This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attila Jozsef is internationally acknowledged as an important poet of the first half of the 20th century, and has been widely translated from Hungarian into all major European languages, as well as Russian and Esperanto. No other Hungarian poet could identify with, and take on the cause of the downtrodden and destitute as he did. His depth of feeling and humaneness is nothing less than searing, emphatically crying out for justice and a fairer deal whereby the world can be put to right. "Suburban Night and Other Poems" is a new interpretation by Ivan Kovacs of Jozsef's verse into English. In Kovacs' own words "we need to agree on what is to be considered an ideal or good translation, which surely cannot be anything other than a poem that loses neither the intended meaning nor the emotional impact of the original. Another contributing factor for the successful translation of poetry is, of course, when the translator happens to be a poet in his or her own right. It is with the understanding of these factors that I undertook the translation of poems by Jozsef, and not just because Jozsef's poems are so near to my heart. For me they have such an abundance of "soul" that I could not help but be inspired to try and recreate them in English."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first thing I recognize as the beginning of a poem," writes Richard Pevear, "is a distinct rhythm, not only of stress but of movement. Once I hear it, I can find words for it. But the essential thing, finally, is simultaneity—the completion of a shape, a thought, an emotion, a figure, all at the same time. The Trojan War, the figures of Greek tragedy, certain elements of the Gospels, the stories of Malory, are parts of my personal language." Originally published in 1978. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Dimitrov’s third book, Love and Other Poems, is full of praise for the world we live in. Taking time as an overarching structure—specifically, the twelve months of the year—Dimitrov elevates the everyday, and speaks directly to the reader as if the poem were a phone call or a text message. From the personal to the cosmos, the moon to New York City, the speaker is convinced that love is “our best invention.” Dimitrov doesn’t resist joy, even in despair. These poems are curious about who we are as people and shamelessly interested in hope.

Book Ode to Certain Interstates and Other Poems

Download or read book Ode to Certain Interstates and Other Poems written by Howard W. Robertson and published by Howard W. Robertson. This book was released on 2003 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. "Ode to certain interstates," the thirteen-part poem of this collection, was inspired by the year poet Howard W. Robertson worked as a long-haul truck driver in the American West and British Columbia. In between pauses at truck stops and rest areas, the author meditates on (among other matters) Kant, the Kalapuyans, Basho, and the "best buffet in the West." The eight additional poems in the book, such as "Ode to this small stick" and "The transcendental laughter of Eleanor," use a refined intelligence to probe the daily intersections of the sacred and banal. Howard W. Robertson is a retired research librarian. In 2003, he was awarded the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Prize for Poetry.

Book Night of the Republic

  • Author : Alan Shapiro
  • Publisher : HMH

  • ISBN : 0547607830
  • Pages : 117 pages

Download or read book Night of the Republic written by Alan Shapiro and published by HMH. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry about places—from a supermarket to a strip club to a suburban home—from a poet who “seeks what lies at the deepest level of the human heart” (Chicago Tribune). In Night of the Republic, Alan Shapiro takes us on an unsettling night tour of America’s public places—a gas station restroom, shoe store, convention hall, and race track, among others—and in stark Edward Hopper–like imagery reveals the surreal and dreamlike features of these familiar but empty night spaces. Shapiro finds in them not the expected alienation but rather an odd, companionable solitude rising up from the quiet emptiness. In other poems, Shapiro writes movingly of his 1950s and ’60s childhood in Brookline, Massachusetts, with special focus on the house he grew up in. These meditations, always inflected with Shapiro’s quick wit and humor, lead to recollections of tragic and haunting events such as the Cuban missile crisis and the assassination of JFK. While Night of the Republic is Shapiro’s most ambitious work to date, it is also his most timely and urgent for the acute way it illuminates the mingling of private obsessions with public space. “His poems are both artful and unpretentious.” —Boston Review

Book excerpt: The selected works of one of our finest American poets The thread that dangles us between a dark and a darker dark, Is luminous, sure, but smooth sided. Don’t touch it here, and don’t touch it there. Don’t touch it, in fact, anywhere— Let it dangle and hold us hard, let it flash and swing. —from “Scar Tissue” Over the course of his work—more than twenty books in total—Charles Wright has built “one of the truly distinctive bodies of poetry created in the second half of the twentieth century” (David Young, Contemporary Poets). Oblivion Banjo, a capacious new selection spanning his decades-long career, showcases the central themes of Wright’s poetry: “language, landscape, and the idea of God.” No matter the precise subject of each poem, on display here is a vast and rich interior life, a mind wrestling with the tenuous relationship between the ways we describe the world and its reality. The recipient of almost every honor in poetry—the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Bollingen Prize, to name a few—and a former poet laureate of the United States, Wright is an essential voice in American letters. Oblivion Banjo is the perfect distillation of his inimitable career—for devout fans and newcomers alike.
