Book Microcomputer Applications in the Elementary Classroom

Download or read book Microcomputer Applications in the Elementary Classroom written by George W. Bright and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a serious risk that the extra burden of adding instruction about microcomputers and software to regular elementary school curricula may turn off both teachers and students to the potential that microcomputers have for improving learning. To counter this risk, microcomputers should be integrated into the regular instructional program of elementary schools. This book is primarily intended for elementary school teachers who already have some experience with microcomputers but no expertise is assumed. Following an introduction to education with computers, many applications and issues are discussed, including: (1) programs for drill and practice; (2) tutorials; (3) games; (4) simulations; (5) computer error diagnosis; (6) instructional software evaluation; (7) programming; (8) problem solving; (9) word processing; (10) computer literacy; and (11) administrative uses of microcomputers. This publication contains 109 references. (CW)

Book Evaluating Computer Integration in the Elementary School

Download or read book Evaluating Computer Integration in the Elementary School written by Richard Mowe and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook was written to enable elementary school educators to conduct formative evaluations of their computer integrated instruction (CII) programs in minimum time. CII is defined as the use of computer software, such as word processing, database, and graphics programs, to help students solve problems or work more productively. The first chapter provides an overview of computer education and program evaluation, and the second covers planning for evaluation. The third chapter explains how to collect the data to describe the existing CII program. Interpreting the data and answering evaluation questions are covered in the fourth chapter. Finally, the presentation of the evaluation report is discussed in chapter 5. Appendices include copies of questionnaires for seven facets of the integration program, i.e., planning, program description, goals, staff, plans, activity implementation and goal attainment, and strengths and weaknesses. Also appended are a summary of the research procedures and results upon which this handbook is based. The handbook is intended for use by both experienced and inexperienced evaluators to improve an existing CII program and no formal knowledge of program evaluation is required. (DB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film and radio, television, and computers have each been heralded by reformers as a way to revolutionize classroom instruction by increasing productivity. “The promises implied in these aids caught educators’ attention: individualized instruction, relief from tedium of repetitive activities, and presentation of content beyond what was available to a classroom teacher.” How have teachers responded to the promise of improvement? To answer this question, Larry Cuban has gathered evidence from many diverse sources, constructing a history of technology and education that reveals hidden or ignored patterns in the teacher-machine courtship. He traces cycles of acceptance and denial; the enthusiasm of reformers; the initial optimism of the educational community; the hesitancy, doubts, and frustrations of teachers; and the very slow and limited acceptance of the new technology. He also asks, Why have so few teachers used machines? His answers, drawing from a range of disciplines, will prod readers into viewing the current passion for classroom computers in a different light. This now classic text provides a much-needed perspective on technology in the classroom.

Book Evaluating Technology Integration in the Elementary School

Download or read book Evaluating Technology Integration in the Elementary School written by Richard Mowe and published by International Society for Technology in educ. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book enables educators at the elementary level to conduct formative evaluations of their technology programs in minimum time. Most of the technology is computer related, including word processing, graphics, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, databases, instructional software, programming, and telecommunications. The design of the book is aimed at evaluating the use of technology as it is integrated into other standard curricular areas, such as math or language arts, but the focus is on technology goals rather than curriculum goals. The book is divided into five chapters. The first provides an overview of technology and program evaluation. The second suggests a way to plan for the evaluation. The third explains how to collect the data to describe the existing technology program. The fourth explains how to interpret the data. The final chapter assists in the presentation of the evaluation report. The appendix contains the evaluation questionnaires. (TMK)
