Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive, encyclopaedic work devoted exclusively to every Jewish contributor, large and small, to Major League Baseball. Its packed with: Rare photographs of players on and off the field; Full player statistics; Rare memorabilia; Exclusive original interviews. Jews who impacted upon the Great American Pastime extend far beyond the record strikeouts and round trippers of the legendary Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg. And there are scores of ballplayers like Lipman Pike, Shawn Green, Cal Abrams and Eddie Zosky whose little-known Baseball stories will touch or amuse readers of any background. Beyond life-time batting averages, there are intriguing players like catcher Moe Berg who served his country as a secret agent during WWII. While the tragic life of Bruce Gardner may bring tears to readers eyes, the exploits of 'Clown Princes' Al Schact and Max Patkin will have fans rolling with laughter. Nowhere else will one read tributes to great Jewish baseball executives and owners whose vision built some of historys most successful teams. Al Rosen may have gone from the All-Star team to the front-office Hall of Fame, but some of the most famous self-made success stories of this century honed their competitive spirit on the stickball courts of Jewish ghettos. This one-of-a-kind book will be much-in-demand by both baseball and Judaica book buyers.

Download or read book McKinsey s Marvin Bower written by Elizabeth Haas Edersheim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-12-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I had the privilege of working closely with Marvin and McKinsey for many years. This book makes Marvin come to life and perpetuates him as a role model." -Peter F. Drucker "A wonderful book about a wonderful man. In many ways, Marvin's McKinsey framed the hypotheses in our own search for excellence-for example, passion for values, belief in people as the prime resource, and willingness to let people experiment. As well as I thought I knew Marvin, however, this remarkable book, drawing on the collective memories of those who worked most closely with him, taught me a ton about how extraordinary the man really was and what made him that way. Many have called Drucker the man who invented management; I think history will conclude that both he and Marvin Bower share that pedestal." -Bob Waterman, coauthor of In Search of Excellence "Marvin Bower became a legend, not just within McKinsey & Company, but within professional services and the business world more broadly. In everything he did and said, he embodied the professional approach and the importance of values. This book sheds remarkable insight on a remarkable man and on the power of constancy of purpose." -Ian Davis, Worldwide Managing Director, McKinsey & Co. "It is as Marvin would have wanted it-simple, honest, fact-based, wonderful stories with a long-term perspective. An insightful read about the father of management consulting." -Lois Juliber, retired COO, Colgate-Palmolive "This book provides fascinating insight into the early days of modern management consulting. It is an extremely enlightening look at the origin of one of America's most important professions and one of America's most innovative leaders." -Thomas H. Lee, founder, Chairman, and President, Thomas H. Lee Partners L.P.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first ten to fifteen years part of the book was about that part of Marvin's life where he had to learn about befriending other people. Before, it was just Marvin and his older sister, who was boss. His new life as a new boy in town was then taking place. His future was determined by how he looked at the past. To make friends and be respected Marvin always stuck by telling no lies and always sticking with the truth. In his later years, he went to work at a silver mine called the Sunshine Mine. As he became a maintenance electrician, and had to cover the whole mine. He'd been in places and seen things that most people would have nightmares about. He was in the area where the fire started on the night shift before it happened and saw what started it that killed ninety-one men. One of the most intelligent men Marvin ever met was an officer in the SEAL Team in the US Navy. His name was Mark Shaw and he was also his neighbor. After Marvin was befriended by Mark, he was asked to do some work for him. For about twenty years, Marvin did numerous jobs for Mark: some he is at liberty to write about, but others were confidential government jobs. Mark and his Navy SEAL friends taught Marvin how to become a diver and what to do and what not to do in the water. Most of his work was underwater. Water where you could only see about six inches with a good flashlight, and the water temperature never got over 50 degrees. They made equipment for all the SEAL teams and tested and designed them other equipment. Marvin said being able to talk and work with ex-SEALs was one of the most impressive jobs he have ever had. Mark Shaw died at the age of sixty-four.

Download or read book Lee Marvin written by Dwayne Epstein and published by Schaffner Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length, authoritative, and detailed story of the iconic actor's life to go beyond the Hollywood scandal-sheet reporting of earlier books, this account offers an appreciation for the man and his acting career and the classic films he starred in, painting a portrait of an individual who took great risks in his acting and career. Although Lee Marvin is best known for his icy tough guy roles—such as his chilling titular villain in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or the paternal yet brutally realistic platoon leader in The Big Red One—very little is known of his personal life; his family background; his experiences in WWII; his relationship with his father, family, friends, wives; and his ongoing battles with alcoholism, rage, and depression, occasioned by his postwar PTSD. Now, after years of research, interviews with family members, friends and colleagues, and complete with rare photographs and illustrative material, Hollywood writer Dwayne Epstein provides a full understanding and appreciation of this acting titan’s place in the Hollywood pantheon in spite of his very real and human struggles.
Download or read book Malice written by Liam Llewellyn and published by L.L. Press. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marvin Heemeyer was a blue-collar man whose greatest joy in life was to see his muffler-repair shop prosper. When he felt the government of Granby, Colorado, was conspiring against him and the success of his business, he decided to take action. He did not take his vengeance by walking into the town hall with a gun. Nor did he build bombs and deliver them to local politicians. No, Marvin was more ingenious than that. He put his welding skills to work. In so doing, Marvin Heemeyer made history as one of the most original, complex, controversial, and misunderstood criminals in history. Malice is the story of his life leading up to his one-of-a-kind crime. Exhaustively researched, author Liam Llewellyn portrays the story in its entirety, then poses an alternative interpretation. Malice challenges the reader to ask such questions as: Do governments conspire against individuals? In the wake of enormous tragedy, do governments tell the truth? What is a criminal? Do two wrongs make a right?
