This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer in Northern Michigan The other hotels are the John Jacob Astor House, Island House, Mission House, The New Mackinac, The New Murray, Lake View, Palmer House, Grand Central, etc. As a health resort this Island cannot be sur passed, and the testimony of every one who has visited it is unanimous in its praise. Dr. Wm. A. Hammond has written of its merits, and Lieut. Greeley, the Arctic hero, in an article published in Scribner's Magazine, entitled Where Shall We Spend the Summer? Names Mackinac as pre-eminent in possessing the cool, dry, bracing air necessary to health. Across the Straits and about five miles northwest of Mackinac Island is st. Ignace. It is a very old town, having been first settled in 1671. It is the terminus of a division of the Duluth, South Shore Atlantic Railroad, by means of which all points may be reached in the Upper Peninsula. Th'e Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior, a little off from this road, are well worth visiting, the scenery being especially grand and full of interest. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camps and Tramps in the Adirondacks, and Grayling Fishing in Northern Michigan: A Record of Summer Vacations in the Wilderness The incidents recorded in the following pages have been neither invented nor exaggerated to any appreciable de gree. I have written in the belief that the actual doings of real personages, always and everywhere, have an interest of themselves quite independent of the manner of the tell ing, if the telling be truthful. So much I meant to be sure of at all hazards. What we said, also, is perhaps as veraciously set forth as the average interviewer reports his unwilling victim.' I have endeavored, indeed to give to the reader truthful pictures of the actual summer vacation life in the Adirondacks, to refresh the recollection of those who have camped and tramped where we did, and to bring back somewhat of their enjoyment of the lakes and moun tains and streams; and also to give to others who may read these records a reasonable, vivid and fair impression of the wilderness and the experiences of summer life there. The chapters on Grayling Fishing have been added, as having at least a cousinly relationship to the general sub jcet of the book. Book Mackinac the Wonderful Isle Petoskey Traverse City and Other Northern Michigan Summer Resorts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mackinac the Wonderful Isle Petoskey Traverse City and Other Northern Michigan Summer Resorts Classic Reprint written by Grand Rapids and Indiana Railro Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mackinac, the Wonderful Isle, Petoskey, Traverse City and Other Northern Michigan Summer Resorts Inac island, fanned by the breezes and laved by the waters of the three greatest lakes of America - Superior, Michigan and Huron has the most equable, exhilarating and delightful climate of any spot in the north temperate zone. The island, situated at the confluence of the great lakes med, is about nine miles in circumference. Containing a little less than three thousand acres. Of this area one hundred and three acres are used for a military reserva tion, somewhat more is private property, and the remain der the United States, with a proper appreciation of its many attractions, has reserved for a National Park. The Wonderful Island, surrounded by the blue-green waters which separate the two pen insulas composing the State of Michigan, has all the beauties and advan tages of an ideal summer resort. This has been known for centuries, for the aboriginal inhabitants of the Peninsular State, and indeed the entire West, regarded the island as the especial home of the Great Spirit. It was as near an approximation to heaven as the Indian had ever realized. So imagery and metaphor have been exhausted in the vain attempt to describe its glories. It has been named The Wonderful Isle, The Queen of Enchantment, The Tourists' Paradise, Gem of the Straits, The Fairy Isle - indeed, it has almost as many pet names as it has had visitors, and their number is legion. The island, at its highest point, rises some three hundred feet above the waters of the Straits of Mackinac, hence, to craft, passing through that Gateway of the West, it is one of the most conspicuous objects in the horizon for a long distance. Indeed, it may be properly termed Nature's Statue of Liberty, watching the wealth and products of the great North west as they pass on their way to the sea-coast, for our own people or for other nations. Download or read book My New Home in Northern Michigan written by Charles W. Jay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My New Home in Northern Michigan: And Other Tales HE average reader of those kind of books that are mainly founded on the personality of the writer, are apt to be curiously inclined to know something of the private history of the one who thus ventures publicly before them as a claimant to their favorable consideration. There is generally a feeling of sympathy with such reader toward such author, which strengthens with the progress of perusal, until it ripens into the desire of a more minute knowledge of the outer and inner life of him who has so interested them. Knowing that this little book, the child of my later years, will be kindly received and welcomed by a large number of men, and a far greater number of women - the latter always permitting the flood of sympathy, in which eddies the worth less