Book A Gold Camp Called Summitville

Download or read book A Gold Camp Called Summitville written by Richard C. Huston and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1870, five Union Army veterans followed the South Fork of the Rio Grande River up to a stream that ran along the base of 13,000-foot South Mountain located in the "Alps of America." There, at a place they named Wightman Fork, the discovery of some promising gold nuggets led to more prospecting and the eventual formation of the Summit (Summitville) Mining District in the then Colorado Territory of the United States. From a brilliant beginning to an ignoble ending, Summitville thrived, survived, and ultimately died, still boasting a history of some of the richest ore deposits in Colorado's mineral-rich San Juan Mountains. In A Gold Camp Called Summitville, the area's geology, its mining bonanzas, and personal recollections and revelations are woven together to paint an accurate picture of the company town of Summitville, its top-producing gold mines, and those who worked and lived at its rugged and demanding elevations above 11,000 feet.

Book excerpt: Colleen Fitzgerald’s career and personal life unravel when she learns that the man she loved, a fellow gold-stock analyst, has died under suspicious circumstances at a mine site. Taking over his research at the Summitville Mine in the mountains of southern Colorado, Colleen becomes enmeshed in the wiles of the mine’s dangerously charismatic operator who will do anything to make his mine succeed. On her quest to understand why her love died, Colleen confronts the cataclysmic forces building at the mine — Wall-Street-fueled lust for financing, a farming community that needs water, the toxic brew of heavy metals and cyanide spilling from the mine and poisoning that water, radical local-autonomy groups, and violent environmentalist renegades. Facing the devastation caused by the clash of these forces, Colleen learns to care about others again, and rediscovers hope the hard way.

Download or read book Proceedings written by Harry H. Posey and published by Colorado Geological Survey Department of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1995 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summitville is a mine site located at 11,500 feet elevation in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, USA. Mined intermittently for gold & cooper from 1870, the mine was abandoned due to bankruptcy in 1992. Remaining was a 10 million ton heap leach pad fully loaded with cyanide, 15 million tons of sulfide-rich waste rock, a draining mine adit & 550 acres of disturbed earth. Releases of acidic, metal-laden drainage prior to the bankruptcy are blamed for damage to a trout fishery downstream. Today the mine is a Superfund site being managed by the US Environmental Protection Agency. THE PROCEEDINGS range in content from geochemistry to agriculture. Its diverse studies include water chemistry, metal uptake by soils, plants, livestock & wetlands, airborne imaging spectroscopy, ore deposit geology, sediment-water metal flux, mine engineering, groundwater hydrology, water treatment technologies including biotreatment & legal assessments of the Superfund process. The volume should be useful to scientists & engineers in earth, environmental & mining sciences & to attorneys & public policy analysts. The studies, all original, were conducted mainly by the US Geological Survey, US Environmental Protection Agency & Colorado State University. This book would serve well as an environmental science text or case study for an upper level undergraduate or graduate level course.
