Book Thirty Fifth Session of the Sub Commission of Protection of Minorities

Download or read book Thirty Fifth Session of the Sub Commission of Protection of Minorities written by Constance de la Vega and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article provides a brief synopsis of the 35th Session of the Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, which took place in Geneva, August 16 - September 10, 1982. At the 35th Session there were advances in several areas, particularly regarding the setting of international standards and the improvement of information-gathering procedures. Also promising for the promotion and protection of human rights was that the Working Group on Indigenous Peoples were allowed to present information to the Sub-Commission. At the same time, several dangerous precedents were set which appeared to make it more difficult for non-governmental organizations to play a role in the work of the Sub-Commission. Additionally, the Sub-Commission appeared weak in addressing violations of human rights by specific countries.

Book Human Rights at the UN

Download or read book Human Rights at the UN written by Roger Normand and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights activists Roger Normand and Sarah Zaidi provide a broad political history of the emergence and development of the human rights movement in the 20th century through the crucible of the United Nations, focusing on the hopes and expectations, concrete power struggles, national rivalries, and bureaucratic politics that molded the international system of human rights law. The book emphasizes the period before and after the creation of the UN, when human rights ideas and proposals were shaped and transformed by the hard-edged realities of power politics and bureaucratic imperatives. It also analyzes the expansion of the human rights framework in response to demands for equitable development after decolonization and organized efforts by women, minorities, and other disadvantaged groups to secure international recognition of their rights.
