Book The Root Causes of Sudan s Civil Wars

Download or read book The Root Causes of Sudan s Civil Wars written by Douglas Hamilton Johnson and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudan's post-independence history has been dominated by long, recurring, and bloody civil wars. Most commentators have attributed the country's political and civil strife either to an age-old racial and ethnic divide between Arabs and Africans or to colonially constructed inequalities. In The Root Causes of Sudan's Civil Wars, Douglas H. Johnson examines historical, political, economic, and social factors to come to a more subtle understanding of the trajectory of Sudan's civil wars. Johnson focuses on the essential differences between the modern Sudan's first civil war in the 1960s, the current war, and the minor conflicts generated by and contained within the larger wars. Regional and international factors, such as humanitarian aid, oil revenue, and terrorist organizations, are cited and examined as underlying issues that have exacerbated the violence. Readers will find an immensely readable yet nuanced and well-informed handling of the history and politics of Sudan's civil wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on fieldwork largely collected during the CPA interim period by Sudanese and European researchers, this volume sheds light on the dynamics of change and the relationship between microscale and macroscale processes which took place in Sudan between the 1980s and the independence of South Sudan in 2011. Contributors’ various disciplinary approaches—socio-anthropological, geographical, political, historical, linguistic—focus on the general issue of “access to resources.” The book analyzes major transformations which affected Sudan in the framework of globalization, including land and urban issues; water management; “new” actors and “new conflicts”; and language, identity, and ideology.

Book excerpt: South Sudan became independent in 2011 after decades of rebel wars with the Government of Sudan. Independence prompted discussions about South Sudanese identity and shared history, in which material objects and cultural heritage featured as vitally important resources. However, the long-term effects of colonialism and conflict had largely precluded any concerted attempts to preserve material culture within the country; museums remained in Khartoum, the capital of the formally united Sudan. Furthermore, tens of thousands of objects had been removed from what is now South Sudan during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to museum and private collections around the world.Up to now there have been few attempts to reconnect the history of these South Sudanese museum collections with people in or from South Sudan. Pieces of a Nation is the first extended study of South Sudanese material cultural heritage in museum collections and beyond. The chapters discuss a range of different objects and practices - from museum objects taken from South Sudan in the context of enslavement and colonialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to efforts by South Sudanese to preserve their country's cultural heritage during recent conflicts. With essays by 32 contributors in Europe, South Sudan, Uganda, and Australia, this book delivers a unique range of perspectives on museum objects from South Sudan and on heritage practices in the country and among its diaspora. Written by curators, academics, heritage professionals, and artists in accessible and engaging style, it is intended for scholars, museum professionals, and a wide range of individuals interested in South Sudan, African arts and cultures, the history of museum collecting and colonialism, and/or the role of material heritage in peacebuilding and refugee contexts. At a time of widespread, prominent debates over the provenance of museum collections from Africa and calls for restitution, this book provides an in-depth empirical study of the circumstances and practices that led to South Sudanese objects entering foreign museum collections and the importance of these objects in South Sudan and around the world today.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Sudan

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Sudan written by Robert S. Kramer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of the Sudan was long the largest country in Africa and, according to the general consensus, also one of the least successful in many ways. This was not entirely its fault since it lay along the fault line between Muslim and Christian Africa and between the Nile Valley civilizations and African Sudanic cultures. This partly explains the long and bloody warfare waged by the Southerners to achieve independence, which they did in July 2011. So this hefty book actually covers not one but two states. This fourth edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Sudan does so, first, through a lengthy and detailed chronology tracing its relatively few successes and numerous failures. The introductory essay does an admirable job of putting it all in perspective. But the most informative part is the dictionary, with now over 700 entries for this fourth edition. They deal with important personalities, politics, the economy, society, culture, religion and inevitably the civil war. There are also appendixes and an extensive bibliography.

Book The Sudan

    Book Details:
  • Author : M. W. Daly
  • Publisher : Garnet Education
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book The Sudan written by M. W. Daly and published by Garnet Education. This book was released on 1994 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photographs reproduced in this book mainly cover the years between 1899 and the 1950s, when the Sudan, Africa's largest country, was ruled by a nominal Condominium of Britain and Egypt. They comprise a pictorial record - however impressionistic, subjective, and incomplete - of an era. The authors have selected the 240 photographs in the book from the many thousands held in the Sudan Archive at the University Library, Durham, UK. The selection has been made with an eye to both historical interest and artistic merit. Consequently there is an emphasis on older photographs, many of which are probably unique, and less representation of the later years, for which the photographic record is more extensive. This is not, therefore, a photographic history, but rather a collection of historical photographs. Mainly taken by British officials and tourists, the photographs emphasise British subjects. Although it is important to bear in mind that the British were a tiny minority in the Sudan and that their style of life there was exotic in the extreme, it is nonetheless useful to see in black and white something of the way they lived. The photographs reproduced here record a broad span of human experience and achievement: events of historical or military significance, feats of engineering, and the daily life and recreation of the Sudanese and their temporary rulers.
