Book excerpt: Liquidated on political grounds in 1949, Pavel O. Sukhoi's design bureau was reborn in 1953 after Stalin's death. Two lines of aircraft development were established; one was fighter-bombers and attack aircraft, while the other major area of work was interceptors. The first in this line of delta-winged aircraft was the T-3 development aircraft of 1955. After experimenting with different engine options, radars and air intake designs, Sukhoi settled for a single AL-7F engine and a TsD-30 radar in a conical intake centrebody on the T-43 which entered production in 1958 as the Su-9 - the second type to be thus designated. A more refined version with a more powerful Oryol radar emerged in 1959 as the T-47, known as the Su-11. These aircraft were the fastest and highest-flying Soviet interceptors of the 1960s. A new line was started in 1960 with the twinjet T-58 which entered production as the Su-15, again the second twin-engined Sukhoi fighter to have this designation. This aircraft remained a key element of the Soviet Air Defense Force well into the 1980s until replaced by the peerless Su-27. Various versions of the Su-15 are detailed in this book, as are the experimental PT-7/PT-8, T-49 and the unusual two-seat P-1 heavy interceptor with lateral air intakes. The book is richly illustrated with black/white and color photos, including previously unpublished ones, and line drawings.

Book excerpt: In the nervous 1950s, the Soviet Union faced the task of defending its borders against intrusions by Western spyplanes and deterring an attack by Western bomber armadas. The mission was to intercept incoming adversaries at long range, which required plenty of engine power, ample fuel and heavy armament. Several Soviet design bureaus took on this priority task. The first heavy interceptor from the Mikoyan stable was the swept-wing I-3 of 1956 which, though never flown, was the precursor of the cannon-armed I-7U and the missile-armed I-75. These were followed by the delta-winged Ye-150 series of the late 1950s and early 1960s - the single-engined Ye-150 and Ye-152 and the twin-engined Ye-152A. Known to the outside world as the Ye-166, the huge Ye-152M set an impressive speed record of 2,681 km/h on 7th July 1962. These aircraft paved the way for the MiG-25 interceptor. Other contenders included the Sukhoi T-37, terminated by government order before it had a chance to fly. Even the Tupolev OKB, traditionally specializing in heavy bombers and airliners, developed the twin-engined Tu-128 - the world's largest interceptor - which was so huge that it was initially mistaken for a medium bomber.

In the early 1950s the reborn aircraft design bureau headed by Pavel O. Sukhoi started its renewed activities by creating two aircraft sharing the same fuselage design and powerplant – the delta-wing T-3 and the swept-wing S-1. The former became the progenitor of several interceptors, starting with the Su-9; the other aircraft became the Su-7 tactical fighter but soon evolved into the Su-7B fighter-bomber. Known to the West as the Fitter, the Su-7B and its improved Su-7BM and Su-7BKL versions formed the backbone of the Soviet fighter-bomber aviation. They were also exported to many "friendly nations" – first and foremost to some Warsaw Pact member states (Poland and Czechoslovakia), as well as to non-aligned nations like India, Algeria, Egypt, Iraq and others. The Fitter saw action in quite a few wars – the Indo-Pakistani border conflict of 1971, the Arab-Israeli wars. The initial Su-7 Fitter-A was superseded by the Su-17 which differed primarily in having variable-geometry wings. The prototype made its maiden flight in 1966; the production version completely supplanted the original Su-7 in Soviet Air Force service in the 1980s. The "swing-wing" Su-17 proved highly efficient in the Afghan War, earning the affection of the pilots who flew it. Its high combat capabilities were duly recognized abroad; apart from the Warsaw Pact (Poland, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary and Bulgaria), the Su-20 and Su-22 export variants were delivered to Egypt, Iraq, Peru, Yemen, Afghanistan and other nations. Iraq used its Su-22s against Iran in the war of 1980-88, and the ultimate Su-22M4 is still in service with the Polish Air Force – albeit with upgrades to make it compatible with NATO operational standards. One day these projects may well see the light of day, but for now, the author hopes the reader will enjoy his 'dark work'-in time he hopes to do a follow-up. These stories span his entire writing career. Though he prefers poetry as a means of incisive, concentrated power of expression, he loves short stories for their fun; even those that give one a glimpse into the dark side that lurks beneath the surface of life!

By the 1990s this had declined to around 8,000, the reduction largely reflecting the increase in aircraft capability. As well as fighters and bombers, the Soviet inventory included trainers, transports, seaplanes, electronic warfare and ground attack aircraft, as well as an impressive helicopter fleet, notably the Mi-24 ‘Hind’ gunship and the massive Homer transport. The Tu-4 ‘Bull’ was the first Russian nuclear-capable bomber, a copy of the US B-29, which was followed by their range of jet bombers, the Il-28 ‘Beagle’, Tu-16 ‘Badger’ and M-4 ‘Bison’. The prop driven Tu-20 ‘Bear’ and its successors including the Tu-22 ‘Backfire’ and finally the Tu-160 ‘Backfire’, were all formidable. The jet-engined MiG-15 fighter entered service in 1948 and proved itself during the Korean War. The MiG-17, MiG-19 and MiG-21 followed . Ground-attack aircraft included the Su-7 ‘Fitter’ and M-23 ‘Flogger’. The 1970s saw the MiG-25 ‘Foxbat’ interceptor, followed by the MiG-29 ‘Fulcrum’ and Su-27 ‘Flanker’, coming into service. All these aircraft and many more are authoritatively described and vividly illustrated in this comprehensive work.
