Book excerpt: Pyramids had a specific function and this book endeavours to detail exactly how and when they operated. Pharaoh Khufu built what probably stands as the greatest ever construction that humans have produced (given the tech constraints of the time); the Great pyramid. Its accuracy, and size are just awe-inspiring; it was the tallest building in the World until the Cathedrals of Europe arrived on the scene! According to ancient historians though, Khufu was never buried there and when the Arabs first broke in to the upper chambers in 820AD, they found the sarcophagus empty! It had been ceremonially sealed without the king inside!! Are we expected to believe that they built the World’s greatest ever construction as a tomb, then sealed it forever, but without the body of the king? Isn’t that a little odd? The reality is, it was meant for something much greater than his tomb. What purpose does such a grand resting place for your body really fulfil? It appeases the ego of the living king, but thereafter, it achieves nothing. A hole in the ground can preserve the body just as well, and in fact it probably has, for that’s where most believe Khufu was buried––in an as yet undiscovered shaft tomb. Very unceremonious for someone who had such a magnificent structure built! Khufu’s father was King Snefru; he built the World’s two tallest buildings at the time. We could reason that one was to be his tomb, but then what was the other one for? The forgotten story of the pyramids is that they were principally built for the king’s Heb Sed festival, the most important event in his lifetime––should he live long enough to perform it. He had to wait 30 years before he could participate in this magical ceremony, so he spent 20 odd years building a structure that was vital for its success. After 30 years at the helm, the king was supposed to be ritually killed. Heb Sed enabled him to avoid this dire fate. His reign would be extended if he passed the rigorous tests involved in the ceremonies, but not only that, he would also become a living incarnation of the Sun-god. This ensured that he would live on for all eternity. Pyramids weren’t built for vanity, instead they were vital mechanisms for achieving these ends and so every king in the Old Kingdom constructed a pyramid to facilitate his immortality. This is the third and final book in the series, to be read after 'Architecture of Ra' and ‘Tombs of the Gods’.

Book Egyptian Solar Religion in the New Kingdom

Download or read book Egyptian Solar Religion in the New Kingdom written by Jan Assmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and expanded, this volume deals with the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, which have come down to us in a state which is both extremely fragmentary and complex. New material - especially hymns collected in Theban tombs - now allows a much more precise allocation of religious texts and ideas in terms of time, place and social context. Within the field of solar religion, no less than five different traditions have to be distinguished: 1) the liturgical traditions of the royal solar cult, which for their secrecy and exclusivity are labelled the "mysteries" of the sun cult; 2) the traditional mythology of the solar course expressed in hymns and pictorial representations; 3) the revolutionary process culminating in the Amarna period, which discards the mythic images and gives a monotheistic construction of the solar course, a process which starts before Akhenaten's revolution; 4) the theology of Amun-Re, the God of Thebes, before the Amarna Period, a theology of primacy where one god acts as chief of a pantheon; and 5) the quite different theology of this same Amun-Re after Amarna, a theology which answers the monotheistic experience by developing a kind of pantheism - the concept of the hidden god - who is both cosmic god and personal saviour.

Book Tombs of the Gods

Download or read book Tombs of the Gods written by Kyle Weyburne and published by Kyle Weyburne. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve completely misunderstood the purpose of the pyramids. They weren’t built primarily as tombs, instead they were intended to be used by Pharaoh while he was still alive. In very ancient times, the king was only allowed to rule for 30 years––then he’d be ritually killed! They didn’t want an old man in charge. One day, a Pharaoh was nearing his 30th year and decided he didn’t want to die, so came up with a set of rituals that would enable him to live on. It was called ‘Heb Sed’. This sacred ceremony was more than just a life-saver though, it also enabled the king to merge with the Sun-god. After death, Egyptian kings were believed to board the Sun-boat where they would shine down on their subjects for all eternity. However, many things could go awry in this process, particularly under the eyes of a successor. What if they bungled the funeral? What if they were a rival? Heb Sed enabled all this to occur while the king was still alive so that he could preside over proceedings, ensuring its success. And the bonus of being able to do this while alive is that some part of the Pharaoh would board the Sun-boat and in doing so, the king would become a divinity––the Pharaoh became a living God-king! But all this could only happen if they built a strange, pyramid-shaped structure to enable this potent magic to take place. So they built pyramids. And they got bigger and more magnificent with the passing of each King. This madness came to a head with Pharaoh Snefru who built two massive pyramids; the two biggest man-made structures in the World! How do you outdo this? While his son ‘Khufu’ only managed to build one pyramid, it was the most impressive structure ever built by humans. Still is, in my book. And yes, it might have functioned as his tomb, although Strabo and Diodorus swear black and blue that it wasn’t, however, it was entirely geared to the Sun-god, as you will find out... it was entirely geared for the King's Heb Sed. This book is the sequel to Architecture of Ra, but can be read independently of it. It also delves into the myths of Egypt as well as those of other cultures (Jason & the Argonauts, Icarus, Jonah, Thor, Hercules…). I don’t like calling these stories 'myths' because they actually belonged to living religions and to make that grade, the stories had to include information seminal to that culture. And if the texts contain this knowledge, then so did their religious buildings. The knowledge encoded in Egyptian legends is also encoded in their pyramids!

