Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History A practical teacher cannot avoid developing a certain bias in favour of some ideas and against others, but it has been attempted in this volume to present the case for each school of method with as much fairness as possible. No attempt has been made to produce a stereotyped syllabus or universal code of rules of method, as it is far too early to decide what will be the ultimate product of the very conspicuous reform movement which is at present in course of development among teachers of history. Book Socializing the Child

Download or read book Socializing the Child written by Sarah A. Dynes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socializing the Child: A Guide to the Teaching of History in the Primary Grades A marked characteristic of the new century in all progressive nations is the quickened interest in the child and his education. Owing to this deepened interest in both the nature and the nurture of the child, professional educators are beginning to look more earnestly to history, sociology, psychology, and ethics for guidance and help in their work. This book treats certain aspects of social education in primary grades with the greatest possible simplicity. Especial emphasis is placed upon ways and means of enlarging the child's experience so as to favor the development of the historic sense. The various solutions of the problems of procuring shelter, food, clothing; of hearing burdens, of traveling; of exchanging goods and of celebrating holidays, make an excellent background for later work in history. Because each of the various countries selected by the author for instruction in primary grades solves these problems in its own characteristic way the contrasts arc conspicuous, and serve as a stimulus to both observation and further curiosity concerning human institutions and discoveries. Because each school is a center of community life, each pupil can he trained into responsible membership in that community. He can be saturated with the spirit of service and provided with the instruments of effective self-direction suited to his stage of development. The problems there solved reflect the life of the larger society of which the school is a part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos This book has been written in the interest of better history teaching. It deals in most part with what might be denomi nated everyday classroom problems in the teaching of history in the upper-elementary and high-school grades, both junior and senior. The technic of teaching has received the chief em phasis in the majority of the chapters, and the general psycho logical, pedagogical, and historical phases of the subject, as well as the unsettled problem of what to teach, have been omitted. The idea back of the discussion throughout is that there is'a technic of teaching history in the junior and senior high schools that can be mastered by a teacher and actually applied in directing the daily classroom activities, regardless of the content of the course. Book The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by R. L. Archer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to -be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of his tory from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and for ward into the future with less emotion and more cold blooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. Book Methods of Teaching Biblical History

Download or read book Methods of Teaching Biblical History written by Edward N. Calisch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Teaching Biblical History: Junior Grade The teaching of Bible History to children of tender age is no longer the simple task it was for our fathers. Without knowing anything definitely, or in detail, of the tremendous revolution that has taken place in the intellectual and spiritual worlds during the past generation, the child of today none the less senses the change in the religious atmosphere. There are obstacles of doubt, laxness and parental indifference, with which the teacher of a former generation did not have to contend, but which render far more difficult the work of the teacher of today. In keeping with the general plan of the Correspondence School, this course is designed to aid the teacher to overcome these difficulties, by laying stress upon the primary purpose of Bible History instruction, i. e., the ethical import of the historical narrative. The writer has not undertaken to decide upon the historical accuracy of any of the Biblical narratives. His purpose was to show how to give the pupil a knowledge of the life of the people of Israel during that important formative period of its life, when it progressed from a loosely connected group of tribes to a compact entity, with an aroused sense of national unity and an earnest consciousness of religious purpose, giving the episodes of that progress, but having a spirit of reverence and a constant sense of God's guidance pervade them throughout. The course is not intended as a text book, but as a teacher's guide. The Lesson Material is given as illustration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in General History In teaching history in higher grades, three points must always be in mind: first, to give each student independent work; next, to subject the results of solitary, individual thought to the freest criticism and discussion in the class-room; last of all, the accepted results of the collective labor must be arranged in compact and logical order, and stowed away in memory. By the' solitary study of the individual, the mind gains power and originality; by the free lance in a free field of class-room work, the mind gains courage, sharpness, speed, and generous temper; by the strict, close sifting of study and discussion, it gains concentration, clearness, and breadth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of History, for the Grades The aim of this outline is to present the connected threads and principles which the author has worked out in detailed form for children in A History for Graded and District Schools. The outline is based upon the idea that pupils in history should be led to feel and participate in the life of the people they are studying, - feel the problems of daily living which confronted them and strive to solve them. Like all outlines, it must be filled in with material drawn from books, pictures, maps, stories, poems, and other illustrative material, in order to be made effective. It is simply a skeleton; the teacher and pupil must clothe it with flesh, and breathe into it the pulsating life of history. To aid toward this end, in addition to the history of which this book is an outline, a list of books has been suggested at the close of the outline of work for each grade. In making these lists care has been taken to give teachers such information as will enable them easily to judge something of the nature and fitness of each book for their particular needs. The mere memorizing of dry facts and assertions affords no intel lectual nourishment, while it is almost sure to create a distaste for historical study, and, perhaps, will' even alienate the taste of the scholar forever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The function of both the writer and the teacher of his tory is to explain the meaning of human life as revealed in the records of the past. In the case of both the historian and the teacher much depends upon a nice discrimination in choosing typical facts, for their nature rather than their number Should be the guiding principle. This is especially true in the teaching of history in grammar grades, where the purpose is not so much to acquire a considerable body of knowledge as to develop in the pupil an interest in history and a taste for historical reading. In this book care has been taken not only to select typical events but so to group them that their full value may be appreciated as causes or as results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Teaching History This book was intended to be the first of a series entitled a Pedagogical Library, devoted to methods of teaching, one volume of which was to be occupied with each of the more important branches of instruction in grammar and high schools. The design and plan of the work was not to produce systematic treatises, and still less to develop anything ultimate or absolute in method; but to gather together, in the form most likely to be of direct practical utility to teachers, and especially students and readers of history, generally, the opinions and modes of instruction, actual or ideal, of eminent and representative specialists in each department. The present volume has been an unremunerated work of love on the part of each writer, and the appearance of subsequent volumes in the series is not yet assured. It should be added that the articles arc printed in the order in which they were received by the editor. Teachers in whom a methodic interest has been awakened will find many useful hints in the following books, pamphlets, and articles: - Georg Goufried Gervinus. Gruudzuge der Historik.
