Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gods honored in the hymns treated in the following Thesis are Bel, Sin (Nannar), Adad (Ramman) and Tammuz, all deities of the old Babylonian pantheon, representing different phases of personality and force, conceived of as incorporated in nature and as affecting the destinies of men. These gods are severally designated in the hymns as follows: in Tablet 13963, Rev. 1, "O Bel of the mountains;" in Tablet 13930, Obv. 2, "O father Nannar;" in Tablet 29631, Obv. 10, "O Ramman, king of heaven"; and in Tablet 29628, Obv. 3, "The lord Tammuz" (CT. XV, 10, 15, 16, 17 and 19). The attributes and deeds belonging to these divinities are adduced from a wide range of literature, beginning with the royal inscriptions of the pre-dynastic periods and ending with the inscriptions of the monarchs of the later Babylonian empire. In fact, the building inscriptions of the Babylonians, the war inscriptions of the Assyrians, the legendary literature, the incantations, as well as the religious collections, particularly the hymns, afford us many descriptions, of greater or less length, of all the Babylonian gods.

Book Princess Priestess Poet

Download or read book Princess Priestess Poet written by Enheduanna and published by . This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in 2300 BCE, Sumerian high priestess Enheduanna became the first author of historical record by signing her name to a collection of hymns written for forty-two temples throughout the southern half of ancient Mesopotamia, the civilization now known as Sumer. Each of her hymns confirmed to the worshipers in each city the patron deity's unique character and significance. The collected hymns became part of the literary canon of the remarkable Sumerian culture and were copied by scribes in the temples for hundreds of years after Enheduanna's death. Betty De Shong Meador offers here the first collection of original translations of all forty-two hymns along with a lengthy examination of the relevant deity and city, as well as an analysis of the verses themselves. She introduces the volume with discussions of Sumerian history and mythology, as well as with what is known about Enheduanna, thought to be the first high priestess to the moon god Nanna, and daughter of Sargon, founder of one of the first empires in human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new standard editions of all the hitherto known hymns of Urnamma, the founder of the Third Dynasty of Ur (fl. 2100 B.C.), and adds new perspectives to the composition and development of the genre of Sumerian royal hymns in general. The first chapter is introductory in nature. The second chapter presents a general survey of Urnamma's hymnic corpus. The third chapter deals with correlations of Urnamma's hymns with other textual sources pertaining to him. A fourth chapter is devoted to aspects of continuity and change in royal hymnography by analysing the Urnamma hymns in relation to other royal hymns and related genres. Chapter 5 presents editions of Urnamma hymns,

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sumerian Hymns: From Cuneiform d104s in the British Museum, Transliteration, Translation and Commentary The so-called "Sumerian Question" as to the genuine linguistic character of the ancient Non-Semitic Babylonian texts has agitated the Assyriological world for more than twenty years. The new Sumerian matter from the monuments which is constantly coming to hand demands, in the interest of all those who can look upon this discussion with impartial eyes, a most rigid and unprejudiced examination. Dr. Vanderburgh in the following monograph has adhered to the views expounded in my "Materials for a Sumerian Lexicon "(J. C. Hinrichs'sche Buchhandlung, 1905 - 1907), that the so-called Sumerian was originally a Non-Semitic agglutinative language which, in the course of many centuries of Semitic influences, became so incrusted with Semiticisms, most of them the result of a very gradual development of the earlier foreign sacred speech of the priests, that it is really not surprising to find the theory that Sumerian was merely a Semitic cryptography set forth and vigorously upheld by so eminent a scholar as Professor Halevy (MSL., pp. VIII, IX). The study of the more ancient Non-Semitic texts, more particularly of the Sumerian unilingual hymns, cannot fail to shed additional light on the nature of this peculiar idiom, besides furnishing a valuable addition to the study of the Babylonian religious system. The texts of the hymns in VoL XV. of the Brit. Mus. Cun. d104s are not always in good condition and present many difficulties, a solution of some of which, it is hoped, has been suggested in this work with at least approximate correctness. Book Sumerian Hymns and Prayers to God Nin Ib From the Temple Library of Nippur Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sumerian Hymns and Prayers to God Nin Ib From the Temple Library of Nippur Classic Reprint written by Hugo Radau and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sumerian Hymns and Prayers to God Nin-Ib From the Temple Library of Nippur It was my original intention to publish in this volume about 28 plates in auto graph. But as will happen occasionally in connection with difficult cuneiform inscriptions, after a detailed examination and analysis, a scholar will change his mind with regard to this or that particular inscription in question. Several of the tablets which first seemed to me to contain N I N - I B texts proved themselves to be N ergal compositions, historical texts, etc., while others remained doubtful as to the god addressed in them. Anxious to offer only indisputable N I N - I B texts, I excluded all inscriptions in which the name of this deity could not be ascertained with absolute certainty. The excavations of Nippur, of course, have yielded a good many more nin-ib texts than here published. But it was the intention of the Editor and the writer to issue at once those texts which had been catalogued and, moreover, were excavated during the earlier expeditions, in order to put before scholars some of the material which furnished the key to the contention of the existence of the now rightly famous Temple Library. The fact, therefore, that only 15 plates of auto graph texts are published in this volume does not by any means indicate that the Temple Library of Nippur is exhausted as regards N IN - IB texts. Variety of texts is what seems to be desired above everything else at present. Shorter volumes following each other in quick succession are demanded. As soon as the variety of the contents of the library has been demonstrated, the Editor and the Publication Committee expect to return to the old method hitherto employed by them.
