Pursuant to the direction and authority of that resolution, the Committee on Manufactures appointed a subcommittee to conduct the investigations ordered. As chairman of the subcommittee and on its behalf I respectfully invite you to furnish the committee with the names of such persons either connected with or outside of your organization as can best give the committee information touching the causes of the shortage of either sugar or coal. The committee will thank you if you will also place it in possession of any information which may throw light on the question under investigation.
