Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the uninitiated, the science or art of Astrology appears complicated and its study too intricate to be followed or understood easily; this notion, however, is erroneous and is mainly caused by confusion of thought and the misconceptions which bias or prejudice has introduced into the subject.-from "Chapter 1: The Simplicity of Astrology"Some consider him the father of modern astrology, for in the early 20th century, prominent British astrology Alan Leo opened up the secrets of divination by the stars to the general public with his line of "Modern Astrology" manuals, a popular series of books that set off a craze for horoscopes that continues to this day. In this 1914 guide, Leo explains, in easy-to-understand language, the basic symbology that underlies the reading of the zodiac: the many aspects of the circle that can represent the solar system, the sun, and the moon; the cross, expressing the creative power of life and the physical body; the basic signs that signify each of the houses of the zodiac and each of the planets and what they metaphorically denote, and more. This is an invaluable resource for modern astrology buffs and those interested in the history of the paranormal.British astrologer WILLIAM FREDERICK ALLAN (1860-1917), a.k.a. Alan Leo, published Astrologer's Magazine as well as a line of astrological materials; he founded the Astrological Lodge of the Theosophical Society in 1915.

Book excerpt: "The main thrust of this book is to deliver a major critique of materialist and rationalist explanations of social and cultural forms, but the in the process Sahlins has given us a much stronger statement of the centrality of symbols in human affairs than have many of our 'practicing' symbolic anthropologists. He demonstrates that symbols enter all phases of social life: those which we tend to regard as strictly pragmatic, or based on concerns with material need or advantage, as well as those which we tend to view as purely symbolic, such as ideology, ritual, myth, moral codes, and the like. . . ."—Robert McKinley, Reviews in Anthropology

This book was released on 2023-05-27 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There is no end to the writing of books,” we are told. Certainly it seems to be the fact that one book leads to another, and the many demands made upon me for explanations of points, problems and paradoxes, contained in some of my recent works, have induced me to a comprehensive effort in the present volume. Whether I shall have succeeded in throwing more light upon the dark problems of Occultism, or only in making confusion worse confounded, it is for the reader to judge. “All truth is paradoxical,” says Laotze, the great philosopher of Quietism. In such case it were hard indeed to offer any argument which may be regarded as final and conclusive, and especially is this the case in reference to the debatable ground of Occultism. Yet a very wise writer has said that nothing can be accepted as true which does not submit to a mathematical statement. This is a tacit confession of faith in the law of numerical ratios, the geometry of the universe which underlies all revelation. We cannot truly be said to know a thing until we have reduced it to a mathematical concept. We may conveniently regard life as manifesting 2in three stages or degrees, namely, Principles, Causes and Effects. Our conscious relation to these three stages of life gives rise to Ethic, Philosophy and Science. Science is what we know of the universe; philosophy what we think of it; ethic, how that thought affects our conduct. Thus the final appeal is to utility. The virtue of everything is in its use. Science, philosophy and ethic must eventually submit to the test of utility. It is not for the sake of the mathematical statement, nor yet for the pleasure of abstract argument, but chiefly for the sake of utility that I have attempted this popular exposition of Occultism, for I think it deserves more attention than has hitherto been given to it. The idea that Occultism serves any useful end in life may not at once appeal to the casual reader. The deeper thinker will, however, discern in any coherent system of thought, in any orderly statement of fact, a possible means of self-adjustment to the problems of life, howsoever dimly apprehended. To the categorical imperative of Kant—I must because I ought, but why ought I?—Occultism offers a very definite answer. It gives a cogent reason for all action, and may indeed be finally judged on its ethical value. It will not be found inadequate. Purposive action has no value without free will in man. That “free will in man is necessity in play” is true only of those who are not divine conspirators. We are fated to the extent that we are ignorant of 3the cosmical and spiritual laws—the one order is a reflex of the other—by which the universe is upheld. We are culpable to the extent that we neglect those laws we know. Science has succeeded in harnessing many of the forces of Nature to the service of mankind. Philosophy will bring man into conscious relations with the laws governing his existence, and ethic will instruct him concerning their employment for the good of the race. To the extent that we understand the laws of our being and use them for our personal benefit, and through ourselves for the good of all mankind, we become conspirators with the Divine Will, conscious co-operators towards “that one divine far-off event to which the whole creation moves,” an apotheosis warranted by the trend of the physical and spiritual evolution of humanity, and prophetically indicated by the words: “Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, to crown him with glory and worship.” As fragments in the fabric of a spiritual upbuilding, as detached observations of the law of universal harmony, as things of isolated interest, all conspiring to the founding of a single idea, these curiosities of Occultism are offered to those who are able to appreciate them...FROM THE BOOKS.

Book The Symbolic Life

Download or read book The Symbolic Life written by C.G. Jung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally planned as a brief final volume in the Collected Works, The Symbolic Life has become the most ample volume in the edition, and one of unusual interest. It contains some 160 items spanning sixty years; they include forewords, replies to questionnaires, encyclopedia articles, occasional addresses, and letters on technical subjects. Collection of this material relied on three chief circumstances. After Jung returned from active medical practice, he gave more of his time to writing, and some sixty papers as well as books were written after 1950. Second, recent research has brought to light a number of reviews, reports and articles from the early years of Jung's career. Finally, Jung's files yielded several finished or virtually finished papers that survived in manuscript. Volume 18 includes three longer works: 'The Tavistock Lectures' (1936); 'Symbols and the Interpretation of Dreams' (1961); and 'The Symbolic Life', the transcript of a seminar given in London in 1939.

