Book Making the Most of Summer School

Download or read book Making the Most of Summer School written by Harris Cooper and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2000-02-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summer schools serve multiple purposes for students, families, educators, and communities. The current demand for summer programs is driven by changes in American families and by calls for an educational system that is competitive globally and embodies higher academic standards. This monograph details a research synthesis that uses both meta-analytic and narrative procedures to integrate the results of 93 evaluations of summer schools. These and other findings are then examined for their implications for future research, public policy, and implementation of summer programs.

Book The Achievement Gap in Reading

Download or read book The Achievement Gap in Reading written by Rosalind Horowitz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume prominent scholars, experts in their respective fields and highly skilled in the research they conduct, address educational and reading research from varied perspectives and address what it will take to close the achievement gap—with specific attention to reading. The achievement gap is redefined as a level at which all groups can compete economically in our society and have the literacy tools and habits needed for a good life. Bringing valuable theoretical frameworks and in-depth analytical approaches to interpretation of data, the contributors examine factors that contribute to student achievement inside the school but which are also heavily influenced by out-of-school factors—such as poverty and economics, ethnicity and culture, family and community stratifications, and approaches to measurement of achievement. These out-of-school factors present possibilities for new policies and practice. The overarching theme is that achievement gaps in reading are complex and that multiple perspectives are necessary to address the problem. The breadth and depth of perspectives and content in this volume and its conceptualization of the achievement gap are a significant contribution to the field.

Book THE IMPACT OF A SUMMER READING INTERVENTION ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

Download or read book THE IMPACT OF A SUMMER READING INTERVENTION ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT written by Jonathan Thomas Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With so many students attending summer programs, it is remarkable that there is little research available aiming to investigate achievement differences in participants versus non-participants. This study examined the place of a summer program within a school district budget and curriculum. The study was designed to better understand the achievement gains, or lack thereof, of students who were invited to a summer program in one Northeast school district. The research design attempted to provide a better understanding of how the summer program impacted reading achievement of students who attended the program. The study compared the reading achievement of students who attended the summer program to the reading achievement of students who were invited to the summer program, but did not attend. The results of the study revealed there was a statistical difference in the test scores of the students who attended the summer reading program compared to those that did not attend. That statistical difference showed that students who attended the program scored higher on the formative reading assessments than did students who did not attend the program during the October assessment. Also, it was discovered that students who attended the summer reading program maintained their difference in reading achievement level over the course of the school year, in between October and May. It was concluded that attending the summer reading program set forth a difference in reading achievement that was maintained throughout the school.

Book Summer Reading

Book excerpt: Researchers Fairchild and Boulay (2002, p. 4) provided terms such as "learning loss," "the summer gap," and the "summer setback" to describe the noticeable break in learning that occurs between the end of one school year and the start of the next. For the majority of children, summer results in a three-month vacation from structured learning activities. A number of researchers have studied the summer effect on student achievement, with many of their conclusions finding that student learning does decline during the summer months. Researchers have also established the degree of decline differs by socioeconomic status. A study conducted by Cooper (1996) described in the article Lost Summers, maintains that on average, summer vacations generate an annual reading achievement gap of nearly three months between students from the middle and lower-income families. In addition, research on the correlation between the volume of summer reading and summer reading setback found that children who read during the summer months were less likely to suffer from summer reading setback and more likely to have their achievement remain constant or increase slightly. The research supports the need for continued reading practice throughout the school year and during the summer months. Establishing a summer reading program would award the students in Hamilton Township, New Jersey supplementary learning time from which they all could benefit.

Book The Effect of a Summer Reading Program on Student Reading Achievement

Download or read book The Effect of a Summer Reading Program on Student Reading Achievement written by Danielle Triplett and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between reading during the summer and reading achievement. The participants consisted of second through fifth grade students in a rural, western North Carolina elementary school. Continued focus on increasing reading abilities and closing the achievement gap prompted the interest for this research. Data were gathered through the use of qualitative and quantitative measures such as state and county assessments, surveys, and program reports. Analysis of the data indicated that the school-based summer reading program had a limited impact on reading lexile scores. At best the program helps students maintain their current reading level; however, this cannot be generalized to all students (p. 103-104). Between the May and September survey, two questions that did not decline in responses were those that dealt with reading over the summer and reading instead of playing. Both questions continued to receive high marks of dislike (p. 99). Recommendations: additional funds and support from all stakeholders; larger number of books available with a wider selection of genres, topics, and levels (p. 104-105).

Download or read book Summer Reading Challenge 2021 Journal written by A. Day to Remember Journals and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you looking for a summer reading help? Are you looking for educational activities for your child this summer? Are you ready for a challenge of reading (and talking about) 25 books this summer? If you answered YES to any of the above, you are in the right page! This summer draw and write journal is an engaging way to encourage kids to keep up with their reading during the vacation time. It is a reading summer workbook that can be used as a summer reading bridge between grades at school, or simply for fun, for the encouragement of a lifelong habit (and passion) of reading! This is how you will use it: Every time you and your child finish reading a story together, fill out a journal entry. Either you or the child can write down the answers (and possibly he/she will feel comfortable writing some brief answers, but not all - and that''s ok. You, the caregiver can simply write down what the child answers verbally). The journal ask information such as: - Book name, author name; - Date when it was read; - Who was the reader; - What the child thought about the story (ie. was it funny, scary, exciting?); - Who are the main characters, and where does the story take place; - What happened in the story; - What was the child''s favorite part and least favorite part of the story; - How much the child liked the book, And then we invite the child to make a drawing about the story. This journal can be used for kids as young as in Pre-K, to older - it will depend on the current development level of the child, and on the books that you select. (We created it with Pre-K to 2nd grade in mind, but it might work for even older kids). Key Benefits of this journal: This journal will be a great reading practice and on top of that will help improve: Reading Comprehension, Fine Motor skills (Drawing and Writing skills), And the child''s understanding about the world, about emotions and much more - based on your books selection, too. As a bonus, we included in this journal: - a list of Summer Activities for the kids to try out, - a Certificate of Achievement for completing the 25 book challenge, - and two lists: the top 10 books read this summer, and a list of future books that you would like to read. Finally, there are pages in the end for the caregiver or teacher to write down notes about observations and/or relevant ideas that you may have during your reading sessions with the little ones. It will be a great challenge, a beautiful journey... let''s get started! Ps1. This journal is offered in Black & White and Color versions - the content is the same. You are on the Black & White version page now (the cover will be colored and the interior of the journal will be print in B&W). If you''d like to purchase the Color version (print in color inside), please just click on "A Day to Remember" (our author page on Amazon) and find the Color version with the exact same cover.
