Book Chasing Automation

Download or read book Chasing Automation written by Jerry Prout and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chasing Automation tells the story of how a group of reform-minded politicians during the heyday of America's industrial prowess (1921–1966) sought to plan for the technological future. Beginning with Warren G. Harding and the Conference he convened in 1921, Jerry Prout looks at how the US political system confronted the unemployment caused by automation. Both liberals and conservatives spoke to the crucial role of technology in economic growth and the need to find work for the unemployed, and Prout shows how their disputes turned on the means of achieving these shared goals and the barriers that stood in the way. This political history highlights the trajectories of two premier scientists of the period, Norbert Wiener and Vannevar Bush, who walked very different paths. Wiener began quietly developing his language of cybernetics in the 1920s though its effect would not be realized until the late 1940s. The more pragmatic Bush was tapped by FDR to organize the scientific community and his ultimate success—the Manhattan Project—is emblematic of the technological hubris of the era. Chasing Automation shows that as American industrial productivity dramatically increased, the political system was at the mercy of the steady advance of job replacing technology. It was the sheer unpredictability of technological progress that ultimately posed the most formidable challenge. Reformers did not succeed in creating a federal planning agency, but they did create a enduring safety net of laws that workers continue to benefit from today as we face a new wave of automation and artificial intelligence.

Book excerpt: To the thicket of questions surrounding spirituality, this book brings a clear vision and a thoughtful approach that will help us find our way to the very heart of it. Much is made of spirituality these days-in recovery and in the culture at large-but what, exactly, does spirituality mean? Is it something different to different people? How is it discovered, nurtured, expressed? And, perhaps most important, why does it matter? To the thicket of questions surrounding the subject, this book brings a clear vision and a thoughtful approach that will help us find our way to the very heart of spirituality. Writing simply and directly, Abraham Twerski shows how spirituality-independent of religion-is central to emotional and mental health, and is a key to being truly and profoundly human. Founder and medical director of the Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Abraham J. Twerski is a rabbi, psychiatrist, chemical dependency counselor, and the author of many books, including Addictive Thinking: Understanding Self-Deception.

Book Understanding Israel

Download or read book Understanding Israel written by Joel Peters and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Israel is an unlikely powerhouse in a troubled region. Since 1948, Israel has retained its status as a democratic state without interruption. An investor-friendly environment and skilled workforce have led to a thriving economy, whilst the Israel Defense Forces are one of the most powerful armed forces in the world. Yet Israel is also blighted by a plethora of foreign, domestic and security challenges, some of which threaten the very fabric of the state. The cost of living continues to soar; political corruption appears endemic and the conflict with the Palestinians divides domestic opinion and sours Israeli foreign relations. Thus, contemporary Israel remains perplexing, resisting any straightforward categorizations or generalizations. This book provides a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary analysis of the external and internal threats, opportunities and issues facing contemporary Israel. The book comprises sixteen chapters written by recognized authorities in the field of Israeli Studies. Together, the chapters offer a detailed overview of Israel while separately they provide stand-alone coverage of specific topics under discussion. Part I examines the Israeli Political System, such as the Knesset, political parties and extra-parliamentary politics; Part II addresses issues in Israeli society, including the Israeli economy, the divides between Jews and Arabs, religious and secular Israelis and the struggle for gender equality; and Part III focuses on security, geopolitical and foreign policy challenges, looking at relations between Israel and the Jewish Diaspora, Israeli foreign policy, borders and settlements and regional security threats. By filling an important gap in the study of contemporary Israel, this book is of interest to multiple audiences, most notably students and scholars of Israeli politics, the Middle East and comparative politics.

Book excerpt: John Gerdy offers a critical analysis of how athletic programs can contribute to the mission of a college or university in meaningful ways beyond their roles in providing revenue and entertainment. He explores the history of athletic programs and then offers a philosophical rationale for setting a new standard against which the success of college athletic programs should be measured. Rather than focusing on the level of funds generated, or on the number of championships won, this new standard offers a basis for determining how successful a college athletic program is in helping the institution meet its many challenges and educational goals.

Book Practical Guide to Successful Intellectual Property Valuation and Transactions

Download or read book Practical Guide to Successful Intellectual Property Valuation and Transactions written by Alexander Puutio and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying the optimal price for a transaction involving an intellectual property (IP) asset necessarily involves a thorough, well-reasoned, and well-supported IP valuation analysis. This matchless book draws on decades of experience from the world’s most renowned IP valuation experts, patent office chief economists, finance and accounting professors, and top-tier legal professionals to provide clear guidance and immediately actionable knowledge on how to value IP assets in a multitude of scenarios. The contributors explore all major facets of IP valuation, ranging from the basics of value to technical economic methods in an approachable manner. The book examines the valuation of brands, copyright, trade secrets, patents, and other forms of IP from a multidisciplinary viewpoint with worked examples, draft contract language, case law analysis, and up-to-date theoretical considerations. Issues and topics considered in depth include the following: fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms; determining reasonable royalty rates; standard essential patents; profit apportionment; discount rates; role of the IP asset manager and multi-functional teams; IP management in collaborative research and development; financial methods and economic considerations; and operationalization of IP valuation in practice. The handbook is the result of five years of dedication and hard work by the advisors and a growing network of researchers, supporters, and end-users involved in the Asia-Pacific Research and Training Network on Trade. As IP becomes ever more indispensable in so many activities and industries that cross national borders, the need to overcome the lack of shared understanding of how to approach the valuation of IP becomes more urgent. This book will facilitate consistent approaches to the valuation of IP as an indispensable component of trade, investment, and sustainable economic development. It will provide IP asset managers and transactional attorneys, both seasoned experts and newcomers, with up-to-date methods on how to value IP assets and apply them in practice.
