Book Design Guidelines for Subsurface Roadway Drainage Systems

Download or read book Design Guidelines for Subsurface Roadway Drainage Systems written by Zahran El-Said Mamdouh Mahmoud and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor drainage of asphalt pavements causes the pavement to undergo several types of distress, such as stripping, potholes, and others. The aim of this book is the development of guidelines to select proper design parameters of subsurface roadway drainage systems. This comprised the investigation of a variety of roadway cross-section configurations using computer modelling. The investigation started with evaluating the hydraulic situation under a selected roadway with many cross-section configurations in a water-logged area, in both cases of the presence and absence of many design alternatives of a subsurface drainage system. Then, the optimum parameters of each design alternative of the drainage system were determined to lower the groundwater table to a safe level under each configuration of the roadway cross-section. A microscopic groundwater flow model was created in Processing Modflow to simulate the hydraulic situation under the roadway cross-section in both cases of the drainage conditions. A cost analysis was performed in both cases of un-drained and drained roadway cross-sections including all configurations of the roadway cross-section and the roadway drainage system.

Book Recharge of Phreatic Aquifers in Semi Arid Areas

Download or read book Recharge of Phreatic Aquifers in Semi Arid Areas written by Ian Simmers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater use is of fundamental importance to meet the rapidly expanding urban, industrial and agricultural water requirements in (semi) arid areas. Quantifying the current rate of groundwater recharge and define its variability in space and time are thus prerequesites for efficient groundwater resource managment in these regions, where such resources are often the key to economic development. Attention focuses on recharge of phreatic aquifers, often the most readily-available and affordable source of water in (semi) arid regions. These aquifers are also the most susceptible to contamination, with the recharge rate determining their level of vulnerability. (Semi) arid zone recharge can be highly variable, the greater the aridity, the smaller and potentially more variable the natural flux. Its determination is an iterative process, involving progressive data collection and resource evaluation; there is also a need to use more than one technique to verify results. Direct, localised and indirect recharge mechanisms from a spectrum of known sources are addressed in the framework of recharge from precipitation, intermittant flow and permanent water bodies. The approach taken for each of these reflects the nature and current understanding of the processes involved. The volume also reviews current recharge estimation challenges, outlines recent developments and offers guidance for potential solutions.

Download or read book Drainage Design written by P. Smart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of the principles and methods of drainage with an emphasis on design. The whole field of drainage is covered, and although the book concentrates mainly on the practice in North America, Europe and Britain, the practice in developing countries is also included. The book is directed primarily at the graduate engineer entering professional practice, but will also provide a useful reference for more senior engineers and for those in adjunct professions. Chapter 1 outlines the necessity for drainage on a large or small scale, for rural and urban areas. As the drainage engineer must decide how much unwanted water there will be and when it will occur, the chapter discusses climatic types, prediction of rainfall, evapotranspiration effects, return periods (of design storms and runoff events), river flow and flood prediction, and various sensing systems for providing short term predictions of rainfall, runoff, streamflow and flood warning. Chapter 2 gives a thorough review of the properties of soil in the context of drainage design. The extensive mathematical theories which relate to the crucial area of soil water movement are outlined and due attention is paid to the growing importance of predicting soil water movement in partially saturated soils.
