Book Statistical Inference via Data Science A ModernDive into R and the Tidyverse

Download or read book Statistical Inference via Data Science A ModernDive into R and the Tidyverse written by Chester Ismay and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Inference via Data Science: A ModernDive into R and the Tidyverse provides a pathway for learning about statistical inference using data science tools widely used in industry, academia, and government. It introduces the tidyverse suite of R packages, including the ggplot2 package for data visualization, and the dplyr package for data wrangling. After equipping readers with just enough of these data science tools to perform effective exploratory data analyses, the book covers traditional introductory statistics topics like confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and multiple regression modeling, while focusing on visualization throughout. Features: ● Assumes minimal prerequisites, notably, no prior calculus nor coding experience ● Motivates theory using real-world data, including all domestic flights leaving New York City in 2013, the Gapminder project, and the data journalism website, FiveThirtyEight.com ● Centers on simulation-based approaches to statistical inference rather than mathematical formulas ● Uses the infer package for "tidy" and transparent statistical inference to construct confidence intervals and conduct hypothesis tests via the bootstrap and permutation methods ● Provides all code and output embedded directly in the text; also available in the online version at moderndive.com This book is intended for individuals who would like to simultaneously start developing their data science toolbox and start learning about the inferential and modeling tools used in much of modern-day research. The book can be used in methods and data science courses and first courses in statistics, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Book Testing Lecture Comprehension Through Listening to summarize Cloze Tasks

Download or read book Testing Lecture Comprehension Through Listening to summarize Cloze Tasks written by Haiping Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the effectiveness of listen-to-summarize tasks as a tool to assess lecture comprehension ability. It especially focuses on listen-to-summarize tasks that represent listeners’ meaning building and the discourse construction of the lecture for listening assessment purposes. It discusses in depth the nature of lecture comprehension and introduces the approaches to assessing it. It also presents teachers’ and students’ perceptions of listen-to-summarize task demands and their respective implications. By observing interactions between test-takers’ cognitive processes and the task itself, the book explores the effectiveness of these tasks. It also examines the discrepancy in cognitive processes between different language competence levels in detail, shedding light upon current research on lecture comprehension assessment and offering insights into listening comprehension instruction.

Book Bayesian Analysis of Infectious Diseases

Download or read book Bayesian Analysis of Infectious Diseases written by Lyle D. Broemeling and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bayesian Analysis of Infectious Diseases -COVID-19 and Beyond shows how the Bayesian approach can be used to analyze the evolutionary behavior of infectious diseases, including the coronavirus pandemic. The book describes the foundation of Bayesian statistics while explicating the biology and evolutionary behavior of infectious diseases, including viral and bacterial manifestations of the contagion. The book discusses the application of Markov Chains to contagious diseases, previews data analysis models, the epidemic threshold theorem, and basic properties of the infection process. Also described are the chain binomial model for the evolution of epidemics. Features: Represents the first book on infectious disease from a Bayesian perspective. Employs WinBUGS and R to generate observations that follow the course of contagious maladies. Includes discussion of the coronavirus pandemic as well as many examples from the past, including the flu epidemic of 1918-1919. Compares standard non-Bayesian and Bayesian inferences. Offers a companion website with the R and WinBUGS code.

Book Model Selection and Inference

Download or read book Model Selection and Inference written by Kenneth P. Burnham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statisticians and applied scientists must often select a model to fit empirical data. This book discusses the philosophy and strategy of selecting such a model using the information theory approach pioneered by Hirotugu Akaike. This approach focuses critical attention on a priori modeling and the selection of a good approximating model that best represents the inference supported by the data. The book includes practical applications in biology and environmental science.

Book Information Processing and Biological Systems

Download or read book Information Processing and Biological Systems written by Samuli Niiranen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living beings require constant information processing for survival. In cells, information is being processed and propagated at various levels, from the gene regulatory network to chemical pathways, to the interaction with the environment. How this is achieved and how information is coded is still poorly understood. For example, what a cell interprets as information in the temporal level of an mRNA and what is interpreted as noise remains an open question. Recently, information theoretical methods and other tools, developed in the context of engineering and natural sciences, have been applied to study diverse biological processes. This book covers the latest findings on how information is processed in various biological processes, ranging from information processing and propagation in gene regulatory networks to information processing in natural language. An overview is presented of the state-of-the-art in information processing in biological systems and the opinion of current leaders in this research field on future research directions.
