Book Summary of John Winton s Sink the Haguro

Download or read book Summary of John Winton s Sink the Haguro written by Everest Media, and published by Everest Media LLC. This book was released on 2022-07-16T22:59:00Z with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The destroyers trailed a net behind them as they steamed southwards, leading the Japanese cruiser to believe they were retreating. When they turned north to attack, the giant ship was there. #2 The flotilla leader was attacked by the cruiser and the destroyer that were following her. The noise of the battle was intense, with men shouting and banging on each other’s shoulders to get attention. The flotilla leader was eventually saved by another destroyer. #3 The battle against the Japanese cruiser Haguro was a brilliant, but very risky, operation. It could not have taken place if the C-in-C’s initial orders had been obeyed, and it could never have been successful but for Japanese negligence. #4 The story of the battle of the Java Sea lived on in the memories of the Royal Navy, and was taught to new generations of officers. It was never to be repeated, but it proved that nothing had been lost in the Royal Navy’s ability to fight.

Book Britain s Fleet Air Arm in World War II

Download or read book Britain s Fleet Air Arm in World War II written by Ron Mackay and published by Schiffer Pub Limited. This book was released on 2004-11-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Branch of the Royal Navy that was to carve its name into maritime history as the Fleet Air Arm faced an orphan existence up to 1937 when the Admiralty, having handed over control in 1918 to the RAF, resumed charge of its aviators. The Force was poorly equipped and dangerously short of qualified personnel with which to effectively challenge its Axis adversaries, and suffered accordingly in the initial stages of World War II. The provision of superior carrier aircraft designs (primarily from the U.S. Grumman and Chance-Vought companies), and a similar whole-sale expansion in Fleet and Escort carriers (most of the latter supplied from American shipyards), as well as the personnel with which to operate the warships and aircraft ensured that by 1943 the Fleet Air Arm was an all-round, efficient Force capable of independent combat operations in all the major War Zones right up to VJ-Day.

Meticulously researched and well written, The Rescue ties these elements together into an epic that is emotionally engaging from start to rousing finish." -Martin Russ, author of Breakout and The Last Parallel "Smith's thoroughly researched, detailed account of the brave American and Filipino guerrillas on Negros Island in the Philippines will do much to introduce readers to this little known aspect of World War II in the Pacific. . . . This is a fascinating story well told." -Elizabeth Norman, author of the award-winning We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese "The Rescue is a delightful journey with the gallant few who resisted the Japanese occupation of the Philippines and who shaped the larger events wh ich led to victory in the Pacific. Smith's brilliant research and unique storytelling make this account a must for all who enjoy history and a grand adventure." -Peter Huchthausen, author of October Fury "With a photojournalist's eye for action and detail, Steven Trent Smith's The Rescue is a remarkable achievement. Book The British Empire and the Second World War

Download or read book The British Empire and the Second World War written by Ashley Jackson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939 Hitler went to war not just with Great Britain; he also went to war with the whole of the British Empire, the greatest empire that there had ever been. In the years since 1945 that empire has disappeared, and the crucial fact that the British Empire fought together as a whole during the war has been forgotten. All the parts of the empire joined the struggle and were involved in it from the beginning, undergoing huge changes and sometimes suffering great losses as a result. The war in the desert, the defence of Malta and the Malayan campaign, and the contribution of the empire as a whole in terms of supplies, communications and troops, all reflect the strategic importance of Britain's imperial status. Men and women not only from Australia, New Zealand and India but from many parts of Africa and the Middle East all played their part. Winston Churchill saw the war throughout in imperial terms. The British Empire and the Second World War emphasises a central fact about the Second World War that is often forgotten.