Book The Origins of the Philosophy of Symbolic Forms

Download or read book The Origins of the Philosophy of Symbolic Forms written by Donald Phillip Verene and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins of the Philosophy of Symbolic Forms marks the culmination of Donald Phillip Verene’s work on Ernst Cassirer and heralds a major step forward in the critical work on the twentieth-century philosopher. Verene argues that Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms cannot be understood apart from a dialectic between the Kantian and Hegelian philosophy that lies within it. Verene takes as his departure point that Cassirer never wishes to argue Kant over Hegel. Instead he takes from each what he needs, realizing that philosophical idealism itself did not stop with Kant but developed to Hegel, and that much of what remains problematic in Kantian philosophy finds particular solutions in Hegel’s philosophy. Cassirer never replaces transcendental reflection with dialectical speculation, but he does transfer dialectic from a logic of illusion, that is, the form of thinking beyond experience as Kant conceives it in the Critique of Pure Reason, to a logic of consciousness as Hegel employs it in the Phenomenology of Spirit. Cassirer rejects Kant’s thing-in-itself but he also rejects Hegel’s Absolute as well as Hegel’s conception of Aufhebung. Kant and Hegel remain the two main characters on his stage, but they are accompanied by a large secondary cast, with Goethe in the foreground. Cassirer not only contributes to Goethe scholarship, but in Goethe he finds crucial language to communicate his assertions. Verene introduces us to the originality of Cassirer’s philosophy so that we may find access to the riches it contains.

Book Race and the Obama Administration

Download or read book Race and the Obama Administration written by Andra Gillespie and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The election of Barack Obama marked a critical point in American political and social history. Did the historic election of a black president actually change the status of blacks in the United States? Did these changes (or lack thereof) inform blacks' perceptions of the President? This book explores these questions by comparing Obama's promotion of substantive and symbolic initiatives for blacks to efforts by the two previous presidential administrations. By employing a comparative analysis, the reader can judge whether Obama did more or less to promote black interests than his predecessors. Taking a more empirical approach to judging Barack Obama, this book hopes to contribute to current debates about the significance of the first African American presidency. It takes care to make distinctions between Obama's substantive and symbolic accomplishments and to explore the significance of both.

Book Be in Charge It s Free of Charge

Download or read book Be in Charge It s Free of Charge written by Dino Georgalas and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis According to Yogi Berra "You can sometimes see a lot just by looking". Even a casual observation of everyday life and current events may well reveal that the state of our nation and indeed the world is increasingly fraught with stress, rapidly deteriorating and costly health, angst, agony and even depression. "Be In Charge (of Yourself and Your Health), It's Free of Charge" addresses with the utmost if not unprecedented simplicity what concerns and alarms most everybody on the planet ( maybe even more so in the US, Canada and the EU.) which is Human Health & Stress. It provides universal appeal, accessibility, and self empowerment for the general reader while also uniquely providing total independence of all external and/or intangible references and/or directives. Health and stress are practically everybody's prime and urgent concern. This is probably an understated understatement Martial the first century AD Roman poet was right on when he quite unequivocally stated "Life Is Not Living, But Living In Health" (non est vivere sed vaslere vita est). Myriad published recommendations to combat ill health and stress, fall mainly in the following categories: Medical Scientific Religious Abstract Esoteric Spiritual Fads (diets, fitness, meditation etc.) Some recommendations may be dogmatic and/or intimidating, but all operate under the illusion of one size fits all, or as culturally and commonly expressed "Everybody does it" or "It happens to everybody" This illusion is also hammered in holistically by relentless advertising. Most existing HEALTH and STRESS related PUBLICATIONS are BASED ON DOGMA and/or intimidation "pushed" strictly by AUTHOR CREDENTIALS, and/or FAME and NOTORIETY. They also embrace the one size fits all myth or rather oxymoron and promote fads often contradictory. As anyone may observe the state of our physical and mental health leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least, in spite of occasional short term and at times Pyrrhic victories. "Be In Charge (of Yourself and Your Health), It's Free of Charge" offers a uniquely different and tangible paradigm. It contains no dogma be it religious, ideological, spiritual or other. Nor is it abstract, moralising or judgmental. It merely reminds readers of their uniqueness, their inherent and self evident free will/power of choice, which combined with their innate common sense can uniquely deal with their health and stress concerns. This reminder is tangible, self evident, accessible by most all, and anybody can identify with it individually. The reader is in the driver's seat, not some guru with myriad lists of to do's, none of which is individualised. The reader alone gets to choose. Simply put, you do not have to do anything, only what you choose to, since choice has always been yours, is always yours, will always be yours, and never, never anybody else's. Furthermore it does not prescribe/dictate, recommend or promote products, diets exercises, systems, procedures, and treatments, nor any literature dealing in "what to do, when and how". It establishes with Aristotelian sequential logic and common sense that by Being In Charge Of One's Self, stress and the resulting self contradictions and internal conflicts may be neutralised. Once In Charge Of One's Self, the next logical step is the option to take Charge Of One's Health and validate the ancient Greek principle of "Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body". This ancient principle is being constantly reconfirmed by medical science. . "Be In Charge (of Yourself and Your Health), It's Free of Charge", first establishes tangibly the absolute uniqueness of each human being while debunking the one size fits all myth. It next reminds all of the self evident, that all the "children" of the Big Bang, A.K.A. human beings, are inherently equipped with the gift of discrimination, and the absolute power of choice/free will. Once individual uniqueness and the absolute power of choice and its natural consequences are acknowledged a
