Book excerpt: Excerpt from Substance and Function, and Einstein's Theory of Relativity The investigations contained in this volume were first prompted by studies in the philosophy oi_ mathematics. In the course of an attempt to comprehend the fundamental conceptions of mathematics from the point of view of logic, it became necessary to analyse more closely the function of the concept itself and to trace it back to its presuppositions. Here, however, a peculiar difficulty arose: the traditional logic of the concept, in its well-known features, proved inadequate even to characterize the problems to which the theory of the principles of mathematics led. It became increasingly evident that exact science had here reached questions for which there existed no precise correlate in the traditional language of formal logic. The content of mathematical knowledge pointed back to a fundamental form of the concept not clearly defined and recognized within logic itself. In particular, investigations concerning the concepts of the series and of the limit, the special results of which, however, could not be included in the general exposition of this book, con firmed this view and led to a renewed analysis of the principles of the construction of concepts in general. For all the descriptive and predictive power that the complexity sciences offer (the ability to compute feedback systems, recursive networks, emergent dynamics, etc.), they also presume that the living world in all of its modalities (biological, semiotic, economic, affective, social) can be reduced to finite schema of description that delimits in advance all possible outcomes. What is proposed in this volume are conceptual architectures for the living that are not only irreducible to physico-mathematical frames of reference, but that are also as vital as the phenomena they wish to express. In short: life is more complex than complexity. What emerges from this engagement is not the ascendance of a new transcendental principle (or, what amounts to the same thing, a foundational bedrock) derived from the physico-mathematical sciences, but just the opposite: a domain in which the ontological and the epistemological domains enter a zone of strange (and unavoidable) entanglement. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Angelaki.

Heinrich Hertz, as the con summate experimentalist of 19th century technique and as brilliant clarifying critic of physical theory of his time, achieved one of the fulfilments but at the same time opened one of the transition points of classical physics. Thus, in his 'popular' lecture 'On the Relations Between Light and Electricity' at Heidelberg in the Fall of 1889, Hertz identified the ether as henceforth the most fundamental problem of physics, as the conceptual mystery but also the key to understanding mass, electric ity, and gravity. Of Hertz's demonstration of electric waves, Helmholtz told the Physical Society of Berlin: "Gentlemen! I have to communicate to you today the most important physical discovery of the century. " Hertz, philosophizing in his direct, lucid, pithy style, once wrote "We have to imagine". Perhaps this is metaphysics on the horizon? In the early pages of his Principles of Mechanics, we read A doubt which makes an impression on our mind cannot be removed by calling it metaphysical: every thoughtful mind as such has needs which scientific men are accustomed to denote as metaphysical. (PM23) And at another place, concerning the terms 'force' and 'electricity' and the alleged mystery of their natures, Hertz wrote: We have an obscure feeling of this and want to have things cleared up.

Igor Mazylo continues to study the history of railway transport. The researcher emphasizes that railway transport during the Soviet-German war played an exclusive role in transporting the needs of the front and the reconstruction process in the economy. The section prepared by Tatiana Pikovskaya is devoted to the solution of the national question in the programs of political parties of national minorities. The history of the First Czechoslovak Republic is part of the political history of Ukraine, because as a result of international treaties concluded after the First World War, Transcarpathian Russia became part of Czechoslovakia under the name "Subcarpathian Russ". This was the impetus for the formation of a democratic multiparty system in the region. The section highlights the peculiarities of Transcarpathian political parties of this period. Among them are multipartyism, the presence of a large number of Hungarian, German, and Jewish parties in addition to the Ukrainian one. In his section, Zorislav Makarov studies the historical-philosophical and methodological preconditions of the current sociological, post-positivist and postmodern critique of scientific rationality and deterministic ideas at the heart of its ontology. The author clarifies the reasons and prospects of significant philosophical and methodological reflection of communicative aspects of scientific rationality on the material of advanced science development of quantum and "nonlinear" samples of ontology and the corresponding improvement of scientific description. In the study of Igor Bielkin research reveals the methodological principles of effective use of the business game algorithm as a leading method of active training of future specialists in the field of management and business in modern institutions of higher education. Emphasis is placed on the modernization of the content of the educational process taking into account the current needs of professional training of modern managers using gaming technologies. Attention is paid to the implementation of communication comfort of students in vocational training in higher education institutions in the game environment, as well as the use of business games as a method of interactive learning of students in the real production process. Volodymir Mangora researches the peculiarities of information and legal support of legal education in modern Ukraine. The analysis of the current legislation regulating information and legal support of legal education is carried out. The main problems of information and legal support of legal education in terms of distance learning are identified. Proposals have been developed to improve the training of future lawyers. Tamila Mangora on the basis of studying the life of A. Yakovliv considered his formation as a lawyer and historian of law, analyzed the process of transformation of his political and legal views. As a result of studying the works of A. Yakovliv, his views on the sources of Ukrainian law, Ukrainian-Moscow treaties, ideas about the formation of the Ukrainian nation and the formation of the state are highlighted. The content of the collective monograph corresponds to the direction of research work of the Department of History of Ukraine and Philosophy of Vinnytsia National Agrarian University "Study of trends in socio-economic development and 5 consolidation of Ukrainian society in modern history of Ukraine." In writing the monograph were used: historical and genetic method, statistical analysis, sociological and pedagogical research.
