Book excerpt: Summary of International Energy Research and Development Activities 1974–1976 is a directory of energy research and development projects conducted in various countries such as Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom between 1974 and 1976. A limited number of projects sponsored by international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency are also included. This directory consists of nine chapters and opens with a section on organic sources of energy such as coal, oil and gas, peat, hydrocarbons, and non-fossil organic sources. The next sections focus on thermonuclear energy and plasma physics; fission sources and energy production; geophysical energy sources; conversion technology; and environmental aspects of energy conversion and use. Energy transport, transmission, utilization, and conservation are also covered. The final chapter deals with energy systems and other energy-related research on subjects ranging from car sharing and urban passenger transport to nuclear power plants, energy supply and demand models, and high-power molecular lasers. This monograph will be a valuable resource of information for those involved in energy research and development.

Download or read book The Energy Question Volume Two written by Edward W. Erickson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1974-12-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called energy crisis that burst upon the world in 1973 was not easily understood by many people. It was neither 'the beginning of the end' nor the first encounter by modern man with the natural result of his prodigality. These papers, collected in two volumes, from energy economists in the United States, Canada, and Britain all indicate that the 'crisis' was and is a short-run problem caused by government action or inaction. The problem may be complex, but it was mishandled, particularly by the United States, in terms of government policy. The rise in the price of, and the embargo on, oil came into being because of a successful producers' cartel outside North America; oil buyers - nations and companies - did not respond in kind but scurried around the world in separate planes in order to ensure supplies for themselves at any price. That price became many times the cost-of-production price, despite the fact that cool analysis reveals an increase in both production and reserves in most areas of the world. The shortage of refined oil products for consumers are attributable partly to the embargo, but also to a shortage of refineries and bottlenecks in transportation - some of which have been induced by government uncertainties over recent years. Proper government policies are now required. The thirty-six papers in the two books treat a multitude of topics related to the question of energy as seen from the stance of the economist. All sources of energy are considered, as are the markets in major areas of the world; past policies are analysed, and future policies recommended. It is hoped that the volumes, giving the background to the energy problems of the immediate future and a menu of prescriptions for their solution, will interest businessmen, market analysts, and policy-makers as well as economists, teaching or learning, in many parts of the world.
Download or read book Impact Assessment written by David P. Lawrence and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers solutions and best practices to respond to recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in the field Since the publication of the first edition of Environmental Impact Assessment in 2003, both the practice and theory of impact assessment have changed substantially. Not only has the field been subject to a great deal of new regulations and guidelines, it has also evolved tremendously, with a greater emphasis on strategic environmental, sustainability, and human health impact assessments. Moreover, there is a greater call for impact assessments from a global perspective. This Second Edition, now titled Impact Assessment to reflect its broader scope and the breadth of these many changes, offers students and practitioners a current guide to today's impact assessment practice. Impact Assessment begins with an introduction and then a chapter reviewing conventional approaches to the field. Next, the book is organized around recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in impact assessment process design and management, enabling readers to quickly find the material they need to solve tough problems, including: How to make impact assessments more influential, rigorous, rational, substantive, practical, democratic, collaborative, ethical, and adaptive How each problem and challenge-reducing process would operate at the regulatory and applied levels How each problem can be approached for different impact assessment types—sustainability assessment, strategic environmental assessment, project-level EIA, social impact assessment, ecological impact assessment, and health impact assessment How to link and combine impact assessment processes to operate in situations with multiple overlapping problems, challenges, and impact assessment types How to connect and combine impact assessment processes Each chapter first addresses the topic with current theory and then demonstrates how that theory is applied, presenting requirements, guidelines, and best practices. Summaries at the end of each chapter provide a handy tool for structuring the design and evaluation of impact assessment processes and documents. Readers will find analyses and new case studies that address such issues as multi-jurisdictional impact assessment, climate change, cumulative effects assessment, follow-up, capacity building, interpreting significance, and the siting of major industrial and waste facilities. Reflecting current theory and standards of practice, Impact Assessment is appropriate for both students and practitioners in the field, enabling them to confidently respond to a myriad of new challenges in the field.

Download or read book Social Impact Analysis And Development Planning In The Third World written by William Derman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although national governments and international agencies have committed vast sums of money to development, many projects have not only failed to improve the lives of the poor but in some cases have created additional social and economic problems. Such failures can often be traced to an inadequate understanding of the socio-cultural reality of the people most directly affected and to a lack of their participation in project planning, implementation, and evaluation. In this collection of essays, scholars and practitioners from diverse disciplines examine many of the perplexing social issues of development planning from the perspective of social impact analysis. Drawing on national, regional, and local case studies, the authors demonstrate why sociocultural factors are seldom adequately understood and discuss how they can be effectively incorporated into the planning process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, Energy provides a comprehensive bibliography of energy in the context of the social sciences. The book argues that energy problems are best seen in the context of social phenomena, such as social attitudes, social behaviours, social institutions and structures and populations. The authors argue that to examine energy problems outside of the context of social factors is to lack a full and detailed examination of the subject. The bibliography provides a comprehensive collection of sources from a range of areas in the social sciences on the subject of energy.

Book excerpt: Sectoral increases in GDP/GSP and employment are the result of the indirect influence of the AHP and the MVP on sectors other than oil and gas facility construction, natural gas pipeline transportation, and oil and gas production. [...] However, it is uncertain which option for the connection between the MVP and the existing Alberta pipeline system will be chosen: extending the Alberta system to the NWT boundary or constructing the Alberta segment of the MVP down to the Alberta terminus. [...] The Government of the Northwest Territories and TransCanada PipeLines Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding in July 1999 identifying "an alignment of interests and a mutual desire to encourage the timely development of the natural gas reserves of the NWT and the construction of an economic, competitively priced, natural gas transmission infrastructure."11 The Mackenzie Delta producers, who [...] APG represents the interests of aboriginal groups of the NWT in the Mackenzie Gas Project and has a share in the MVP.
