When engineers receive some ideas in new product development, they can test how the new design looks by bui- ing scale models and they can get an actual feeling with the prototype through their imagination. Professor Emori often said: “When children play with a toy airplane, their mind is wondering about the prototype airplane which they haven’t ridden. ” Children can use the scale model airplane as a means to enter into an imagi- tive world of wonder by testing in their own way how the actual airplane might function, how the actual airplane can maneuver aerodynamically, what might be the actual sound of a jet engine, how to safely land the actual airplane, and so on. This imagination that scale models can provide for children will help them later develop professional intuition. Physical scale models can never be entirely succe- fully replaced by computer screens where virtual models are displayed and fancy functions are demonstrated. Not only children but also adults can learn things by actually touching things only offered by physical models, helping all of us develop imagination and feeling eventually leading toward Kufu. Einstein’s famous “thought experiments [11],” which helped him to restructure modern physics may possibly and effectively be taught by letting researchers play with scale models!? References 1. I. Book excerpt: Intended to serve as a resource for the many and varied groups concerned with improving students' reading proficiencies, this report from the Nation's Report Card provides a long-term perspective on students' reading skills and strategies based on a series of five national assessments conducted from 1971 to 1988. Each chapter of the report provides a different perspective on trends in students' reading abilities. The first chapter describes changes in the average reading performance of 9-, 13-, and 17-year-olds across the five reading trend assessments conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) between 1971 and 1988. The second chapter defines levels of reading proficiency and presents the percentages of students attaining these successive levels in each assessment. The third chapter summarizes trends in students' responses to questions on their reading instruction and experiences and investigates the relationships between these background factors and reading proficiency. Overall, the findings described in the report reveal generally positive but subtle changes in reading performance at the national level since 1971: (1) nine-year-olds assessed in 1988 read significantly better than their counterparts assessed in 1971, but this progress was made in the 1970s; (2) thirteen-year-olds' reading achievement has fluctuated slightly over the years; and (3) seventeen-year-old students assessed in 1988 read significantly better than their counterparts assessed in either 1971 or 1975. 'Progress' can be employed as an organising theme across many disciplinary approaches to Zimbabwe's societal devastation. At wider levels too, the concept of progress is fitting. It underpins 'modern', 'liberal' and 'radical' perspectives of development pervading the social sciences and humanities. Yet perceptions of 'progress' are subject increasingly to intensive critical inquiry. Their gruesome end is signified in the political projects of Robert Mugabe and ZANU-PF. John Gray's Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia indicates this. It is expected that participants will engage directly in debates about how the idea of 'progress' has informed their disciplines - from political science and history to labour and agrarian studies, and then relate these arguments to the Zimbabwean case in general and their research in particular. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.
