Download or read book Photonic Switching II written by Kunio Tada and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990 International Topical Meeting on Photonic Switching was held April 12-14, 1990, in Kobe, Japan, in conjunction with the 1990 International Meet ing on Optical Computing. It was sponsored by the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers in cooperation with the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, the Optical Society of America, and the Japan So ciety of Applied Physics. The attendance was in excess of 340 persons, with 18 countries represented - a testimony to the current international interest in photonic switching. This book contains expanded and more detailed versions of most of the papers presented at the topical meeting. With the success of optical fibers there is an increased demand for a switch ing system that can operate directly on the light present in the fibers. The goal is to reduce the total number of optical-to-electrical and electrical-to-optical transformations as far as possible, in addition to exploiting the large spec tral and temporal bandwidth offered by such an optically transparent system.

Book excerpt: This book systematically discusses the nonlinearities in optics, optoelectronics and fiber communications. The theory of optical nonlinearity ties closely with the fiber communication technologies and the applied optoelectronics.

Download or read book Ultrafast Phenomena V written by Graham R. Fleming and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-23 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Optical Society of America (OSA) Topical Meeting on Picosec ond Phenomena, held at Hilton Head, South Carolina, in 1978, brought together in a congenial setting an interdisciplinary group of laser engineers and physicists who were exploring the emerging technologies for generat ing and applying picosecond optical pulses, together with scientists from the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and electronics who saw in those pulses capabilities for studying atomic and molecular phenomena on time scales previously unrealizable. The technology in this field has since developed even more rapidly and remarkably than foreseen eight years ago, and the applications to science and technology, in physics, chemistry, biology, electronics, and commu nications, have proven to be equally extraordinary. Optical pulses with pulse widths shorter than 10 femtosecond - only a few optical cycles in du ration - along with mono cycle infrared pulses, complex nonlinear optical solitons, electrooptic techniques with subpicosecond time resolutions, and a full toolkit of measurement and detection techniques have now emerged, including new methods for making ultrafast measurements in some cases even without ultrafast optical pulses. These tools are now being widely applied to study the internal motions of complex molecules and atomic lat tices, the relaxation times of superheated electrons in solids, the ultrafast dynamics of chemical reactions, the excited-state lifetimes of photosyn thetic and visual pigments, and the response times of the fastest electronic circuits yet developed.

Download or read book Terahertz Sensing Technology Electronic devices and advanced systems technology written by Dwight L. Woolard and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last research frontier in high frequency electronics now lies in the so-called THz (or submillimeter-wave) regime between the traditional microwave and infrared domains. Significant scientific and technical challenges within the terahertz (THz) frequency regime have recently motivated an array of new research activities. During the last few years, major research programs have emerged that are focused on advancing the state of the art in THz frequency electronic technology and on investigating novel applications of THz frequency sensing. This book serves as a detailed reference for the new THz frequency technological advances that are emerging across a wide spectrum of sensing and technology areas.

Download or read book Compound Semiconductors 2001 written by Y Arakawa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international perspective on recent research, Compound Semiconductors 2001 provides an overview of important developments in III-V compound semiconductors, such as GaAs, InP, and GaN; II-VI compounds, such as ZnSe and CdTe; and IV-IV compounds, such as SiC and SiGe. The book contains 139 papers arranged in chapters on electronic devices, optical devices, magnetic materials, novel systems, quantum transport, optical characterization, quantum nanostructures, and material growth and characterization. The content encompasses the development of optical and electronic devices based on nitride semiconductors as well as the steady advances in traditional topics like III-V-based electronic and optical devices, growth and processing, and characterization. The book also includes novel research trends in quantum structures, such as quantum wires and dots, and spintronics, which are very promising for future developments in nanotechnology. As the primary forum for research into these materials and their device applications, this resource is an essential reference for researchers working on compound semiconductors in semiconductor physics, device physics, materials science, chemistry, and electronic and electrical engineering.
