Download or read book A Hidden Place of Worship written by Tony Bostock and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Hidden Place of Worship traces the history of the parish church of St. Chad's, Over, Winsford, Cheshire, a very ancient place of worship - perhaps stretching back millennia. It is not easily located being in a secluded valley among the fields, some distance from the main road. This book charts the history of the church and the parish it serves since the earliest times through to the mid-twentieth century. The work is based on original research and puts forward an interesting hypothesis concerning the development of the area in the medieval times. This is not an architectural study of the church, though there is some mention of developments in the building styles of the church, rather it is an account of its place in the landscape, in the politics of medieval Cheshire, and how it served the needs of the community. There is much to interest family historians with names of many local families appearing in the text and in an appendix with extracts from the Church Wardens Accounts.

Book Our Family Affairs 1867 1896 Esprios Classics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 - 29 February 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer. Benson's first book published was Sketches From Marlborough. He started his novel writing career with the (then) fashionably controversial Dodo (1893), which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, which featured a scathing description of composer and militant suffragette Ethel Smyth (which she "gleefully acknowledged", according to actress Prunella Scales), with the same cast of characters a generation later: Dodo the Second (1914), "a unique chronicle of the pre-1914 Bright Young Things" and Dodo Wonders (1921), "a first-hand social history of the Great War in Mayfair and the Shires".

Book Dear Miss Nightingale

Download or read book Dear Miss Nightingale written by Benjamin Jowett and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Florence Nightingale returned from the Crimean War, broken in health and requiring seclusion, she was befriended and attended to by prominent Oxford scholar Benjamin Jowett. Dear Miss Nightingale collects for the first time in a single volume his correspondence to her, in which he offered constant encouragement and kept her in touch with the trends of the times and the social movements of London drawing rooms. More than a sensitive testament of an enduring friendship between two eminent Victorians, these letters offer insight into the subtleties of the social life of the period.

Book excerpt: The case for a bigger, more complete picture of reality in which a fifth, spiritual dimension plays a central role Many of us today are all too willing to accept a humanist and scientific account of the universe which considers human existence as a fleeting accident. The triumph of John Hick’s gripping work is his exposure of the radical insufficiency of this view. Drawing on mystical and religious traditions ancient and modern, and spiritual thinkers as diverse as Julian of Norwich and Mahatma Ghandi, he has produced a tightly argued and thoroughly readable case for a bigger, more complete, picture of reality in which a fifth, spiritual dimension, plays a central role. ‘Essential reading for anyone concerned with spirituality in the modern world’ Professor Keith Ward, University of Oxford Erudite, provocative and deeply moving, Hick’s persuasive narrative will prompt all curious readers to re-examine their own spiritual horizons.‘This stimulating book opens up many fundamental issues that must concern everyone. It deserves to be widely read. ‘ Expository Times ‘Learned, lucid and engaging, easy to read and easy to applaud for its sheer clarity of style and its breadth of interest, even when one disagrees with it!’ Anvil

Book The Victorians and Ancient Rome

Download or read book The Victorians and Ancient Rome written by Norman Vance and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1997-04-21 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE VICTORIANS & ANCIENT ROME Norman Vance has written the first full-length study of the impact on Victorian Britain of the history and literature of ancient Rome. His comprehensive account shows how not only scholars and poets but also engineers, soldiers, scientists and politicians gained inspiration from the writing, theory and practice of their Roman predecessors. The Roman theme is traced in nineteenth-century painting and music as well as literature and political discussion. There are chapters on the imaginative influence throughout the nineteenth century of five major Roman poets, framed by other chapters on Rome and European revolutions, nineteenth-century versions of Roman history, fictions of Rome, imperialism and decadence. Attention is also paid to the influence of developments in archaeology both at Rome and Pompeii and at Romano-British sites. Professor Vance provides a fascinating account of the sense of connection Victorian Britain felt with the Roman experience, a connection made the more complex because Britain had once been a Roman colony and because Christianity took hold and spread under the Roman Empire.
