Book excerpt: "A pioneering publication which deals with the most famous series - the Seishu gishi den (1847-48) and its sequel the Seishu gishin den (1848) - of the forty-seven masterless samurai (ronin) by artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). The true 18th-century tale of revenge by forty-seven ronin for the death of their lord was enormously popular in Japan: it was dramatised for the Kabuki theatre and its heroes were often depicted in ukiyo-e prints." "Kuniyoshi was a master in the genre of warrior prints, and his series expressively portrays these warrior 'folk heroes'." "Dr. Weinberg's book also includes translations of the texts which appear on the prints and which recount each hero's exploits. In addition, there are photographs of the relics of the masterless samurai and the ruins of their castle in Ako."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: "_Of brigands and bravery: Kuniyoshi's heroes of the Suikoden_ is the first monograph in English on the stunning series of 74 prints illustrating figures from the Suikoden by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), one of the outstanding Japaese woodblock-print masters of the 19th century. [This monograph] reproduces the 74 known designs of the series in full colour; each is accompanied by an explanatory text. The publication also offers supplementary information on topics relating specifically to the series such as tattooing: a number of the Suikoden figures are adorned with tattoos and it is thought that Kuniyoshi himself had a passion for this art. In addition, Kuniyoshi's illustration of a variety of armour and dress types, his at times graphic portrayal of heroes in battle and his integration of Western stylistic devices are testimony to the creative genius behind the Suikoden series."--from publisher

Book excerpt: This sumptuously produced monograph showcases the work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the last great Japanese masters of ukiyo-e prints, illustrations, and paintings. Best known for his depictions of fierce samurai warriors in battle, Utagawa Kuniyoshi also produced landscapes, portraits of Kabuki actors, and images of mythical animals. His dynamic action scenes and fantastic creatures are recognized today as precursors of manga and anime. This dazzling volume by Matthi Forrer, one of the leading experts on ukiyo-e art, traces Kuniyoshi's entire career. Chapters look at the major aspects of Kuniyoshi's oeuvre; his book illustrations and portraits of fashionable women; his enormously popular series featuring actors, warriors, and landscapes; and the influence of Western art on his career. Meticulous, large-scale reproductions highlight the work's clear outlines, elegantly muted palette, and precise details--from electrifying depictions of a tiger, mid-pounce, and light-hearted interpretations of Chinese folktales, to the terrifying figures of samurai swordsmen and romantic winter landscapes. A Japanese-style binding and box complete this luxurious package that promises an endlessly absorbing journey into the life of Kuniyoshi during the latter days of Japan's Edo period.

Book excerpt: This handsome volume explores the life and work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), one of Japan's greatest print artists. Alongside such illustrious names as Hokusai and Hiroshige, he dominated the 19th-century production of the popular genre of woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e, literally, "pictures of the floating world." The only major book to illustrate the entirety of the artist's work, Kuniyoshi explores his extraordinary imagination across an impressive range of subject matter, from his portraits of Japanese warrior heroes and fashionable beauties to his satirical themes and innovative landscape prints. Published to accompany a spectacular exhibition, Kuniyoshi is an essential reference for Japanese art collectors and enthusiasts.

Book Kuniyoshi Kunisada

Download or read book Kuniyoshi Kunisada written by Sarah Elizabeth Thompson and published by Museum of Fine Arts Boston. This book was released on 2017 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the rivalry between Kuniyoshi and Kunisada, two of the most popular Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print artists of the nineteenth century, based on masterworks from the peerless Japanese art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Rival ukiyo-e masters Kuniyoshi and Kunisada were the two most admired designers of figure prints in nineteenth-century Japan. Famous for the realism of his portraits of Kabuki actors, the sensuality of his beautiful women and the luxurious settings he imagined for historical scenes, Kunisada was the popular favourite during his lifetime. Kuniyoshi is loved by connoisseurs and collectors today for his dynamic action scenes of warriors and monsters (which foreshadowed present-day manga and anime), his comic prints, and even a few especially daring works that included forbidden political satire in disguise. With scores of illustrations in glorious full colour, this beautifully produced volume presents Kuniyoshi and Kunisada's artistic rivalry through a selection of outstanding works from the unparalleled Japanese art collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Readers are invited to decide for themselves which of the two is their personal favourite.

Download or read book Utagawa Kuniyoshi written by Sarah Elizabeth Thompson and published by Pomegranate Communications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1852 and 1853, The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaid? is a richly entertaining series of woodblock prints created by master artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797-1861). The seventy-two finely executed prints include one for each resting point along the well-traveled Kisokaid? (Kiso Road)-a historic route stretching from Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto-plus views of the two endpoint cities and an additional series title page. Kuniyoshi never traveled the mountainous Kisokaid?, but he drew from historic events, kabuki plays, popular legends, and classical literature to illustrate his vision of the towns and stations along the road. This stunning collection of colorful ukiyo-e prints exhibits Kuniyoshi's artistic mastery and clever sense of humor. Each work incorporates three elements: the main picture, an inset landscape depicting the particular station, and a title block. Using parody and pun (both for humor and to avoid government censorship), Kuniyoshi associated each point on the route with one of the most beloved stories of his day-from a reimagined Odyssey to the Japanese fairy tale of Urashima to popular kabuki scenes with courtesans and other "floating world" characters. He made that story the subject of the main picture and put clues to its identity in the title block. Kuniyoshi delighted in these hidden messages and used every inch of the paper to tell his story. Utagawa Kuniyoshi: The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaid? celebrates the beauty, charm, and ingenuity of Kuniyoshi's work with more than seventy-five full-color illustrations, including reproductions of all the prints in the treasured series. Sarah E. Thompson provides an introductory essay on the history of ukiyo-e and a description of each print. Sarah E. Thompson, Assistant Curator for Japanese Prints at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, received her PhD from Columbia University. She taught Japanese and Asian art history at Vassar College, Oberlin College, and the University of Oregon and curated several exhibitions of Japanese prints before coming to the MFA in 2004. She is now supervising the Japanese Print Access and Documentation Project, whose ultimate goal is to photograph and catalogue all fifty thousand Japanese prints in the MFA collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Taiheiki, a 14th-century war epic presenting scenes from the Nanboku-cho period (1334-1392), is one of the key works of early Japanese literature. The book was first popularized in Japanese art by musha-e (“warrior picture”) prints during the 19th century, in particular by Kuniyoshi’s series Taiheiki Eiyu-den ("Taiheiki Heroes") of 1847-49, and Yoshiiku’s imitative but expanded series Taiheiki Eiyu-den of 1867-69. Both series depicted a range of samurai in battle, with kinetic framing and numerous images of bloody carnage. Yoshiiku in particular took this aspect to an extreme, with severed heads and blood liberally strewn about his designs. This special ebook selection of Taiheiki Warriors includes 25 of the most vivid and dynamic designs from each series, making a total of 50 classic warrior prints by Kuniyoshi and Yoshiiku, two of the most renowned and accomplished of all ukiyo-e artists.
