Book excerpt: The three studies discussed in the report provide a range in their base case 1990 market estimates for the SST under sonic boom restrictions from 500 to 800 airplanes. The low market estimate of 500 SST's, the FAA base case, is sufficient to enable the Government to recover all of its investment for development and construction of two prototypes plus a small return. The basic conclusion is that the program is not only economically viable but reasonably profitable to all participants over a wide range of assumptions. (Author).

In Section VI, the SST traffic potential is translated into estimates of the Free-World market for the SST in general and for U.S.-built SST's in particular in the light of the cost and profitability findings. Section VII, the final section, is an assessment of possible requirements for government support of a U.S. SST program and of the forms in which such support might be made available. Appendixes A and B provide additional background information on the aircraft market analysis and the direct operating cost analysis, respectively. Appendix C is a summarization of the findings of the Air Passenger Survey conducted by the Institute. (Author).
