Download or read book Sulfur Impacts on Forest Health in West central Alberta written by Douglas G. Maynard and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processing of sour natural gas results in the emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and elemental sulfur (S0). An assessment was carried out in 1991 to compare soil and foliar chemical properties originally measured in 1981 and 1985 in forests near two sour gas processing plants in west-central Alberta. This study was expanded to evaluate forest health and tree growth in relation to sulfur (S) deposition in mature and immature lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm.) and mature trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.). Ten (50 2 m) plots were established in 30 mature lodgepole pine sites, in 6 young lodgepole pine sites, and in 3 trembling aspen-dominated sites. The mature pine sites were classified into 3 deposition classes: high, medium, and low. The distribution of measurable S0 deposition increased from 2 km to 46 km from the S0 load-out areas; however, S0 concentration in the LFH near the gas plants has decreased since 1981. The medium deposition class sites had S concentrations in the LFH and foliage 620% higher than the low deposition class sites. Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations and pH were about 10% less in the medium deposition class sites than in the low deposition class sites. It was, however, not possible to determine a cause and effect relationship between higher S in these sites and lower pH, Ca and Mg. A greater proportion of recently dead trees was found in high deposition class sites, but no difference was seen between the other two deposition classes. There was no increase in insect- and disease-caused damage with increased S deposition in the pine stands. Trembling aspen appeared to be affected by S0 deposition with increased proportions of dead and declining trees and increased incidences of Armillaria root rot and Hypoxylon canker in S0-dusted areas. There were no differences among deposition classes on radial increments at dbh. Annual volume increments were depressed in high S0 deposition sites; however, specific volume increment was depressed in both the medium and high deposition classes indicating a possible physiological impact historically. Elevated S concentrations in the LFH and foliage and a depression in the annual volume increments were the only indicators of S impacts in lodgepole pine forests near the two sour gas processing plants. There was no apparent widespread forest decline outside of areas dusted with S0.

Download or read book Alberta Oil Sands written by Kevin E Percy and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 170 billion barrels, Canada's Oil Sands are the third largest reserves of developable oil in the world. The Oil Sands now produce about 1.6 million barrels per day, with production expected to double by 2025 to about 3.7 million barrels per day. The Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in northeastern Alberta is the largest of the three oil sands deposits. Bitumen in the oil sands is recovered through one of two primary methods - mining and drilling. About 20 per cent of the reserves are close to the surface and can be mined using large shovels and trucks. Of concern are the effects of the industrial development on the environment. Both human-made and natural sources emit oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, trace elements and persistent organic compounds. Of additional concern are ground level ozone and greenhouse gases. Because of the requirement on operators to comply with the air quality regulatory policies, and to address public concerns, the not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA) has since 1997 been closely monitoring air quality in AOSR. In 2008, WBEA assembled a distinguished group of international scientists who have been conducting measurements and practical research on various aspects of air emissions and their potential effects on terrestrial receptors. This book is a synthesis of the concepts and results of those on-going studies. It contains 19 chapters ranging from a global perspective of energy production, measurement methodologies and behavior of various air pollutants during fossil fuel production in a boreal forest ecosystem, towards designing and deploying a multi-disciplinary, proactive, and long-term environmental monitoring system that will also meet regulatory expectations. Covers measurement of emissions from very large industrial sources in a region with huge international media profile Validation of measurement technologies can be applied globally The new approaches to ecological monitoring described can be applied in other forested regions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Quality and Ecological Impacts reviews the characterization of air quality as it pertains to specific emission sources and their environmental effect. Since emissions from multiple sources impact the same location, a multidisciplinary approach is needed to relate atmospheric processes to terrestrial vegetation. As global industrial expansions continue, air quality is no longer governed by isolated point sources (e.g., a single coal-fired power plant), but by source clusters or complexes. To address these issues, atmospheric receptor models have been developed and are continually being improved. The benefits of any air quality control measures based on receptor modeling must be verified by assessing changes or bettering in environmental impacts. Until now, such an approach has not been well integrated and practiced. This book provides the needed concepts and methods in conducting the studies to establish cause-and-effect relationships under ambient conditions, which is valuable to policy makers both in industrialized and developing nations. - Offers approaches for identifying the emissions components from specific air pollution sources - Details methods for using pollutant accumulation in plants for ecological effects assessment - Establishes cause (air quality) and effect (plant responses) relationships under ambient conditions
