected topics in the ancient sciences: medicine, astronomy, astrology, and divination. Several essays present unpublished textual sources or editions of new source material on divination (e.g., dream interpretation, personal astrology, and Sothis divination) and medicine (e.g., dermatology, gynecology, and apotropaic incantations). Other contributions provide new insights into known corpora or texts, such as the Assyro-Babylonian omens, the Hippocratic treatise Places in Man, Greco-Egyptian medical texts, and the vast astronomical corpus of Greco-Roman Egypt. The interdisciplinary milieu in which these essays were generated, under the aegis of the international Scientific Papyri from Ancient Egypt (SciPap) project, means that many of the studies embrace an explicitly and well-researched cross-cultural and comparative approach, revealing similarities in both certain conceptualizations of disease and healing, and astronomical literature and divinatory practice, across the Mediterranean and Near East. This book will be of interest primarily to specialists in the history of medicine, science, divination, and magic, as well as to papyrologists, Egyptologists, and Assyriologists.

Book excerpt: Whoever wants to understand the genesis of modern Science has to follow three lines of development, all starting in antiquity, which were brought together in the work of ISAAC NEWTON, namely 1. Ancient Mathematics => DESCARTES 2. Ancient Astronomy => COPERNICUS : ~~~~ I=> NEWTON 3. Ancient Mechanics => GALILEO => HUYGENS In Science Awakening I (Dutch edition 1950, first Eng1ish edition 1954, second 1961, first German edition 1956, second 1965) I have followed the first 1ine, giving an outline of the development of Mathematics in Egypt, Babylonia, and Greece. Volume II, dealing with Egyptian and Baby1onian Astronomy first appeared in German under the title 'Die Anfänge der Astronomie' (Noordhoff, Groningen 1965 and Birkhäu ser, Basel 1968). The volume was written in collaboration with PETER HUBER (Swiss Federal School of Technology, Zürich). HUBER has written considerable parts of Chap ters 3 and 4, in particular all transcriptions of cuneiform texts in these chapters. I also had much help from ERNST WEIDNER (Graz), MARTIN VERMASEREN (Amsterdam), JOSEF JANSEN (Leiden) and MANU LEUMANN (Zürich).

Book So This Is Life

Download or read book So This Is Life written by Anne Manne and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So This Is Life is a wonderfully evocative account of youth that will surely take its place among the classics of Australian childhood. At age seven, after her parents' marriage broke down, Anne Manne travelled with her mother and sisters from Adelaide to the Central Victorian countryside to begin a new life. So This Is Life is not a conventional memoir but a haunting and luminous account told through storiesandmdash;unexpected moments of epiphanyandmdash;where meaning, suddenly and sometimes shockingly, reveals itself. Possessing an astonishingly faithful and vivid memory of the pain, fear and joy of childhood; a sensibility keenly alive to the beauty of the landscape, the fellow-creatureliness of animals and the comedy, tragedy and dignity of the lives of the country folk she grew up among, So This Is Life shows a powerful moral vision being shaped, about the meaning of kindness, and the desolation of grief. It depicts worlds as far apart as the faded gentility of former goldfields wealth, and the patriarchal spivvery of the country racetrack. Full of inconsolable pain but also impish humour, these stories sparkle like gems.