Book Temple of the Cosmos

Download or read book Temple of the Cosmos written by Jeremy Naydler and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1996-04-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this guide to the cosmology of ancient Egypt, Jeremy Naydler recreates the experience of living in another time and place. Temple of the Cosmos explores Egypt's sacred geography and mythology; but more importantly, it reveals with unprecedented clarity an ancient consciousness in tune with the rhythms of the earth. The ancient Egyptians experienced their gods not as remote beings but rather as psychic and natural forces, transpersonal energies that played a part in everyday life. This direct experience of the gods shaped the Egyptian concepts of human development, healing, magic, and the soul's journey through the Underworld as described in the Books of the Dead. While building on the pioneering efforts of R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz and others, Temple of the Cosmos is much more than a recapitulation of previous theories of Egyptian spirituality. Rather, this book breaks new ground by placing the work of other Egyptologists in an original, magical context. The result is a brilliant reimagining of the Egyptian worldview and its sacred path of spiritual unfolding.

Book The Sun Is a Compass

Download or read book The Sun Is a Compass written by Caroline Van Hemert and published by Little, Brown Spark. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Cheryl Strayed, the gripping story of a biologist's human-powered journey from the Pacific Northwest to the Arctic to rediscover her love of birds, nature, and adventure. During graduate school, as she conducted experiments on the peculiarly misshapen beaks of chickadees, ornithologist Caroline Van Hemert began to feel stifled in the isolated, sterile environment of the lab. Worried that she was losing her passion for the scientific research she once loved, she was compelled to experience wildness again, to be guided by the sounds of birds and to follow the trails of animals. In March of 2012, she and her husband set off on a 4,000-mile wilderness journey from the Pacific rainforest to the Alaskan Arctic, traveling by rowboat, ski, foot, raft, and canoe. Together, they survived harrowing dangers while also experiencing incredible moments of joy and grace -- migrating birds silhouetted against the moon, the steamy breath of caribou, and the bond that comes from sharing such experiences. A unique blend of science, adventure, and personal narrative, The Sun is a Compass explores the bounds of the physical body and the tenuousness of life in the company of the creatures who make their homes in the wildest places left in North America. Inspiring and beautifully written, this love letter to nature is a lyrical testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Winner of the 2019 Banff Mountain Book Competition: Adventure Travel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superphysics, etc. Superphysics The Practical Kheri-Heb Kheri-Heb Mastery The Book of Amon-Ra Tao te Duat Modern Egyptian Sorcery Hekaurshen In Superphysics you will rediscover the nature of beliefs, how magic works, and the purpose of religion. All 3 embody the very essence of the Egyptian mind. You will also discover what cold light is and the nature of spirits, how to restore life to the seemingly dead, heal people with bioenergy, and the Afterlife. Learn the secret language of Atlantis and its non-mythical heritage, based on memories of Atlanteans recently reincarnated (fulfilling the Edgar Cayce prophecy). Included are several recent Egyptian magic books, plus a book dedicated to the worship of the Egyptian Creator Amon-Ra (added as an example relating to Superphysics). You will learn that prayer is actually a psychic ability, and that through religion people learn how to work it, using mythologies as training wheels of the mind. The ability of Chrono-kinesis, or the ability to influence the future/Time, figures prominently in magic in the form of spells, rituals, and other mental focuses. Numerous experiments were undertaken in the proof of these theories, regardless of ethics. Spirits are indeed real, not fantasy, but modern society is attempting to disprove their existence in the belief of moving forward. This, then, is an archaeological exploration of the supernatural. A good reference for anyone interested in new science.

Book excerpt: Pictures from the Bronze Age are numerous, vivid and complex. There is no other prehistoric period that has produced such a wide range of images spanning from rock art to figurines to decoration on bronzes and gold. Fourteen papers, with a geographical coverage from Scandinavia to the Iberian Peninsula, examine a wide range of topics reflecting the many forms and expressions of Bronze Age imagery encompassing important themes including religion, materiality, mobility, interaction, power and gender. Contributors explore specific elements of rock art in some detail such as the representation of the human form; images of manslaughter; and gender identities. The relationship between rock art imagery and its location on the one hand, and metalwork and networks of trade and exchange of both materials and ideas on the other, are considered. Modern and ancient perceptions of rock art are discussed, in particular the changing perceptions that have developed during almost 150 years of documented research. Picturing the Bronze Age is based on an international workshop with the same title held in Tanum, Sweden in October 2012.