driftwood of sentiment, to overflow the shallower depths of the brain - I proceed at once to unlock myself to all such as may be under the suggestions of curiosity, or the promptings of interest, for a glance or a stare at the elephant, as he swings his inky trunk through the coming pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Michigan is a place, like all places, in change. Over the past half century, its landscape has been bulldozed, subdivided, and built upon. Climate change warms the water of the Great Lakes at an alarming rate—Lake Superior is now the fastest-warming large body of freshwater on the planet—creating increasingly frequent and severe storm events, altering aquatic and shoreline ecosystems, and contributing to further invasions by non-native plants and animals. And yet the essence of this region, known to many as simply “Up North,” has proved remarkably perennial. Millions of acres of state and national forests and other public lands remain intact. Small towns peppered across the rural countryside have changed little over the decades, pushing back the machinery of progress with the help of dedicated land conservancies, conservation organizations, and other advocacy groups. Up North in Michigan, the new collection from celebrated nature writer Jerry Dennis, captures its author’s lifelong journey to better know this place he calls home by exploring it in every season, in every kind of weather, on foot, on bicycle, in canoes and cars. The essays in this book are more than an homage to a particular region, its people, and its natural wonders. They are a reflection on the Up North that can only be experienced through your feet and fingertips, through your ears, mouth, and nose—the Up North that makes its way into your bones as surely as sand makes its way into wood grain.

Book Material for Geography of Michigan Classic Reprint

Download or read book Material for Geography of Michigan Classic Reprint written by Mark Sylvester William Jefferson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Material for Geography of Michigan The chief material offered is the series of diagrams, to which much atten tion may be given. The text serves mainly to interpret them and aids to picture conditions prevailing over wide areas. Any teacher should go to the diagrams for the facts of the home locality in which she teaches; to the relief map for her height above sea level and the character of the surface of her neighborhood; to the map of extent of Michigan for other illustrative exer cises of the same sort in other directions. The diagrams are capable of being read for any locality in the region or for all localities; how high, how smooth or rough they are, what sort of rocks or soils are probably prevalent there, how cold it is there in winter and how hot in summer, what grows there, how thickly settled, when settled. Whatever things can be shown in their rela tion to the environment gain an importance for geographic study that may not be intrinsically theirs. Very important characters of Michigan that can not be shown to be related to configuration, soil or climate have no present value from a geographic point of view. Michigan is truly a group of people and not a portion of North America, yet such is not a geographic point of view. This must concern itself with the part of the earth that Michigan occupies and in how far its life is affected by its home. If this is borne in mind, it will perhaps explain the lack of some things about the state that might be told here. In connection with the paragraphs on Physiography, students are referred to the admirable report of the state geologist for 1904, just issued, and to Taylor's Short History of the Great Lakes, in Studies in Indiana Geog raphy, Inland Publishing Co Terre Haute, Ind. Authorities for the relief map are: Frank Leverett for the lower penin sula and the country to the southeast; U. S. Relief map and Gannett diction ary of altitudes for Minnesota, Wisconsin and upper peninsula; and the Canadian dictionary of altitudes for Canada. Book excerpt: Edgar Award Finalist: The true story of a serial killer who terrorized a midwestern town in the era of free love—by the coauthor of The French Connection. In 1967, during the time of peace, free love, and hitchhiking, nineteen-year-old Mary Terese Fleszar was last seen alive walking home to her apartment in Ypsilanti, Michigan. One month later, her naked body—stabbed over thirty times and missing both feet and a forearm—was discovered, partially buried, on an abandoned farm. A year later, the body of twenty-year-old Joan Schell was found, similarly violated. Southeastern Michigan was terrorized by something it had never experienced before: a serial killer. Over the next two years, five more bodies were uncovered around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan. All the victims were tortured and mutilated. All were female students. After multiple failed investigations, a chance sighting finally led to a suspect. On the surface, John Norman Collins was an all-American boy—a fraternity member studying elementary education at Eastern Michigan University. But Collins wasn’t all that he seemed. His female friends described him as aggressive and short tempered. And in August 1970, Collins, the “Ypsilanti Ripper,” was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole. Written by the coauthor of The French Connection, The Michigan Murders delivers a harrowing depiction of the savage murders that tormented a small midwestern town.
