Book excerpt: The town of Lincoln is nestled in the lush green valley of the Rio Bonito in Southeastern New Mexico. It lies on US Route 380 about 57 miles west of Roswell and south of the Lincoln National Forest. Lincoln has been a National Landmark since 1960, and historians often refer to it as the most authentic Old West town remaining in the United States. Spanish settlers arrived in the area during the 1840s. By the 1860s, Lincoln served as a supply center for local ranches, mines, and nearby Fort Stanton. Lincoln merchants vied for lucrative government contracts, and the famous Lincoln County War erupted. As a result, Lincoln holds a unique place in American history, connected with the names of Lew Wallace, Billy the Kid, Sheriff Pat Garrett, and John Chisum. Seventeen historic buildings and four museums highlight the town as well as an annual folk pageant, The Last Escape of Billy the Kid, held since 1949.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating story exists just below Seattles surface, buried in the citys many historic cemeteries. Founded in 1872 on land acquired from Doc Maynard, Lake View Cemetery holds the remains of one of Seattles favorite sons, Bruce Lee, whose son Brandon Lee is buried beside him. Maynard is also buried here, along with most of the Seattle pioneers, including the Dennys, Borens, Maynards, Yeslers, and Morans. Princess Angeline, Chief Sealths daughter, was buried here in a canoe-shaped coffin, and Madame Damnables remains supposedly turned to stone. Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery, founded in 1884 by the Denny family, contains Judge Thomas Burke, known as the man who built Seattle; a Veterans Memorial Cemetery dating from the Civil War; and two cannons from the USS Constitution, famously nicknamed Old Ironsides. Mount Pleasant Cemetery, founded in 1883 in Queen Anne, is the final resting place of the labor martyrs of the Everett Massacre and William Bell, of Belltown fame. Remembrance benches for Nirvanas Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrixs memorial are also local landmarks.

Book excerpt: Pat Garrett, the sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, claimed responsibility for the death of the notorious outlaw, Billy the Kid. This charge would not be his first lie, nor would it be his last, but it would be, by far, the most prominent. In a departure from the overwhelming literature that takes lawman Pat Garrett’s story—that he killed The Kid in a happenstance meeting in an isolated cabin—as historical truth, W.C. Jameson presents evidence to the contrary.

Book excerpt: "Identity is one of the central cultural narratives of the US on which both dominant and resistant discourses draw. This critical anthology honors the topic's diversity while concentrating on one central aspect, that of newness. Construction of identities, their invention, reinvention and reformulation are discussed within four thematic categories: New Concepts and Reconsiderations, Migration and Multiple Identities, Individuation and Privatized Identity Construction, and (Re-) Inventions and Virtual Identities. Written by European as well as U. S. scholars, ranging from the 19th century to the utopian future, from mainstream canonized figures to transgender performers, from a critique of individualism to a celebration of loneliness, the articles present a cross-section of current research on U.S. identities. Book JUST SEE TO IT THAT YOU DO

Download or read book JUST SEE TO IT THAT YOU DO written by Dan B. McVickar and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago Dan McVickar began writing about his life’s experiences starting with the era of World War II when he was a small boy. Dan grew up in the small rural town of Sumner, IL. Living there was frugal but mostly pleasant. The notable exception was Dan’s experience at age 14 with being the target of religious hysteria during a church revival. High school was relatively carefree with studies directed toward studying engineering in college. The study of the atom in physics class ignited a lifelong passion for learning more about the nature of creation, i.e. the universe.
