Book Imagination in Educational Theory and Practice

Download or read book Imagination in Educational Theory and Practice written by Robert Fitzgerald and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by papers developed for the 6th International Conference on Imagination and Education: Imaginative Practice, Imaginative Inquiry (Canberra, Australia, 2008), this book connects a cross-section of educators, researchers and administrators in a dialogue and exploration of imaginative and creative ways of teaching, learning and conducting educational inquiry. Imagination is a concept that spans traditional disciplinary and professional boundaries. The authors in this book acknowledge diverse theoretical and practical allegiances, but they concur that imagination will play an essential role in the building of new foundations for education in the 21st century. From our conception of human development through our ways of educating teachers to the teaching of mathematics, they argue for the centrality of imagination in the realization of human potential, and for its relevance to the most urgent problems confronting our world. Introduced by a wide-ranging literature review and extensively referenced, this volume makes an important contribution to a rapidly expanding field.

Download or read book Multi digit Addition Subtraction written by Randy Palisoc and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-08-06 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-digit Addition and Subtraction (Unit 2) builds upon Easy Breezy Addition and Subtraction (Unit 1). Multi-digit addition and subtraction are not only essential building blocks for math, but they're also essential for everyday life as well. Two examples of this include working with both time and money. This is why this book incorporates sections focusing on time and money to help students understand and master multi-digit addition and subtraction. Additionally, this unit takes a multi-faceted approach to building fluency and understanding. Students will learn to both: 1. make sense of the tried and true standard algorithm as well as 2. learn the more visual approach of using Stepping Stones (introduced in Unit 1, Easy Breezy Addition and Subtraction) to find the difference. This way, students will be able to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction problems both in writing and in their heads, building the confidence and skills they need to continue succeeding in math.

Book Badiou and the Political Condition

They intervene critically and evaluate the present state of Badiou's work, while also breaking new ground and creating new thresholds of political thought. It includes a range of established scholars and rising theorists of the Badiou-effect, each engaging with the critical question of 'how to transmit the exception' politically, at the intersection of contemporary anti-imperial polemics and debates that strike at the heart of the post-modern condition (Lyotard), deconstruction (Derrida), psychoanalysis (Lacan-Zizek), biopolitics (Hardt and Negri) and pedagogy (Ranciere).

Book excerpt: This stress-free layperson's introduction to the intriguing world of numbers is designed to acquaint the general reader with the elegance and wonder of mathematics. Unlike the typical boot-camp experience of a high school or college calculus course, Jefferson Hane Weaver's approach is more like a relaxing and educational walking tour. Along the way, tour-guide Weaver points out, explains, and invites readers to sample some of the most interesting topics. Even the most math-phobic among us will be lulled into appreciation by Weaver's creative and disarming discussions of this supposedly formidable intellectual discipline. He covers all the basics: irrational and imaginary numbers, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, differential and integral calculus, the concepts of zero and infinity, vectors, set theory, chance and probability, and much more. In conclusion, he provides five fascinating historical profiles, reviewing the life and work of Copernicus, Descartes, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton. More than anyone else, these five geniuses were responsible for creating the mathematical foundations of the physical sciences, which continue to make possible extraordinary discoveries and technological achievements. This enjoyable volume gives readers a working knowledge of math's most important concepts, an appreciation of its elegant logical structure, and an understanding of its historical significance in creating our contemporary world.

Book In Defense of Lost Causes

Download or read book In Defense of Lost Causes written by Slavoj Zizek and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2009-10-19 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned philosophical sharpshooter looks for the kernel of truth in the fascist politics of the past—offering an adrenaline-fueled manifesto for universal values. Is global emancipation a lost cause? Are universal values outdated relics of an earlier age? In fear of the horrors of totalitarianism, should we submit ourselves to a miserable third way of economic liberalism and government-as-administration? In this combative major work, philosophical sharpshooter Slavoj Žižek takes on the reigning ideology with a plea that we should re-appropriate several “lost causes”—and look for the kernel of truth in the “totalitarian” politics of the past. Examining Heidegger’s seduction by fascism and Foucault’s flirtation with the Iranian Revolution, he suggests that these were the “right steps in the wrong direction.” He argues that while the revolutionary terror of Robespierre, Mao, and the Bolsheviks ended in historic failure and monstrosity, this is not the whole story. There is, in fact, a redemptive moment that gets lost in the outright liberal-democratic rejection of revolutionary authoritarianism and the valorization of soft, consensual, decentralized politics. Žižek claims that, particularly in light of the forthcoming ecological crisis, we should reinvent revolutionary terror and the dictatorship of the proletariat in the struggle for universal emancipation. We need to courageously accept the return to this Cause—even if we court the risk of a catastrophic disaster. In the words of Samuel Beckett: “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
