This volume, which builds upon and advances the work conducted on the 2015 volume, covers the Su-57 program from conception of the MFI and LFI programs from the early 1980's and 1990's, to flight testing of the T-50 development and pre-series aircraft and initial service deliveries of series aircraft to the Russian Aerospace Forces in December 2020. Book excerpt: Sukhoi Su-27 production began in 1982. The Su-27 project, however, started in 1969, when the United States declared intentions to construct a new fighter, the F-15 Eagle. The Soviet government wasted no time developing a response to counterbalance the latest American aircraft. The project was named the 'Promising Frontline Fighter Project'. Sukhoi was chosen as the project's winner, and the new frontline fighter was named the Su-27.After the Su-27 entered service with the Russian Air Force (VVS), the sky was the limit for Sukhoi and its family of fighters. The company churned out outstanding variants of the Su-27 series. The first variant is the Su-30 two-seat all-weather, air-to-air, and air interdiction missions multirole fighter. The Su-30, which evolved from the Su-27UB two-seat combat trainer, features updated avionics and can conduct ground attack missions. The following aircraft is the two-seat Su-32 fighter bomber. It was designed for round-the-clock, all-weather engagement of ground and surface targets at considerable distances from home bases. It also has precision-guided weapons to attack enemy aircraft in an intense counter-fire and ECM environment. The subsequent aircraft is the Su-33 all-weather carrier-based twin-engine air superiority fighter, designed primarily for use on the Russian 'Admiral Kuznetsov' heavy aviation cruiser. Next is the superb Su-34 multifunctional supersonic fighter bomber which is equipped with the 'Kinzhal' hypersonic missile system. Then comes the granddaddy of the series, the Su-35S 4++ generation multirole super-maneuverable fighter, arguably the most visually striking fighter aircraft on the market today, and is an exceedingly lethal adversary in a combat situation. It possesses extreme super maneuverability and is exceptionally agile and quick. It could also strike targets on the ground. Lastly, there was the Su-37, the most maneuverable variant due to the 'Thrust Vector Control' (TVC) system, which allowed the aircraft to evade a stall scenario during low-speed situations when the control surfaces became ineffective. Using TVC, the aircraft could be controlled in these conditions by relying on engine thrust as opposed to airflow. The Su-37 project was terminated, and only one Su-37 was produced. Nonetheless, the Su-35s today continue to utilize TVC technology.

First flown in May 1962, the Su-15 officially entered service in 1965 and was built in several versions, the late ones having cranked-delta wings and a more capable radar. Being an air defence fighter, the Su-15 frequently had to deal with intruders. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s, the Soviet Union became aware that the U.S. was developing a new generation of jet fighters that had an exceptional range, heavy armor, and great agility in the air. These U.S. aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Hornet, and F/A-18 Hornet dominated U.S. air power for three decades. In the context of the Cold War, the Soviets could not be seen to be lagging behind the Americans. Their response to these new U.S. aircraft was the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker, which was designed as a long-range air superiority aircraft and interceptor. The first of the modified pre-production aircraft appeared in 1981, but it was not until 1984 that significant numbers of the Su-27 started to enter service. Eventually some 680 Su-27 were built for the Soviets, of which 400 remain in service with the Russian Tactical Air Force today. Book excerpt: As early as 1965, when the MiG-25 interceptor was in the midst of its test program, the Mikoyan Design Bureau started work on an even more capable two-seat interceptor meant to provide adequate protection for the huge expanses of Siberia and the Soviet Far East. Though superficially resembling a MiG-25 with tandem cockpits, the aircraft was soon designated the MiG-31. Initially dubbed Super Foxbat in the West but soon renamed Foxhound, the MiG-31 first flew on 16 September 1975 and, after a five-year trials program, achieved initial operational capability in 1980. Full-scale deliveries began in 1982 to units covering the Moscow Air Defense Zone, the Arctic and the Far East. One of the effects was that the SR-71s now stayed away from the Soviet borders. Efforts to improve the Foxhound began right away. In-flight refueling capability was added in 1989 to overcome the problem of inadequate range. Next, the MiG-31B, featuring upgraded avionics and better weapons, entered production in 1990; existing MiG-31s were brought up to the new standard (except for IFR capability) as the MiG-31BS. The radically improved 'Generation 4+' MiG-31M featuring a new WCS and new R-37 ultra-long-range AAMs first flew in 1985 but never entered production because of funding shortages. Today, the MiG-31s remains one of modern Russia's key air defense assets, and new versions keep appearing. The book gives the complete development and service history of this remarkable aircraft and is richly illustrated with color photos and color artwork throughout.

It wasted no time developing a succession of missile-armed, Mach 2 interceptors characterized by delta wings; the single-engined Su-9 entered service in 1960, followed by the up-armed Su-11 in 1964 and the twin-engined Su-15 in 1967. Though built in modest numbers, the three types became an important asset for the Soviet Air Defense Force--particularly the more capable Su-15, which unfortunately became notorious for shooting down two intruding South Korean airliners within five years. The Su-15 outlasted the Soviet Union, the last being retired in 1996. There were also several Sukhoi interceptors that remained in prototype or project form. All known versions are described, as are operational details. The book features many rare and previously unpublished photos.

In the early 1950s the reborn aircraft design bureau headed by Pavel O. Sukhoi started its renewed activities by creating two aircraft sharing the same fuselage design and powerplant – the delta-wing T-3 and the swept-wing S-1. The former became the progenitor of several interceptors, starting with the Su-9; the other aircraft became the Su-7 tactical fighter but soon evolved into the Su-7B fighter-bomber. Known to the West as the Fitter, the Su-7B and its improved Su-7BM and Su-7BKL versions formed the backbone of the Soviet fighter-bomber aviation. They were also exported to many "friendly nations" – first and foremost to some Warsaw Pact member states (Poland and Czechoslovakia), as well as to non-aligned nations like India, Algeria, Egypt, Iraq and others. The Fitter saw action in quite a few wars – the Indo-Pakistani border conflict of 1971, the Arab-Israeli wars. The initial Su-7 Fitter-A was superseded by the Su-17 which differed primarily in having variable-geometry wings. The prototype made its maiden flight in 1966; the production version completely supplanted the original Su-7 in Soviet Air Force service in the 1980s. The "swing-wing" Su-17 proved highly efficient in the Afghan War, earning the affection of the pilots who flew it. Its high combat capabilities were duly recognized abroad; apart from the Warsaw Pact (Poland, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary and Bulgaria), the Su-20 and Su-22 export variants were delivered to Egypt, Iraq, Peru, Yemen, Afghanistan and other nations. Iraq used its Su-22s against Iran in the war of 1980-88, and the ultimate Su-22M4 is still in service with the Polish Air Force – albeit with upgrades to make it compatible with NATO operational standards.
